Summary

Hey tappedout, it's getting to be Journey time and with it we have some cool interactions with Notion Thief. Early game we have some draw fixing and hand disruption, the standard black fare we're all used to. Mid game we have some fat fliers, literally, in the form of Big D and Bigger D. The deck hits hard and fuels card draw into the mid-game with the smooth Lotion Thief, blazing through your deck at light speed when the combo hits.

Card Breakdown

Creatures

  • Dakra Mystic: Awesome 1 drop that digs on turn 2 or disrupts your opponent's draw, sending that pesky Thassa to the grave.
  • Brain Maggot : Welcome addition the hand disruption family. Hopefully you can get a few points of damage in. He serves as a crucial part of this deck to keep your notion thief alive in the later portions of the game by exiling your opponent's removal spells.
  • Master of the Feast: Plays into our combo with Notion Thief, drawing you two cards per turn. Make sure to play him turn 4, so you can flash in the Thief at your upkeep of turn 5. The 5/5 flier is a welcome addition to Big D Team.
  • Nightveil Specter: Gets you a card every turn if you deal player damage, what isn't to like?
  • Desecration Demon: I'm sure everyone is acquainted with him by now.
  • Notion Thief: The all-star commander in chief, netting you sweet card advantage.
Other
  • Cyclonic Rift: Solid bounce spell with overload that reads: win target game.
  • Hero's Downfall: Standard creature/ planeswalker removal.
  • Negate: Can be switched out for your counterspell of choice but I'm personally a fan of Negate more so than Dissolve or Syncopate. 2 mana is so easy to keep open in the early stages and we don't have to overspend in the later stages like syncopate makes us do. We have creature removal to make up for the downside of this counter.
  • Ultimate Price: It's either this or Doom Blade and this one hits more creatures than the latter.
  • Thoughtseize: The single most annoying card in standard. Needs no introduction
  • Dictate of Kruphix: Flash it in at the end of your turn 3, get your card draw on, then play Notion Thief at their upkeep to get another.
  • Whip of Erebos: In my opinion, tied as the best Enchantment Artifact with Bident of Thassa. The lifelink will keep you in the game when you're on the back foot and the reanimation is a life saver. Plays well with throwing creatures to the grave via Dakra Mystic if you happened to be searching for something else instead.
  • Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx: Any deck running Nightveil Specter should have a copy of this card. This card will assist us in dropping our hand in the later stages when we start refilling it with Notion Thief.

Combos

  1. Dakra Mystic + Notion Thief draws you two cards for one mana.
  2. Master of the Feast + Notion Thief draws you an extra card at your upkeep.
  3. Dictate of Kruphix + Notion Thief draws another card at your opponent's upkeep.

If you can get Notion Thief out with a draw creature/ Dictate, and have him stick for a few turns, the card advantage you generate is usually game winning. Any suggestions are welcome!

Went 3-1 at FNM

Match 1: Win vs Selesnya
This deck was sort of a casual/ janky deck and he didn't seem to have any options for my big demons.

Match 2: Win vs Izzet
This deck was sort of a human/ izzet control deck with keranos. Game 1, cyclonic rift won me the game, even though he had some buff humans with a door of destiny out. He runs izzet staticaster with gorgons head combo to snipe creatures. Unfortunately, dakra mystic and notion thief got sniped but he wasn't able to get the combo. Game 2, thoughtseize wrecked his hand and he had no answers to my master of the feast/ notion thief combo. I drew into my removal with the combo and was drawing 2 on my turn and an extra on his turn thanks to dictate of kruphix.

Match 3: 1-2 Loss vs American Control
Won round 1, was able to flash in my notion thief and draw 5 cards off of Sphinxs revelation. I was able to bury a supreme verdict with dakra mystic and i negated an anger of the gods. My demons and a gray merchant won the game. Games 2 and 3 I had no answers to Keranos. I did flash him in to draw a card off of a land draw, got a couple demons out but got supreme verdicted, and lost to aetherling. Game 3, I had him the next turn but he top decked supreme verdict with 1 card in hand.

Match 4: Win vs Maze's End/ Control
I was able to bury all 3 of his izzet guildgates with my dakra mystic before he could get maze's end out. At that point, he had no wincon since he doesn't run any big bomb creatures. I eventually burned all his damage prevention out and was able to whittle him down. Game 2, I thoughtseized a slaughter games from his hand, and a few turns later I buried his other with dakra mystic. I cast ashiok, milled a prophet of kruphix, cast it next turn, flashed in my dictate thanks to the untap. Was able to get 3 notion thieves out and was able to draw 8 cards per turn. I cast all my demons via nykthos and was able to swing in for > 40 damage the next turn, negating his fog and last card in hand.

Overall, this deck was hilariously fun to play. Stealing cards from keranos, revelation, and urban evolution is a sight to behold.
