Sideboard

Maybeboard

cost is $26!!!

(This is using what I found from TCG Player)

What we have here is a mono black discard midrange aiming to attack the hand and already played creatures. We win through CA via Arguel's Blood Fast   or Midnight Reaper, or we can also win through reanimating a big fatty with The Eldest Reborn/a pumped Dread Shade.

Pilfering Imp- a flexible source of hand hate that is a cheap body to sac to Plaguecrafter. It’s self sacrifice ability also has synergy with Midnight Reaper.

Deadeye Tracker- with two of the big meta standard decks interacting with the graveyard and us filling the yard for them it would be foolish not to include some mainboard gy hate.

Kitesail Freebooter- excellent hand disruption on a stick. Just a solid card.

Burglar Rat- a weaker version of the aforementioned card but has the upside of being sac fodder for Plaguecrafter

Dusk Legion Zealot- sort of the inverse effect of Burglar Rat with the same upside. I chose to do play 4 zealot because 23 lands is slightly too few so the additional card draw lets us hit our land drops. Additionally, drawing cards is always useful while forcing the opponent to discard a card is only useful when they have cards to discard.

Isareth the Awakener- not a slam dunk draw and is legendary therefor it deserves a one of slot.

Ravenous Chupacabra, similarly to Burglar Rat and Dusk Legion Zealot provide a strange type of CA as they all add a body to the field while either putting the opponent down a card, us up a card, or them down a creature.

I plan on accumulating the cards to build this deck on Arena over thanksgiving break. Until then, this current set up seems like a reasonable sideboard.

3x Wretched Camel (HOU)

This was version one. This is the unedited previous description of the deck.

This deck has gone 3-2 against other standard decks. I will try to update this number every time I play a best of three in both competitive and semi-competitive matches.

Thank you all who helped get this deck to the top ten of TO. Help me out and if you like the deck please upvote! Please don't just folder the deck without an upvote. Hope you enjoy!

An example of play:

1: harsh scrutiny. Usually remove their creature with the lowest Cmc. Scry.

2: kitesail freebooter. Remove any removal.

3: swing with freebooter and cast heartless pillage.

At this point in the game they should be down to 1 cards in hand not to mention very mad. (This assumes they played a land each turn, slipped one creature in and went first.

And so on... once we are out of cards we can play arguel's bloodfast to regain card advantage or start saccing lands.

card break down

Supernatural Stamina brings back the camel or pumps the dreamstealer. Both have the same result... extra discard. Also has a neat synergy with banewhip punisher allowing it to destroy two creatures for a total of five cmc.

Wretched Camel makes the opponent question whether to attack, block, and their life choices. TRIPPLE WHAMMY!!!

Dreamstealer kill it. I dare you.

Torment of Venom Kills or seriously debilitates a creature and usually deals 3 damage.

Heartless Pillage is the strongest discard spell and a treasure bonus which certainly never hurts. I am considering Unburden as a replacement because it has cycling and since the opponent might not even have cards in hand it isn't always relevant. I think I'll go with both. (Update: unburden has proved to be a bit better so I am removing all my heartless pillages from the deck)

Walk the Plank is strong removal.

Banewhip Punisher doubles as removal but ideally will wear on the opponents life 2 damage at a time. Works well with our land base as well.

Doomfall is just insanely good cause it kills hexproof and we can deal with rest with never, banewhip, or walk the plank.

arguel's bloodfast is a late game draw engine and should grind us to a win. Almost never flip it. A time to flip it is when you have already achieved board control and you have the mana to sac and eternalize a dream stealer.

Harsh Scrutiny is better than duress in current meta but would be boarded out against control.

Kitesail Freebooter is the hostage taker of the discard world.

My land base is a late game desperate attempt to crank out an edge over my opponents.

sideboard

Yahenni's Expertise is for all the ultra aggro, and token decks.

Duress wrecks control

Sentinel Totem since I'm loading my opponents graveyard I could actually be helping them.

Torment of Scarabs is for midrange and control decks.

So that’s the deck! If you like it as always give her a vote!

I took this snazzy deck to a small modern fnm and it was excellent. I managed to go 2-1. Here is the game break down.

Round 1: 1-2. I played against a red white burn deck. Game one I won because he got mana screwed. Game two I lost because I got mana screwed. Game three was insanely close. We both drew well and our decks both performed correctly. It ended with my opponent at 1 life, no hand, and him top decking a burn spell for the win.

Round 2: 2-0. Somebody else was crazy enough to bring a standard deck and paid the price. It was kinda close but I pulled ahead both games. Again my opponent had no hand.

Round 3: 2-1. The first game was super upsetting. I was facing an infinite combo mill deck and it ended with my opponent at 3 life and me at 19. I unknowingly set off the combo by killing one of his creatures with torment of venom and then died. The next two games were close but lost legacy killed his combo and I won.

I'd say 2-1 in modern isn't to shabby for this cheap of a standard deck. After the fnm I played a standard RDW and won 2-1 and then played a single game against a hapatra -1/-1 counters deck and dismantled fairly easily partially because of my opponent not drawing well but regardless I think I would have won. Cards I never sideboarded in include torment of scarabs, yahenni's expertise and my totem. Considering running Scavenger Grounds mainboard and getting rid of the totem in exchange for more duress and removal. The biggest over-performer was ifnir deadlands. This card saved me probably around 6 times.
