Drink to your death

Modern Combo Lifegain Mono-White

Land (1)

Semi-casual modern deck I put together when I saw the spoiler for Chalice of Life  Flip. Chalice of Death  Flip and Voltaic Key together can make an opponent lose 10 life in a single turn. With Unwinding Clock on the battlefield you can make them lose another 10 during their upkeep, so basically they're dead before they can even do anything. The rest of the deck is made up of lifegain cards and cards that are synergistic with lifegain, such as Serra Ascendant, which serves as an alt-win condition if I don't draw a Chalice of Life  Flip. Also Sun Droplet plus Ajani's Pridemate is another nice little combo because it pretty much guarantees that Ajani's Pridemate is gonna be getting bigger every turn.

UPDATE: Replaced Leonin Abunas with Wall of Reverence , swapped out 2 Sun Droplet for 2 Path to Exile.

UPDATE 2: Replaced Wall of Reverence with Rhox Faithmender .

It playtests very well. The only suggestions I may make is to consider Pristine Talisman . But I understand that it may be hard to make room for that artifact. +1 from me.

keshav says... #3

Thanks masalo and dcarpntr!

dcarpntr: I considered adding Pristine Talisman , but given the mana curve, I don't really need the extra mana production, and Chalice of Life  Flip  Flip already taps to gain one life so it serves the same function. Thanks for your suggestion though.

Definitely you need to run Kabira Crossroads . I love Modern :)

January 18, 2012 5:09 p.m.

keshav says... #5

The additional lifegain would be helpful, but I'm worried Kabira Crossroads will slow the deck down. I'll run some playtests and see. Thanks for the suggestion.

January 18, 2012 6 p.m.

vishnarg says... #6

I have played with Kabira Crossroads for a while and unless you need another land right now to play something to win the game it has no effect at all. You can play it once you have an opening in the curve.

vishnarg says... #7

Also, I would drop Sun Titan , it's too much mana, perhaps card:Ajani's Pridemate would be better, or just Path to Exile for a little removal?

January 18, 2012 9:41 p.m.

keshav says... #8

Given the number of artifacts, if I put in removal I may go for DispatchMTG Card: Dispatch over Path to ExileMTG Card: Path to Exile. And you have a point about Sun TitanMTG Card: Sun Titan, but right now it's the main alt-win condition in case the lifegain doesn't pan out. Although I might just have to put in Ajani's PridemateMTG Card: Ajani's Pridemate given how awesome it is with Sun DropletMTG Card: Sun Droplet. Thanks for your suggestions!

January 20, 2012 6:39 p.m.

vishnarg says... #9

Yes, definitely DispatchMTG Card: Dispatch over Path. No problem! :)

January 20, 2012 8:17 p.m.

dcarpntr says... #10

Something else you could run in place of Ajani's PridemateMTG Card: Ajani's Pridemate could be a couple of Ajani GoldmaneMTG Card: Ajani Goldmane. His lifegain ability and avatar would work great with your deck theme. And I agree with the previous statement about definitely making room for one or two Kabira CrossroadsMTG Card: Kabira Crossroads.

January 20, 2012 10:51 p.m.

keshav says... #11

Ok guys, I made a major update to the deck. Thanks a lot for your suggestions, it seems to run even better in playtest now. I took almost all the suggestions, except I ended up putting Oblivion RingMTG Card: Oblivion Ring in instead of DispatchMTG Card: Dispatch because I wasn't getting metalcraft that often and I wanted to be able to deal with noncreature permanent threats as well. Let me know what you think!

Chalice of White That was may adaption of a chalice deck. I however, took the standard root when making it. Given that, it's a little different than yours, but you still might be able to get some ideas for yours. The alt win-con is in damage so I added the I can use him to get it back, as well as my Porcelain LegionnaireMTG Card: Porcelain Legionnaire, Mimic VatMTG Card: Mimic Vat, Ratchet BombMTG Card: Ratchet Bomb (for token decks), and Oblivion RingMTG Card: Oblivion Ring (if they get out something I can't blow up). 4 Day of JudgmentMTG Card: Day of Judgments, 2 Gideon JuraMTG Card: Gideon Juras, and 3 Oblivion RingMTG Card: Oblivion Rings for board control. Timely ReinforcementsMTG Card: Timely Reinforcements for chump blockers and a quick life gain if played after allowing them to hit me for 1 point of damage. The instants are all life gain. The Norn's AnnexMTG Card: Norn's Annex are nice against agro as well.

id put Suture PriestMTG Card: Suture Priest over Soul WardenMTG Card: Soul Warden for the slight aggro counter

February 16, 2012 8:08 p.m.

keshav says... #16

I'll side it in for dealing with aggro, but in general it would slow down the deck to replace 4 1-drops with 4 2-drops. Also makes for less life gain. Thanks for your suggestion.

STG says... #17

Nice deck! And yes, I had a look at yours by your request on my deck, haha.

A playset of Rest for the WearyMTG Card: Rest for the Weary may be risky, as it could be a dead draw at times. I would suggest dropping to 2 or 3.

Survival CacheMTG Card: Survival Cache may or may not be right for you, but its a good card - 3 mana to gain 4 life and draw 2. Draw power is something you lack in the deck, so it might be a neat investment.

