The idea of the PreCon-Series

Starting in 2014 my playgroup meets every 2 month where we play the out of the box preconstructed decks that get released every year.

Commander 2013-2016

Since some of us had own ideas for cool deck themes we came up with some guidelines for deckbuilding in order to keep our existing decks relevant. Besides that limiting ourselves to a certain budget demands a higher level of creativity and enables us to be more focused on the decks flavor when brewing.

________

All the Mill-Fun with no infinite combs and bad feelings

The first time I saw The Scarab God card I knew I had to build a deck around him that supports all facetes of this truly glorious commander!

I started playing Magic in 1999, but my first FNM experiences had been during the first Ravnica Block. I had a lot of fun with my Dimir Deck on tournaments driving my opponents crazy. So it was clear to me that I have to build a Mill themed deck. And what goes really well with full graveyards? - Right, Zombies! The Scarab God was just the perfect commander I waited all years for!

Two other really good Dimir-Commanders I consider alternatives are Phenax, God of Deception and Lazav, Dimir Mastermind. Phenax is very nice for competitive 1v1 Matches, when you want to fully focus on the Milling Win-Con. Lazav instead is a very versatile commander that can quickly adapt to your opponents strategies. The Scarab God is right inbetween these two guys, a well-balanced mix of control and versatility.

Since I don't hate my friends I had to come up with a slow and steady Mill-Strategy. Most PreCons start going off at Turn 5 and later, not earlier - so I skipped any Tutor-cards and infinite-combs like Traumatize + Fraying Sanity or Mindcrank + Bloodchief Ascension / Duskmantle Guildmage. A pure Mill-WinCon seemed too hard to pull off with these limitations so I added lots of cards for the "graveyard-matters" theme.

Running many resurrection- and copy-abilities enables me to hide behind a huge horde of zombies while filling my opponents graveyards and zombifying their most valuable creatures, making me a very versatile threat. The deck is ridiculously synergetic.

I don't want to speak ill of my deck, but it has it's loopholes so that the PreCon Decks have a good chance against it. I played both with and against the deck and out of 12 games I played (4 players) the deck won around 65%. The matches all were very exiting and everyone was really digging the Mill-Deck, since it made the cards in your library a scarce resource that you had to protect like your lifepoints!

The best deck against The Scarab God is of course the Meren of Clan Nel Toth deck which clearly profits of a filled graveyard. At one point my brother had a Vulturous Zombie with power / defense of 128 on the field. In another match I had a chance to resurrect the Vulturous Zombie with Phenax, God of Deception on the field. You can imagine how this turned out! I tapped Vulturous Zombie each turn quadrupling his stats each time while milling the crap out of everyone!

Other cool combs that got pulled off where Undead Alchemist + Phenax, God of Deception nearly duplicating the zombies each turn and Jace, Memory Adept -7 Ability + Sphinx's Tutelage removing 60+ cards from a deck at once.

Brain Feast

This deck is just perfect for my playgroup and I wont change a card. I can only recommend building and testing it for yourself, but you are invited to give it your own twist of course - I added some suggestions for a more competitive approach into the sideboard.

Remember to upvote if you like the deck and check out my other decks I am planning right now! ;)

________

The Precon - Power Level Series

This Deck ist part of the Precon-Power Level series I'm planning. The deckbuilding guidlines are:

  • Price-Range: 50$ - 170$ (Always considering the cheapest version of the card)
  • Up to 3 Legendary Creatures with Commander Identity
  • Would be great if all possible Commanders are equally viable in the deck. Preconstructed Decks often tend to have multiple win conditions evolving around given three legendary creatures. Furtherly you won't run into focussing too aggresively on one win condition like most 100%-Power Level decks do. Besides that it's nice to switch the commander sometimes to get another perspective on your deck.
  • Avoid heavy / easy tutoring like Diabolic Intent
  • Sol Ring allowed
  • 1-2 rare lands
  • Some conventional mana-artifacts
  • Maximum of 45 Rares, for each Mythic -2,5 Rares (rounding off; Example: 7 Mythics -> 27 Rares allowed)
  • Avoid infinite combs or overpowered singles that make everyone at the table hate you (Looking at you Iona, Shield of Emeria)
  • Add some flavor and / or tribal according to own taste
  • No reserved list cards
  • Go for an overall Power Level between 50-65%, you can check the preconstructed Deck Lists for downgrade-inspirationMy other decks of this series:
