DORAN, THE SIEGE TOWER

Introduction

I knew I wanted to run an Abzan deck but didn't know who to run. Ghave, Guru of Spores can sneeze in a box of commons to go infinite combo. This of course is why he can carry a bad rap. I also entertained the idea of an Anafenza, the Foremost counters matters deck but slowly building your board that way leaves you very susceptible to wraths. Then I recalled Doran, the Siege Tower and put some serious thought into him. I thought about running him before but for some reason never revisited him until recently.

Doran gives a new spin on the game. His ability isn't necessarily "game-breaking" as many creatures have the same power and toughness. However, we can certainly abuse his ability. There are a slew of Meekstone-type effects out there that can punish high powered creatures. There are also a few power specific wraths like Retribution of the Meek out there that will destroy most boards while leaving mine intact. Cards like Behind the Scenes allow us to attack unimpeded taking large chunks of life from our opponents from our high toughness creatures. In essence, combining all these synergies is what gave rise to this deck.

Simplified Strategy:

Play big butts: This deck specializes in low CMC high toughness cards. I avoid Defender cards on purpose as you tend to durdle until you find Assault Formation or Rolling Stones. Cards like Tower Defense can make quick work with big butts.

Play lockdown spells: Crackdown, Meekstone, Marble Titan, Blind Obedience, Kismet ect.

Play one sided wraths based on power: Retribution of the Meek, Wave of Reckoning, Fell the Mighty

Attack freely: Behind the Scenes, Sidar Kondo of Jamuraa

What I think about when I see Doran (and it's something other than LotR): the "Whomping Willow"
