Do A Baral Roll - Baral $40 Budget Counterspells

Commander / EDH Budget Counters Mono-Blue Tokens

The #1 Baral deck on TappedOut!

In my ongoing endeavor to bring frugality to Commander, each card in this deck is under $2 and the whole deck is under $40. If you like what you see, UPVOTE! or you can check out all my other $40 budget decks. If you see some areas of improvement, let me know what you'd change. Just make sure all suggested cards are under $2.

1) Get Baral, Chief of Compliance onto the battlefield

2) Say no with your counterspells only to the things that will disrupt your commander and your plan

3) Follow one of the win cons to victory

1) Token army from Talrand, Sky Summoner / Docent of Perfection  Flip / Lullmage Mentor / Rise from the Tides

2) Massive damage from Sphinx-Bone Wand / Runechanter's Pike

3) Ludevic's Test Subject  Flip

4) Encourage multiple opponents to go after each other

5) Table-flipping concession by an opponent who is tired of not being able to do anything

Top notch stuff. This is something I think a lot of people will get behind. +1 indeed.

Ethereal Usher's transmute ability could offer a nice way to fetch Guile or Arcanis.

I like the deck a lot; +1 from me.

@slaftergames: Thanks for the +1 and the suggestion! Initially I wasn't a huge fan, but after thinking about it Guile and Arcanis the Omnipotent are two of the more effective ways to get to victory (stealing other people's spells and massive card draw). Swapped out Summary Dismissal for it. Thanks!

Adding Library of Leng might be good so you don't have to discard something you want

Love it!!!! I've been wanting to try Baral as a commander. How has the experience in multiplayer been with this deck? Can't wait to put something together where my opponents always have to ask if their cards will resolve :D

Questions: I notice you have Diluvian Primordial and Blighted Cataract listed on the decklist twice - what's up with that?

Is the reason you have Lonely Sandbar and Remote Isle for the cycling? Does that work with Baral's ability?

Less than $2 Suggestions:

Fatestitcher: Can tap to tap or untap a permanent, but also has unearth for 1. Great choice to discard w/ Baral, and with just the right combination you could likely get it back to your hand and need to exile it after unearthing.

If you are going to have a lot of Wizard tokens on the board from Docent of Perfection, maybe Voidmage Prodigy.

More budget counterspells: Faerie Trickery, Memory Lapse. Maybe these could be sub in for Cancel and Swan Song? I like the cheap cost of swan song but with Baral on the board, Memory Lapse only costs 1 and isn't limited to type of spell it can counter, and won't give them a bird.

Over $2 Suggestions:

Remand: 2 mana for a counterspell, return it to owner's hand and you draw one. Could replace Negate. $5

I don't think the goal of this deck is to mill your opponent, so maybe for card draw instead of Sphinx's Tutelage, go with Rhystic Study. Currently around $9.

I know this is a budget deck, but Reliquary Tower would fit like a glove here, as well as Thing in the Ice  Flip.

@lightningtwister: Can't believe I forgot about Library of Leng. Added immediately!

@Trendy67: I haven't put this together in real life. My deck Tangled Up In Blue - Talrand Morph used to have the same theme, but I found it difficult to operate in multiplayer in my competitive playgroup so I switched it to a combo deck. 1v1 it was a beast though. Diluvian Primordial and Blighted Cataract are only in the deck once but because I put them in two different categories (it's how I like to organize my decks), it looks like they're two copies. Lonely Sandbar and Remote Isle are in for cycling ability and while it does not work with Baral's ability (cycling is an activated ability), late game when you don't need the land, it's nice to sift for something useful. Outside of combo decks, Fatestitcher doesn't have a whole lot of value. The interaction between Voidmage Prodigy and Docent of Perfection  Flip is nice, however with no tutors due to budget, finding/waiting for it would be aggravating. Faerie Trickery and Memory Lapse are good so I shoved those in. Remand and Rhystic Study are also good but I set a hardcap of nothing over $2.

@Clockwurk: Thanks!

@AlbinoNinja: At some point, I'll make an upgrade list for bigger budgets and these will definitely be on there.

Disciple of the Ring for a little flexibility with spells that you aren't grabbing back from the bin.

Deck looks good. I'm all for a budget Commander brew, nice job.

I wish I could comment about your deck further, but I can't because of the background. Change it or decrease the opacity of the areas where the content that you want people to read is. The background, it's overwhelmingly distracting making it very hard to read the decklist and comments about your deck.

I'm building a Baral EDH deck based on yours, thanks ! Seems pretty solid :)

I've added a few budget cards you might be interested in :

  • Essence Scatter (I feel we need this against aggresive decks)

  • Scatter to the Winds (good 3cmc counter)

  • Ludevic's Test Subject (another finisher)

  • Ovinize (to handle creatures. Plus it's flavorful)

  • Thought Vessel (good rock in this deck)

  • Tolarian Winds (looks like a nice drawing machine)

(plus a few non budget cards)

Cards I'd consider taking out :

  • Disdainful Stroke (too conditional)

  • Foil (I feel like I won't ever play it for it's alternative cost so I'd rather have a 3cmc counter instead of this)

  • Insidious Will (too expensive)

  • Grip of Phyresis (can be dead pretty often)

  • High Tide (I don't see the point)

  • The recursive package (I doesn't synergize with Homonculus, nor the Runechanter's Pike, and I just don't see the point)

  • Is Azami that good ? It's pretty expensive.

Take into account the fact that it would be my first Commander deck, so I may be completely wrong in my analysis ;)

@TwerkForSubway: Disciple of the Ring is a really good card and could totally go in this deck. I just opted for the really long game win and left it out :)

@multimedia: It's true. I need to go around and adjust the backgrounds on a couple of my decks. I went ahead and darkened this one significantly so it should be much better.

@Oracular: Great suggestions! Let me get to all of them:

Essence Scatter is ok, I'm just not a huge fan of creature only counters...personal preference. Scatter to the Winds is again ok, but for 3cmc I like counters to exile and this deck doesn't really support awaken. Ludevic's Test Subject  Flip is a good finisher and we could use another. Ovinize is solid. Thought Vessel is great but over $2 so I can't include it. Tolarian Winds is a really good hand refill.

Disdainful Stroke is a personal fave because it counters any board wipe. Foil is great for competitive decks where we want 0 cmc counters but it's not needed for this deck. Insidious Will probably is a little expensive. Grip of Phyresis is another personal fave and in multiplayer somebody is bound to have a great equipment. High Tide is an autoinclude in all my mono-blue decks but I didn't think it through for this one and it's true that it's completely unnecessary. The recursion is in because I have multiple mill players and this deck is built for the very long haul. With 6 wizards (including my commander) and a wizard producer, Azami is phenomenal.

Neat deck, by the way why no sol ring in any of your budget decks

@The_2ndpanda: Thanks for the +1 and comment! I picked $2 as the arbitrary cost that all cards in my budget decks have to be under and even with all the reprints, Sol Ring remains just north of that. If it ever drops below $2, it will immediately go in all of them.
