Maybeboard

You can escape everything in life, except for

Death & Taxes.

About the deck: Death and Taxes is primarily a Legacy archetype. It's typically Mono-White, but occasionally splashes Black. The deck is somewhat of a "Creature Control" deck. Half of the deck is creatures, as you can see, but they aren't just beatsticks: they're designed specifically to lock out your opponent, or otherwise ruin their game. Taxation effects, library restriction, and land denial are all ways that you can punish your opponent for being greedy with their cards.

Card Breakdown.

Aether Vial- The backbone of the deck. Keeping this on two or three counters lets you have constant board advantage. An extra creature every turn, even flashed in during your opponent's. There are endless tricks you can do with this card, and it's all for 1 grey mana.

Akroma, Angel of Fury - I know. It's Red. The deck is MonoW. HOWEVER, read more carefully- it has Morph. By paying 3 to play this bitch as a face-down 2/2, we open up the possibility of flickering it with one of the various flicker effects loaded into the deck and morphing her back up without paying the cost! The Bane of UWx Control and Midrange.

Aven Mindcensor- Greedy Modern players, beware. Even without Vial you can flash this bad bird in in response to them cracking a Fetch, and then they just have to pray to Heliod that there's a Shock sitting near the top. Equally brutal in conjunction with Path to Exile and Ghost Quarter.

Blade Splicer- This is just value on a stick. Two creatures, one of which a sizable beater, on the first cast. Repeat it with flicker effects and such in the deck for a little Golem body guard squad. As long as Babe Splicer stays on the board, your Golems can reliably trade with just about anything in Modern.

Eiganjo Castle- Our only Legend is Mangara of Corondor , but it doesn't hurt the fixing so why the hell not?

Flickerwisp- This deck's bread and butter. This card can do so much more than you would expect at first glance. Keep an eye out in the Tips & Tricks section below, he'll pop up plenty.

Ghost Quarter- Another way to punish players who get greedy with their land. With abilities that hinder library-searching, it just gets meaner and meaner.

Leonin Arbiter- One very bad kitty. You can Vial this guy in in response to opposing Fetches or tutors, or even after they allow a Path to Exile to resolve. He can easily up the value on your cards, while rendering opponent's useless.

Mangara of Corondor - At first glance, this guy looks like a poor-man's Vindicate. Upon closer inspection, however, you realize just how much potential this guy has with Stack abuse- and all because of where they put the colon. I'll discuss his uses below.

Path to Exile- It just wouldn't be Modern without everybody's favorite removal spell! It's potent even without search-hinderance, but this deck has plenty of that, too. And, in a pinch, you can Path your own creature to make up for the low land-count.

Restoration Angel- Serves many of the same purposes as Flickerwisp, but she's got a bigger butt and as Flash built in, so you don't have to rely on Vial. Unfortunately she only targets your creatures, so her use is limited, but it's still a great way to recycle your ETBs.

Soldier of the Pantheon- Efficiency personified. A 1-drop 2/1 is considerable already, but his abilities really push him from good to great. Protection from multicolor protects him from Lightning Helix, Electrolyze, and dangerous creatures like Loxodon Smiter while also preventing things like Demonic Dread from coming to fruition. All that while netting a few extra life points.

Serra Avenger - What can I say, the card is powerful. With Vial, you can sneak her in early anyway. She's big enough to throw fists with the best brawlers in Modern, and can go on the offensive and defensive safely.

Stonecloaker- More gravehate, but with an added bonus! The creature-bouncing clause can be almost as useful as flickering with Resto or Wisp. Not quite as potent, but pretty close and with it's own uses. Unlike Resto, he can save someone from a wrath, too.

Tectonic Edge- I don't need lands. You do. I will gladly sacrifice mine if it means getting rid of yours. With the hatred already coming down from GQ, it's hard for an opponent to come back from losing all these lands.

Thalia, Guardian of Thraben- The Blue Mage's nightmare. Completely destroys any type of Storm combo, as well as harshly mitigating any Control deck's strategy by pushing everything back a turn. In a deck with 32 Creatures, I don't really mind. On top of all that, her physical stats are threatening to many of Modern's meaty monsters (alliteration, woo!).

Tips and Tricks

This deck has a lot of interactions with both the opponent and yourself. I'll break down some common ones here.

-Don't forget that Aether Vial's ability is instant-speed! Something as simple as flashing in Leonin Arbiter after they crack a Fetch or you Path can be the last nail in their coffin.

- Mangara of Corondor 's colon-placement opens up a world of possibilities. Because he's exiled as part of the resolution and not the activation of his ability, you can use Stonecloaker, Flickerwisp, or Restoration Angel in response, targetting him, and just get a free Ashen Rider trigger on the opponent. Pretty goddam brutal.

-Flickerwisp can target any permanent! You can use this guy for so many different things. Untap your land or creature (essentially), reset counters on an opponent's Aether Vial, decomission an opponent's card for a whole turn (putting them back a land for a turn is cruelly effective!), transform Akroma, and so much more.

-With Aether Vial, we can survive on no lands at all! Here's a hypothetical hand:

Aether Vial
2x Ghost Quarter
Leonin Arbiter
Path to Exile
Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
Flickerwisp

Even though there are no W sources, Vial makes this not only playable, but brutal. If you vial in Leonin Arbiter on turn 3, you can crack both of those GQ's and set your opponent back extremely far, while you can keep free-casting your creatures.

Thank you!
