Deathrender, a combo concept

Modern BUG (Sultai) Combo

Brewing a combo deck for Modern, my goal is to get in Emrakul off of Deathrenders trigger.

The mana ramp creatures are great for getting out and equipping Deathrender faster, they are also great holders of the sword, Viscera Seer allows you to sac the holder at instant speed (if they are unaware you're holding Emrakul you can bring him in on your opponents end step!) to trigger and scry.

Most of the cards obviously allow you to search up your critical pieces, Emrakul, the Aeons Torn, Deathrender, and Viscera Seer. Alternatively you can use Liliana or simply attacking/blocking with the creature to kill it but this is less reliable.

R.I.P. Deathrite

Sideboard is a work in progress! Oh, so is the deck...

Love the idea! 1+ maybe take out 1 or 2 of the Emrakul, the Aeons Torn and replace it with another sac outlet or art. find because you already have quite a few things to fetch emrakul so i don't know if you need 4 of them

Could add a Sword to fetch off of Steelshaper's Gift as an alternate wincon.

Maybe Wild Cantor ? It can be used for either ramp or swordbearer.

Claws of Gix and Miren, the Moaning Well are both good sac outlets.

Is High Market Modern legal? Would be better than Miren but I don't know if it was ever reprinted.

It's not. I went through this process with my deck Mana costs, mana shmosts, and those two are the best sac outlets I found.

+1, this is the first deck I've seen besides mine to use Deathrender like this. It's a very under-used card in my opinion. I had an Eldrazi deck that would abuse Eldrazi Spawn and Mass Polymorph to get out the big guys fast. I often had Emrakul or similar by turn 3. At then end of your opponent's turn, or at any time, you can sac the Spawn without needing a sac outlet. There's an alternative tactic for you, if you ever decide to switch it up. :)

this is pretty cool +1 from me. have you considered using Growth Spasm , it'd ramp you ahead and give you a guy to either wield or to just use for more ramp.

Interesting concept. I like the idea of using Deathrender to drop Emrakul. I have a similar deck where I cheat out Emrakul with an infinite mana combo along with multiple means of tutoring for him. Check it out and see if you can get any card inspiration. Omnipotence

Great deck, interesting combos with this card.I would add some more colourless big creatures to fetch with your Ancient Stirrings (Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre or Kozilek, Butcher of Truth ). I'd also replace Serum Visions with Preordain so you don't draw something that you can't use then scry 2. Finally i'd put at least one more Steelshaper's Gift so you can get your Deathrender out more often.Aside from that +1, and make some more awesome decks.

Pretty interesting... I agree with 44hydra44

Also maybe run Elvish Piper as another way to cheat in creatures at instant speed.

I don't respond to many suggestions lol, but 4 big colorless guys was already too many, I had to cut to 3, as Ancient Stirrings allows me to get any of 3 important things, an Emrakul, a Deathrender , and sometimes just a land. You only want to draw one big Eldrazi, past that it's a dead card, you'd be better off with anything, even an off-color land. I'd love to use Preordain , however this is a Modern deck, and it is a banned card. When I had more Steelshaper's Gift It was too often a dead card, as I get Deathrender from the Stirrings as well.

Orvos101, Awakening Zone is too slow.

firerunner36, Growth Spasm is subpar, plus I only run 2 basics and those are for when I get Path to Exile d

infinitemana, Incredibly valid suggestion, but for now I'm trying for the hard combo deck approach and don't want to dilute, I fear going down that path would just end with me playing Caw-blade again lol

Deathrender is very expensive. 4 CCM and not a insta kill with a pretty bad disrupt play is very dangerous and situational.

But still, playable.

Nestalim, I you're completely right, glad somebody knows what's up around here. I wouldn't take this to a GP yet, if I wanted to combo win I'd play U/R storm, but people expect that. That deck will typically "go off" on turn 3 or 4 with a decent hand.

This deck was slow in testing so I added the ramp to get sword out on turn 3, technically turn 4 Emrakul is possible but, not consistent at all, I've been changing it slowly and hoping to have it more competitive by March. I hope to catch people off guard with the deck.

You may want more discard mainboard to deal with combo. i won in playtesting with Breaking Pandemonium.

I dig the concept! Good luck making it competitive!

What about Lotus Cobra over Sylvan Caryatid ? With your fetchlands you can easily drop the Deathrender turn 4 and even have a mana (or two) to drop something saccable.

I actually just built a deck very very similar, I figured I would look for more ideas on how to make the deck more efficient and was surprised how eerily similar the decks were. I run Mystic Snake in my sideboard. It's pretty awesome to sac a creature equipped with deathrender to a seer and then counter a spell, then sac the snake off to pop out a fatty.
