Dubstep Control (Post Rotation)

Standard Control W/U/B (Esper)

He_Who_Seizes_Thoughtseize Score: 74

I'mtrying to plan ahead for when rotation hits, and one of the decks that looks like it could be strong with what we have right now is Esper Control (I call it Dubstep because Esper is WUB). This is my first time playing control, so I'm not 100% sure what I'm doing, just wanted to test the waters in something new for Return to Ravnica - Theros. This deck isn't going to be built right away, I just want to get the framework for the deck started before rotation hits and prices change. As always, all comments and suggestions are very much appreciated and welcome.

FNM #1 - 8/16/13 — Aug. 17, 2013

FNM #1 with the deck:

Record: 2-0-1

Rank: 2nd Place

-Match 1: ??? (Win)

-Match 2: Rakdos Aggro (2-0 Win)

-Match 3: Azorius Control (1-1 Draw)

This deck went to it's first FNM, and it did surprisingly well! I ended up letting a friend pilot it while I played Naya Midrange, so I don't know all of the match-up play-by-plays. Next FNM though, I shall be piloting it (hopefully) and I will give more details.

Added a maybeboard to list the cards I'm considering and also cards in the suggestions that I'm considering, but either on the fence with or don't know what to replace with. Also, changed the sideboard slightly.

Updated the deck from the previous set of comments. I also cleared out the past 30 comments so it isn't as cluttered. Still looking for all advice from everyone about the deck. Thanks! :D

Merciless Eviction really isn't necessary when, unlike Terminus , it can't be miracled for cheap. It's better off just being another Supreme Verdict.

It is when it costs 2 more than something that gets rid of the thing control actually wants to get rid of.

So? Post board wipe it's a 1/1 and can be dealt with incredibly easily because you're control.

Please don't tell me we're encouraging the actually good Esper deck to run Downsize and AEtherize. They may be great in limited, but I guarantee their usefulness does not transfer over to Standard.

Are you putting Thoughtseize in, Fallen_Angel_of_Music?

I'd reset the comments if I were you at this point, Fallen_Angel_of_Music.

OnyxMyr: I more than likely will if I can pick any up, haha.

And I shall be clearing a few comments above this one.

Thoughtseize would be a better addition than Duress and even Sin Collector .

By the way, because this deck sucks against Burning Earth , you need four Tear S/B.

I don't think one card really dictates that you need FOUR of something in the sideboard, especially since Burning Earth decks will be less popular once the buddylands rotate. Tear might still be a good option because of the number of enchantments Theros will have, but running 4 in the sideboard when there are other ways to get rid of Burning Earth seems a little much and will restrict how well the deck will be able to sideboard against other more common decks.

Yes. But, Burning Earth is your biggest weekness and used by multiple decks.

D-Sphere Burning Earth : done.

Theros is in like 2 or 3 weeks. I am sure there will be plenty great enchantment removal that comes along with it.

I would swap Renounce the Guilds with Glare of Heresy. Not only does it take out Detention Sphere in mirror matches but it ruins "Mr Counter-Control" himself Voice of Resurgence .

Curse of the Swine also deserves a spot.

I think you can go to 25 lands, but you should definitely added some of the scry lands

Maybe some Glaring Spotlight in the side board
