Doctor Teferi, Sorcerer Supreme

Commander / EDH Artifact Control Mono-Blue Stax

By the Hoary Hosts of Hoggoth

My name is Doctor Stephen Strange; I am what they call the Sorcerer Supreme on Earth. Defender of the dimension my world lies within.

On a recent encounter with the Cosmic Entity known as Eternity, it was deemed that my power was stretching beyond the capacity that those who watch over the multiverse deemed 'controllable.'

I was faced with the judgement of Equity, Vengeance and Necessity - The faces of The Living Tribunal:

enter image description here

It was by their decree, that my essence be scattered across the multiverse - so that I may never be whole and thus my power never fully realized once again. Over time, across the vastness of space and the multitude of systems and planes of existence, my essence lay dormant in the souls of a select few individuals. When certain conditions were met, their souls released part of my essence, awakening an inner state of existence and merely tasting a glimpse of my power.

This would come to be known as the Planeswalker Spark.

Despite being fragmented and scattered, my astral body remained in tact, and I became observant of particular individuals. I followed the human Urza during his inevitable awakening, only to pass his spark onto the mage Teferi. I grew fond of temporal powers this mage possessed, and during one of his practiced rifts in time, I appeared to him. His first reaction was to alter my temporal state; needless to say the attempt was futile, and I quickly bound him with the Sapphire Bands of Storaan. I found Teferi to be quite headstrong - just as I was when I first began my training.

I retold my experiences to him, and explained my shards of essence acting as Planeswalker Sparks across the multiverse. I then began to explain my interest in him and the potential he has. Without much time he studied my binding spell and made quick work at dissipating it. Fascinated with the ability to lock one's opponent in place, he pleaded that I teach him all that I know.

I proposed a better alternative - my astral form was absorbed into the being known as Teferi, now fully realized as Teferi, Temporal Archmage. With this newfound access to mana he previously could not comprehend, Teferi now wishes to expand his knowledge of spells to design a prison unlike any have ever witnessed.

The purpose of this EDH build is Teferi Stax, making use of the infinite loop involving Chain Veil. Disclaimer: This is inspired by the Tier-example decklist, composed by the Neunviertel so if you want an infinitely more optimized deck check out: Chain Veil Teferi

For those who may not know what the Chain Veil loop actually does, the artifact modifies the rules of the game, affecting Planeswalkers you control when the ability is resolved and Planeswalkers that come into play later that turn. What this essentially means is that we can activate the Chain Veil a number of times, cast Teferi earning our free activations, and recast him with that same number of free activations. This can net you some mana, though there are going to be a number of infinite mana outlets provided. Alternatively, you can also use his plus ability to draw out your deck. The outlets we have for this are Ugin, the Spirit Dragon to bolt the table, or Jace, Memory Adept to mill the board. I personally wanted another Walker-specific outlet to win, in case either are countered or exiled.

There are a number of infinite mana outlets that are provided to ensure we're generating what we need.

Basalt Monolith + Rings of Brighthearth - provided you have roughly open mana, this provides an infinite mana outlet. Remember, you are copying the untap ability of Basalt, since you cannot obviously copy the mana ability.

Grim Monolith + Power Artifact a stronger way of producing infinite colourless mana. Power Artifact reduces the activated ability by 2. So you tap to float 3 mana, using 2 to untap the monolith, rinse and repeat.

Grand Architect + Pili-Pala a combo that's near and dear to my heart. Provided you have a source open, you turn Pili-Pala into a blue creature with Grand Architect's ability, tap it as a result producing . Use that to untap Pili-Pala, making mana of any colour. I like this infinite mana resource more, if only for the fact that it produces any colour.

This is where the deck starts to lose its charm, and quickly becomes a target for every other opponent. The premise of Stax is essentially positioning your opponent in such restricted conditions where they are locked down and unable to continue.

Here are all the "Sapphire Bands of Storaan"

The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale - the Land of all lands. This is the antithesis to any creature deck. Since this runs so few, we care not for the cost of keeping them in play, and whether your opponents run token decks, or merely rely on creatures that accelerate their gameplan, they will ultimately be forced to sacrifice them.

Cursed Totem - Another taxing effect for any creature based deck.

Torpor Orb - a wonderful card that negates various commanders; Generals like Marath, Will of the Wild will enter the battlefield nothing, for example. General Tazri would enter without its ability to Tutor for Ally Creatures. And so on.

Grafdigger's Cage - a penultimate graveyard-hate card. This curbstomps various reanimator strategies.

Overburden - Ttribal decks may not be a thing in the cEDH community, but the strength of this card goes well beyond that. Any accelerated deck relying on quick mana dorks will be slowed down with the removal of their land.

Stasis - a global effect where everyone skips their untap step. Fortunately for a Sorcerer Supreme (and Planeswalker) we care little for this since we can untap at will.

Pendrell Mists - Slightly overkill, this is another Tabernacle effect, in case our land is targeted, or vice versa.

Back to Basics - The card that has been errata'd to read "I sure hope you don't run a basicless Hermit Druid combo..."

If you've made it this far, thank you for taking the time in viewing my iteration of Teferi! I hope you got a kick out of the Marvel theme.

As always I appreciate the support and feedback from the community; it gives me a reason to continue doing what I do!

Asked a friend what they'd recommend for this list:

"I recommend burning it with fire."

I seem to be on the right track.

Lilbrudder need a little help brosef. I thought of an alternate wincon using Jace but I wonder if there's anything else? Also questioning some of the counterspells...

