You have a very large blue mana base, and only 3 blue cards. You might consider making it just a bit smaller

I would seriously consider cutting Blue altogether, actually. Far / Away is really good, but reasonably you could replace it with Devour Flesh or the ilk. AEtherling is really good, too, but there are a plethora of other finishers in GB.

Why would you ever consider another finisher when you can run AEtherling ? If you can get to it and cast it just fine, what in the world is the point of trying to find something else?

I'd like to know more about this deck (how it performed, etc.) plus one for the weeping angel reference.

+4 Sylvan Caryatid for efficent wall against the small rakdos infamous unleashed, blood drunken zealots and a lot of berserking red creatures, and more u have mana advantage and no problem of mana color

-2 Temple of Mystery too many blue lands for only 4 blu cards, u will not play AEtherling in tapped OUT, so u can wait for the 2nd drop of blu mana.+2 Forest instead

i suggest -2 Mutavault u don't need it, u have too many double cost green or black (Desecration demon, polikranos, OOZE's ability at O'sEOT, Shaman's Ability at O'sEOT)

@ Ringhiop I'd rather have kill spells then blockers, and I don't really need mana fixing as I have not yet ran into trouble with mana. Thanks for the thoughts, though.

@ Apoptosis I've only used it once (Last FNM) and I went 3-1, losing only to an extremely fast mono-red deck. I had forgotten to put Doom Blade in my sideboard before FNM, so that probably costed me the game.

If you have trouble with super-fast red decks, have you considered Pharika's Cure sideboard?

October 9, 2013 8:42 p.m.

The Doctor says...

#9

I have not, I'll consider adding it.

October 9, 2013 8:59 p.m.

Question. Why not just go elbow deep and make it fully BUG?

October 9, 2013 9:23 p.m.

The Doctor says...

#11

Tried it. Mana curve was too hard to pull off, and I ran into A LOT of land trouble.

October 9, 2013 9:42 p.m.

averse says...

#12

I can see challenges with land trouble since several of the cards are 2 spots of one color per cast. I dont know how critical AEtherling is, but consider Lotleth Troll to smooth out the 2 drop mana curve or Reaper of the Wilds for deathtouch and hexproof combo?

October 11, 2013 11:05 p.m.

The Doctor says...

#13

The main things I use blue for are Far / Away and Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver . The singleton of AEtherling is just because it's a nice card to draw on the offchance of doing so.

October 12, 2013 12:31 p.m.

averse says...

#14

And because it's the color of the T.A.R.D.I.S., of course!

If you swap the aetherling for something non-2 spot it might help with avoiding a dead draw.

Id main putrify and side heroes downfall. The double black can be very costly if your tight on black mana. For example if you have 5 mana and only 2 of its black I'd rather be able to use both a petrify and a doom blade then get stuck with a heroes and a doom blade. Also don't cut therling he's a late game card so he shouldn't be a dead card in hand, plus once he's out he's extremely hard to get rid of. +1 for me, I think its a solid build.

I like the reference, but how does it apply to your deck?

October 27, 2013 3:33 p.m.

My name. And Reaper of the Wilds tends to be my star player. Gorgon's petrify people. So do Weeping Angels.

I say that you could cut the two Deathrite Shaman s all together. Add Liliana of the Dark Realms to tutor up those dual lands for consistency and pop pesky creatures as a bonus if you need.

I'm all for cutting the Deathrite Shaman , but I'd rather not add another 4-drop. Anything in the 1-2 drop range you can think of?

1drops and 2 drops?

Kalonian Tusker is mana intensive but stymies the damage dealt by attackers, then there's the usual assortment of mana accelerants... the deck as a whole looks like a midrange-control deck with early pressure, I personally don't think early drops are that necessary if you can 1-for-1 them with doom-blades and catch up later with additional card advantage engines later on...

If you want bodies to throw in front of attackers and/or attack, 'd suggest Shambleshark and/or Skylasher they're relatively strong if timed right.

Though i'd improve the deck by increasing it's consistency first... midrange control would need something to keep it in the game, e.g. lifegain , being a control deck would imply you're less reliant on creatures to win the game... might i suggest Whip of Erebos ? There's lifegain and virtual card advantage there, also it has the same synergy with AEtherling that it has with Obzedat, Ghost Council .

I'd say more but it's 2am here...

You can run guildgates. Just because they don't scry one doesn't mean they aren't playable in the format... I'd say don't run more than 8 lands that etb tapped
