Maybeboard

This was (close) to my Game Day deck for DTK. This will probably sit on the shelf for a while as Magic will be nigh inaccessible during the coming months. May revive it in time for the Origins core set.

The plan:

Step 1: Keep the board clear for ~12 turns.

Step 2: Cast a difficult-to-remove dragon onto an empty field.

Step 3: Gnaw on your opponent's face until they fall over.

Mainboard

I'll skip over Dig Through Time and Anticipate; it should be obvious why those are in there.

Win Conditions

Silumgar, the Drifting Death because he's a tank.

Pristine Skywise - turn your draw spells into pseudo-hexproof! Somehow I missed this gorgeous golden nugget of budgety awesome until a wise sir/madame pointed it out to me.

Removal

Ultimate Price - Kills Monastery Mentor, Goblin Rabblemaster, Seeker of the Way, Courser of Kruphix, Stormbreath Dragon, practically anything with a pulse....

Bile Blight - Hit damn near everything and kill its kin, too!

Drown in Sorrow - Hit everything, all the time, all day long. Scry 1.

Foul-Tongue Invocation - Oh, why that's a nice Fleecemane Lion/Silumgar, the Drifting Death/Dragonlord Ojutai you have there. It'd be a shame if something... happened to it....

Crux of Fate - Punish those who over-commit to the board. Kinda' buggers itself against a dragon-ramp deck.

Counterspells

Dissolve - Cancel++

Silumgar's Scorn - Cancel--

Other Stuff

Liliana Vess - Don't think of this as "dies to removal." Think of this as, at the very least, a bi-modal card. Against another black deck, tutor up a card and eat a Hero's Downfall. Against anything else, force a discard and soak up some burn damage. Or force a discard on yourself and fuel delve for your Dig Through Time (a legitimate strategy in a mirror match for your dead Ultimate Prices).

Haven of the Spirit Dragon - Recur a lost dragon.

Crucible of the Spirit Dragon - Cast a dragon while tapping only one land? Sign me up! Pure magic in a mirror-match.

Dismal Backwater and Evolving Wilds because I can't afford Polluted Delta or Flooded Strand.

Sideboard

Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver - It's fun taking a Siege Rhino for a joyride! It's even more fun watching your opponent kill it!

Duress - No more planeswalkers, sieges, force-sacs, burns... wait, Thoughtseize is better? Man, it'll be a sad day when I spend $90 on 4 pieces of cardboard.

Monastery Siege - Stop burn dead in its tracks. Well, seriously slow it down, anyway.

Negate - Win against the mirror.

Radiant Purge - Special delivery for Abzan Aggro! Works well on some Jeskai builds in a pinch.

Resolute Archangel - This is borderline mainboard. Keep her around until you're half dead, then drink a potion of health and put a beater on the field. Definitely in against anything red.

Encase in Ice - Swap Foul-Tongue Invocation for this and freeze a Stormbreath Dragon, Siege Rhino, or really anything big at instant speed!

Virulent Plague - Suck it, Elspeth, Sun's Champion. And Brimaz, King of Oreskos, Monastery Mentor, Goblin Rabblemaster, Hordeling Outburst, Dragon Fodder....

Combat Tricks

This needed its own section; there are so many shenanigans that can be pulled with this card and its trigger.

First of all, obviously the draw spells like Anticipate and Dig Through Time now do double duty, triggering the Skywise for protection of your choice.

Similarly, cards like Ultimate Price work if you can target an opponent's creature in response to a removal spell.

What if your opponent doesn't have a creature/permanent to target with Ultimate Price or Utter End? Easy. Cast a removal/debuff spell on your own creature!

In response to a Hero's Downfall or other black removal, cast Murderous Cut or Utter End or Bile Blight on your own Skywise and give it protection from black. Everything fizzles. Your Skywise sits, untapped, with a proud smirk on its cheeky face.

But why stop there? After siding, Radiant Purge is good against white removal in a pinch, so go ahead and cast that bad boy on your Skywise in response to Chained to the Rocks or Banishing Light!

If all else fails, you can just protect it with a counterspell... but imagine the look on your opponent's face when you target a kill spell at your Skywise as a combat trick!

If you want a good, non-budget version of this deck, check out ConTROLL in the Dungeon!; my money would be on that guy's deck in a duel.

Note: I built the first iteration of this deck well before seeing his version of it, but honestly, his is better. If you've sold your soul to, like, 7 demons to afford fancy cards, have a look at his.

Updates Add

Had fun at Game Day. Got a bit womped. Would totally do it again.

Sadly, this deck may get shelved as Magic will become nigh inaccessible to me over the next few months.

Got a few awesome, budget-friendly suggestions that would've made this deck a formidable, budget beast... a few hours too late for Game Day. Still cool! Still added them here for the record, and might build it accordingly should I decide I have enough time for FNM after classes in the summer.