Since you are playing high tide why not Candelabra of Tawnos? Budget does not seem to be an issue with your landbase. It would help with your infinite Chain viel combo as it could often tap for a net positive UUU or at least UU on your combo turn. I would also cut a couple utility lands to up your island count. This will also help you with back to basics. I am not sold on pendrel mists. Add some Metalworker. Like I said before I am not an expert on these things.

Pendrell Mists was sort of the budget version of Tabernacle, for anyone who can't afford a >1000 card from Legends. Which also includes myself at the moment; I'm using this as a way to know what I need to save for, so for the meantime my . I only just bought a pristine Gaea's Cradle for Leo!

Candelabra and Metalworker seems great in this! I was trying to keep the creature count down for the tax effects; I'm already running about 2 more than I should with the Pili-Pala combo.

And perhaps you're right; maybe jump up to 20 island and take out Buried Ruin, or Seat of the Synod? Inventor's Fair is super useful to tutor for Chain Veil.

Oh my bad I saw your mana base and it looked like overkill. I am not a high tide player, i know its good but I hate the card. High tide players are freaking loony about thier island count. They wont even play Inventors' Fair, in an engine build in mono blue, which I think is insanity...Its a freaking ritual ffs, but I am guessing if they are that adamant about it they must be somewhat right at least. Those 2 would be my first cuts.

Maybe I missed it, or something, but I don't see a Force of Will anywhere on the board. Did you purposefully omit it?

MrAwesomeSocks whoops, nope it's in the paper build mate thanks for that.

This may see a home here. With Teferi's untap, ramping should be a synch.

What makes Teferi good? I think it's one of the worst planeswalkers ever, his ultimate is too expensive, his first isn't and good as some of the Jace's, and his second is only good if you base your deck around it.

Thank you for commenting! The reason Teferi is largely considered a Tier 1 general, up against General Tazri, Prossh, Jeleva, etc, is because of the infinite combo with the Chain Veil. It's a very unique and obscure ruling that affects spells entering the battlefield (Planeswalkers in this case) after the ability has been activated.

Because of this, Teferi can -1, untap four permanents - including the Chain Veil, reactivating it to continue until he's sent to the command zone. When he's recast (keep in mind we have an infinite mana source via Basalt/Rings, or Grim/Power Artifact), he gets those same number of free activations you had already used with the chain veil. So say you used his minus ability 5 times (sending him to the command zone), he enters with 5 free activations plus the one you get for casting him.

This is why he's incredibly powerful. The combo in this deck is built around that, and the outlets are Walker-specific, with Ugin entering with an infinite amount of activations to bolt the table, or Jace Memory Adept to mill the table.

I'm sure we could debate Teferi's card advantage may not be as good as Jace the Mind Sculptor, but alas, only Teferi can be played as a commander.

And honestly, even his minus ability doesn't necessarily need to be built around to be useful. Costing 6 CMC in total and using his minus ability right off the bat allows you to potentially untap the lands you used to cast him. In other generals like Brago, King Eternal, this can be broken.

Nice looking deck and a great description, +1 from me!! Also, not too important but there is a small typo in your description... Torpor Orb does nothing to prossh, his effect is a casting trigger like the eldrazi titans. Maybe choose another example, like tazri. Nice work.

You are very correct, and thanks for noticing!

April 11, 2017 3:17 p.m.

entheogeneral says... #17

Okay, I can see why you like him, still, if you want that combo more, you should get more tutor spells and planeswalkers.

April 11, 2017 9:01 p.m.

n0bunga says... #18

Fair point for sure! I think one thing most people don't realize is Teferi is a tutor on a body with how this goes. I have tutors for artifacts, tutors for artifact tutors, lands that tutor artifacts, and when that combo is online Teferi can quintessentially draw my deck out! Or untap my permanents. And Chain Veil solidifies that.

I did take a look at other walkers, honestly, a more optimized build solely runs Ugin because it's that consistent. I prefer Jace as an alternative in case Ugin gets exiled. Jace can mill a table and as a last resort, Blue Sun's Zenith is a final outlet.

entheogeneral says... #19

Those seem like good options. In my opinion, Karn Liberated is the best colourless walker though. Ugin is pretty sweet to though. But yeah, great deck, I'd hate to play against it

April 12, 2017 2:06 p.m.

n0bunga says... #20

I love Karn and his lore; I'm actually just in the midst of the Mirrodin Cycle books! But as an outlet it's very dependent on:

  • Cards in hand, and;
  • Cards in play

Compared to Ugin, there's no question who serves the better infinite Chain Veil activation outlet. The ability to bolt a table of 1-X number of opponents for lethal damage is intrinsically more useful than exiling hands or permanents. If you'd really wish, you could use the CVA's to abuse all of Karn's abilities and restarting the game, with everyone's things on your end, but it seems more of a "win more" card, if that makes sense.

If we were talking flavour or lore, my vote is with Karn, unquestionably.

April 12, 2017 2:36 p.m.

This is awesome!! I love the flavor. I built a Teferi deck with Quest for Ula's Temple and a bunch of sea creatures and was calling it my Aquaman deck!

Hah! I love it!

Just the pyramid of the pantheon

Lolz, thats what ive been saying to people who say "yea idk..." about it. They are insane. 1 mana gilded lotus that by turn 3 you could have online? Its soooo good

April 15, 2017 12:12 p.m.

n0bunga says... #27

Hell yeah! Especially with the Mana rocks in Teferi, getting 3 bricks should be a walk in the park.

I probably should just run Isochron Sceptor + Dramatic Reversal . . .
