Tropical Island —May 22, 2018

I sold a bunch of cards and bought a Tropical Island. Now the deck can play turn 1 Deathrite Shaman and hold up Daze without losing tons of life for it. And last night I took 4th place in a 21 player event at my LGS and won $55 store credit. I got pretty lucky, but it was the most fun I've had playing magic in some time.

Round 1: ANT Storm. Game 1 he kept a shaky 6 with some mana problems. He fetched into 2 basics early so I couldn't Wasteland, but then played Tropical Island so he could Abrupt Decay a Delver. Wasteland ate the Trop and I played Stoneforge Mystic. He Duressed away my Batterskull, but I eventually got another Delver of Secrets  ^Flip down and equipped it with Umezawa's Jitte. He finally found enough to combo off the turn before Delver of Secrets would kill him, but I hardcast Force of Will to counter his Dark Ritual, winning the game.

Game 2 I tried to apply early pressure but he was able to make enough mana to cast Ad Nauseam through Spell Pierce, and won.

Game 3 I dominated. He kept a 1 lander and I was able to Spell Pierce his cantrip, Wasteland the land, and then Thoughtseize to take his Brainstorm if he found another land.

Round 2 was Miracles. I rolled snake eyes for our high roll. He destroyed me game 1 with Search for Azcanta  ^Flip and Terminus. Games 2 and 3 he played basically nothing relevant. He had top-heavy hands with things like Counterbalance and Terminus and Entreat the Angels and Search for Azcanta  ^Flip, while I was able to beat down with creatures and Thoughtseize his hand apart.

Round 3 was Czech Pile. If I had seen Zealous Persecution, I would have won game 1. Despite cantripping through like half my deck, no such luck. Liliana, the Last Hope ultimate took the game for him while I sat there with 2 Knight of the Reliquary in play and 8 lands in my graveyard against his 2 Baleful Strix. Game 2 I should have won. He fetched an Island and played Ponder and shuffled. Turn 2 I Spell Pierced his Brainstorm, and indeed he was on 1 land. I proceeded to durdle for like 5 turns which gave him enough time to get back into the game. Close game in the end, but oh well.

Going into round 4 I was in 5th place overall. I got paired down, and my opponent was out of the prize run, so he decided to concede to me. We played some games anyway (he was on Grixis Delver so they were some fun games!). But my opponent win percentage was good, so I finished in 4th place and received $55 store credit. Legacy is the best format.
