Tokens + TalrandI got enemies, got a lotta enemies, got a lot of people tryna drain me of this energy - MC Talrand, Rap Summoner as he summons thirty fly drake rappers on one turn.

Hey guys, this is Talrand commander deck. I've been working on it since about mid-summer and I'm open to suggestions. Originally, I was on a super tight budget and the deck cost less than twenty dollars made from scraps I had laying around. If you have a desire to make this deck yourself, I suggest you do the same! Play with your favorite counterspells, bounce spells, and draw spells. Now, on to the deck.

Commander

Talrand, Sky SummonerTalrand is one of those cards simply begging to be broken. Each time you play an instant or sorcery, you add a drake to the battlefield. So what are we trying to do here? Control the battlefield, and as we do so flood the board with drakes.

Core card types

In this deck, we have five core card types. The deck can be built using virtually any cards, so long as they fall under these types. To improve the deck simply add more quality versions of these cards. It's also worth noting that this deck loves cards that untap its mana such as Snap, Frantic Search, and card:turn about.

Counterspells

The classic control card. They play a spell, you say no and get a drake. Simple to understand. In the late game Mana Leak tends to lose power, but can still offer significant resistance.Do not try to go without counterspells. They are your bread and butter.

Draw, Draw, Draw

This deck needs a full hand (see Reliquary Tower) of answers. Have nothing in your hand but Impulse? That's okay, fear that Progenitus not. This is the part where the deck shines. Maybe you don't find your counter in the top four, but you do find a Dig Through Time. Drop that sucker, exile your trash graveyard, grab your favorite counter from the next seven and send that hydra back where it belongs, the command zone. In that whole process, by the way, you made three drakes.Card draw keeps you alive, it fuels your engine. Run plenty. I think my favorite commander draw spell is Minds Aglow. Unless you have asshole friends, everyone is going to draw like 14 cards.

Bounce

Didn't have a counter in time for that Wurmcoil Engine? Have no fear, Unsummon it first time it attacks you and Essence Scatter it next time. Bounce is the blue removal, and its great for tempo. Sure, it doesn't permanently solve a problem, but it slows opponents down and makes them think twice about attacking you. Did I mention that each time you do this, you get a drake? Some bounce spells like Aether Gale are huge and can clear the way for your drakes.

Freeze

Similar to bounce, freezing troublesome creatures can give you just enough time to come up with something more permanent. I like Ojutai's Breath for this deck because rebound makes an extra drake.

Synergy Cards

This is where it gets fun. Have Jace's Sanctum in play? Now each of your instants and sorceries make drakes, and let you scryDon't think thirteen flying 2/2s is enough? Fret no more and turn them into 14/14s with Coat of ArmsWant double the mana? Play Elite Arcanist exiling card:hightide and you, my friend, have an unstoppable mana + drake machine.Run tutors, planeswalkers, anything that buffs instants and sorceries. Whatever you have in your collection that just screams to be in this deck, use it. Where else was I going to play my Disciple of the Ring?

Other options

Of course, not all cards fall under these categories. This deck has all kinds of goodies such as Rite of Replication and Learn from the Past that work well with it. Mana rocks, like Sol Ring are a must. It just comes down to what you like. If you want to be more aggressive, add Delver of Secrets  . I didn't do it because it didn't directly support drake generation.

In the future, I'm plan on continuing the upgrading of this deck. Cryptic Command, Time Warp. The works. In the end, though, you can play this deck for less than ten dollars if you just throw it together with what you've got. Hell, you could build something similar on mtgo for your first five tix and your starter cards.
