I love this, oh I love this so. I've been wanting to look into death and taxes for standard, so this is great to see! Unfortunately I think that it won't be as strong as we'd hope. I know from experience that cards like kambal, tend to just do 2 damage and waste a kill spell, which isn't super advantageous for 3 mana. I could be wrong though

Do we have any flickers in ixalan standard? I know we lose Eldrazi Displacer, but if we had something else to flicker it would be easy to abuse the new pirate guy

Good suggestion. Upon a quick search I have found three: Wispweaver Angel, Acrobatic Maneuver, and Angel of Condemnation. Obviously Angel of Condemnation is the best of these three and definitely worth considering a spot.

But also, I have just realized that the pirate and Tocatli Honor Guard is a pretty big nonbo so I may have to make some changes.

I love Death and Taxes, and have been trying to make one work for fun for a bit now. Some things I would change:

1.) Put Ashes of the Abhorrent in the sideboard, along with Solemnity. These cards are going to be dead draws vs most of the decks you will probably play against, unless you're playing Temur Energy, GPG, or Constrictor decks. Game 1 you might get beat, but games 2 and 3 are much better match ups. That is similar to how D&T usually plays in other game modes. Brian Coval won his GP by pretty much getting wrecked every game 1, but dominating the board game 2 and 3.

2.) Add in Rampaging Ferocidon. Recently spoiled, definitely hoses the hell out of anyone playing a vampire deck. Along with Authority of the Consuls, you could cause a swing in life every turn. Could be main boarded or sideboarded.

3.) Deadeye Tracker could be a great card in a deck like this. Not only does it serve as a sort of Relic of Progenitus, it also allows him to grow or ramp you.

4.) Angel of Condemnation and Gonti, Lord of Luxury are great cards too. You can flicker your own creatures such as Demon of Dark Schemes to -2/-2 every turn if you want to wipe the board, or you can flicker your opponent's attackers or creatures as well. Not a bad card.

Overall, I really like it! I hope it serves you well and you enjoy playing it.

I actually took out Gonti, Lord of Luxury because of its interaction with Tocatli Honor Guard, of course it would also mess with Authority of the Consuls and Rampaging Ferocidon's life gain (though it is still a good option). Another worry of mine is the mana base, hence red being only a splash but I could probably swing it with black as the splash color. I really appreciate the suggestions. Deadeye Tracker was one that I knew I wanted but couldn't find. Thanks for pointing it out.

I have changed around much of the main/side per some of the suggestions above. I think Tocatli Honor Guard is a great card, but at the moment the deck relies to heavily on etb effects. I have opted to take out Demon of Dark Schemes for now but if I find that I have trouble finishing games it will likely return.

wouldn't Dusk / Dawn fit in here better as to not wrath your own creatures well some of them at least.

Yes

Siren'a ruse spoiled. But you'd have to go into blue. Could be used for flicker effects though.

Not sure it has a place in here. It's quite similar to Acrobatic Maneuver but with a more conditional draw effect for one less Mana and I don't think there's much in blue I want. Thanks for the suggestion though! I'm really liking the way Ixalan is shaping up.

Add cycle lands/more duels

My options are Dragonskull Summit and Canyon Slough. I might add Canyon Slough. Though having searchable basics due to Field of Ruin is important I could probably replace two. Thanks for the suggestion!

Why not add some curses to your deck. I know you have a lot of four drops, but the deck seems weak to control decks. Sideboard option maybe?

Tremblayk19 says... #16

I don't think that any of the curses are worth a spot in my opinion. Ashes stops gearhulk and I've got mainboarded hand disruption, not saying control is a good matchup though.

I like the way this is looking dude!! I think the interactions between Rampaging Ferocidon and Kinjalli's Sunwing a lot to shut down both lifegain and Aggro, and i love the sheer power of Angel of Condemnation and Gonti, Lord of Luxury just stealing your opponents best cards. I'm going to build this I think.

Sweet! I'm glad you think so! Please tell me how it goes if you do build it!

I'd also take a peek at Gideon of the Trials in a spot like this. He's pretty sick but also just doubled in price.

Gideon is a middle finger to both Gishath and Glorybringer, both of witch are looking to be big

Gideon's good. Think he's a bit out of place here, but could be slotted in somewhere. What would you take out for it?

September 17, 2017 4:25 p.m.

Torment of Scarabs is really good against control decks

September 17, 2017 5:08 p.m.

Yacube says... #23

Two suggestions. Drop the Duresss. You don't want a playset in the mainboard due to the creature heavy nature of your deck, meaning it's too high variance anyway. Also I'd replace Kambal with Vengeful Rebel. Works great with Angel of Condemnation and better with the tenor of your deck in general.

September 17, 2017 5:58 p.m.

Tremblayk19 says... #24

I'm going to have to disagree and here's why: Kinjalli's Sunwing, Rampaging Ferocidon, and Harsh Mentor do a pretty good job at slowing more creature-based builds, not to mention the removal my deck has.

However, against non-creature decks is where I need additional support and maindeck duress, Kitesail Freebooter and Kambal are great options in slowing those decks down.

Thank you for your suggestions though!

Maybe you could use a Thalia, Heretic Cathar for slowing dow opponents? She does the same as the sunwing, but the first strike can come in handy