+1 from me though. :)

February 18, 2012 2:18 a.m.

keshav says... #18

Thanks for the suggestions and the +1. I like Rest for the WearyMTG Card: Rest for the Weary as a four-of because of the likelihood that it will be in my opening hand. The goal of this deck is pretty much to get to 30 life as quickly as possible, since that is what both the win-cons rely on. And if I draw more later on, it won't really be a dead drop, because I will probably have mana to spare by then and an extra 4 life won't hurt. But I see your point about the lack of draw power. I'll think about it.

Remember, once it's flipped you can make a copy of it with say.. oh Sculpting SteelMTG Card: Sculpting Steel or Phyrexian MetamorphMTG Card: Phyrexian Metamorph

huginnson says... #24

Have you considered including the infinite life gain combo with Leonin Relic-WarderMTG Card: Leonin Relic-Warder, Phyrexian MetamorphMTG Card: Phyrexian Metamorph and Soul WardenMTG Card: Soul Warden, or Felidar SovereignMTG Card: Felidar Sovereign?

March 1, 2012 5:54 p.m.

keshav says... #25

I'm aware of that combo, but that's not really what the deck is about. I wanted to build this deck around and synergy with it, and I think the Relic-Warder combo would take away from it. Thanks for your suggestion though.

March 1, 2012 7:13 p.m.

Kozlak says... #26

Awesome deck man. I've never even thought of something like this. It would be much more competitive in type two, only because modern has access to some nasty decks.

March 2, 2012 12:10 a.m.

keshav says... #27

Thanks for looking dude. It probably would be, but it's pretty much for casual play and small local tournaments, so I'm not super worried about the competitiveness.

I had an older deck like this (minus , of course). I used CongregateMTG Card: Congregate, Sunspring ExpeditionMTG Card: Sunspring Expedition, Trigon of MendingMTG Card: Trigon of Mending, Ajani's MantraMTG Card: Ajani's Mantra, Landbind RitualMTG Card: Landbind Ritual, Suture PriestMTG Card: Suture Priest, Renewed FaithMTG Card: Renewed Faith and Angel's MercyMTG Card: Angel's Mercy at a whim. I love these kind of white life-gain decks that are impossible to overturn. Please, take a look at my standard deck deck:spirited-chalice and comment on it. I could use some good ideas. :)

March 2, 2012 6:41 p.m.

BuLLZ3Y3 says... #32

Haha, you've basically built a Martyr-Proc deck, without the Proclamation of RebirthMTG Card: Proclamation of Rebirth. I would seriously suggest adding Path to ExileMTG Card: Path to Exile mainboard though. You'll find that with no spot removal, you're in for a world of hurt, even with all the lifegain.

I would suggest removing Sun Droplet for Path's. Even though Droplet is really good with Ajani's PridemateMTG Card: Ajani's Pridemate, you're gaining so much life with this deck it's not as needed as I think Path is.

Good looking deck, +1.

P.S. Check out my Modern Deck, U/W Tron! :)

Since Modern is 8th edition forward, why sideboard Day of JudgmentMTG Card: Day of Judgment instead of Wrath of GodMTG Card: Wrath of God? Same mana cost, but Wrath makes it so the destroyed creatures can't regenerate. I mean, I understand Day is cheaper to get your hands on, but Wrath isn't ridiculously priced.

Otherwise, I think this is awesome.

March 4, 2012 2:02 a.m.

Minousmancer says... #36

I agree with djgunn. The only thing that would get by Wrath of GodMTG Card: Wrath of God is Undying creatures, Day of JudgmentMTG Card: Day of Judgment has it's place in standard but not here in 'Modern' unless you rume both as a filter.

March 4, 2012 2:10 a.m.

Minousmancer says... #37

Random question, why 2xKabira CrossroadsMTG Card: Kabira Crossroads and not four, with 18xPlainsMTG Card: Plains?

March 4, 2012 2:12 a.m.

djgunn says... #38

I have to also agree with Minousmancer. 4x Kabira CrossroadsMTG Card: Kabira Crossroads with 18x PlainsMTG Card: Plains would be pretty boss. You're going to make sure you'll hit those Crossroads, but it still won't be inconvenient.

March 4, 2012 2:16 a.m.

djgunn says... #39

Also, just a consideration...

Faith's ShieldMTG Card: Faith's Shield. I know you're pretty much guaranteed to never have the Fateful Hour portion trigger, but the ability to give any permanent you control protection from the color of your choice at instant speed? Pretty boss.

You guys are all right about Wrath of GodMTG Card: Wrath of God, but a playset costs as much as this entire deck... not really worth it for a semi-casual deck. I really appreciate the feedback though. I've upped Kabira CrossroadsMTG Card: Kabira Crossroads to 4x. Thanks everyone!

Not at anything officially sanctioned. But the MTG club at my university had a modern tournament and I got 2nd place in it with this deck.

im going to note i have not read any of the comments above because there are a lot and honestly i dont want to read them all but i like the idea of the deck but it needs a safety card that can bring cards from the graveyard like Elixir of Immortality or something like that it could really help if you become creatureless

just build that deck with small changes.Removed Rox and 7 Plains, allways had too much lands.Therefor I've added 2x Well of Lost Dreams, 2 aditional Oblivion Ring, 4x Dazzling Reflection, 2x Elixir of Immortality.

Works pretty well now :)

Maybe consider Buried Ruin to bring back destroyed Chalices? or Faith's Shield to give them and your Pridemates some protection?
