It's been too long ... —July 12, 2019

So I've been going through a phase recently in which I didn't play a lot of Magic and also didn't have any money really. So I haven't posted on here for a long time ... too long and there have been a lot of sets since I last had deck building on my mind. So let's discuss the cards that I consider viable for the deck and the changes I made to it:

M20:

  • Manifold Key: At first glance I thought this thing is Voltaic Key but better because of the second ability. Then I realized it cannot target itself, which is actually very important in the case of the Rings-Monolith combo. So that's a no for the "bad impostor".
  • Mystic Forge: A very, very interesting card. I will definetly play test it and see how it does. Being able to see and manipulate the top of our library is always very good with Daretti. Also the synergy with Sensei's Divining Top is just beyond crazy. For now it replaces Chaos Wand which I found out to be too gimicky and I don't really like it.

Modern Horizons:

  • Goblin Engineer: Needs no play testing. He's an Entomb for artifacts and also a fixed version of Goblin Welder - a must play in any Daretti list. Also this guy is really good at assembling the Rings+Monolith pieces. I took Blinkmoth Urn out for it because it's just so slow and I know a card is bad, when it is as expensive as the urn and I only use it as looting fodder
  • Mox Tantalite: Since I can't afford a Mox Opal or a Mana Crypt I will take this thing into consideration. I will playtest it by cutting a Mountain at first and then look forward what to cut when I think 34 lands aren't enough..

War of the Spark:

  • Karn, the Great Creator: Oh boy, this dude has cEDH printed all over him. He has the potential be the best planeswalker you could run in a Daretti's 99. Now I don't want this to be a cEDH list. So there are two possible conditions one of which has to be met so I include him: a) I decide to lose all my friends and make this deck a nightmare to play against or b) I make a gimmicky side board so he's fun and not op. The Mycosynth Lattice lock is just too broken, with your opponents not even being able to tap their lands for mana.
  • Ugin, the Ineffable: I think he's very solid and I think he will replace Unstable Obelisk because he combines the same two elements of the Obelisk: ramp and removal and does both better in a way
  • God-Pharaoh's Statue: A mediocre stax piece which - as a 6 drop - is not worth including.
  • Karn's Bastion: Solid proliferate option, which is a good enabler for Daretti's emblem. Has been included for Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle to free me from the curse of running 18 Mountains. Of course Valakut is very good. However, WotC prints at least one good land for this deck in every other set and it got to the point where I don't want to cut any non-basics anymore.
  • Blast Zone: A mass removal that synergizes with proliferate really well. Will be tested and included for a Mountain

Ravnica Allegiance:

none

Guilds of Ravnica:

I've seen Experimental Frenzy and Runaway Steam-Kin pop up on EDHREC, but they're both not really worth discussing. The Frenzy doesn't add anything to Daretti's strategy and the Steam-Kin won't get that much +1/+1 counters with the low number of red spells this deck runs. Wand of Vertebrae is another card that caught my attention because it reminded me of Codex Shredder. But shredder is so much better providing much needed recursion for non-artifacts while not exiling itself.

Lastly I decided to include Mishra's Factory over Kher Keep because of artifact synergy.

Hi Have you tried Gonti's Aether Heart I know its no Time Sieve and I know it is also a cmc 6 artifact (which you are rightly not keen on) but a 6 mana extra turn can be very potent (i assume you can make 3 artifacts at some point :P).

I normally saved it to do something silly like crank Darreti up quickly for his ult or something silly with mirror works. I also found it was great for interrupting people who wanted to go off with extra turns like a melek deck (taking an extra turn between their first and second and try to disrupt them enough with a winters orb or something {note. not recommending winters orb due to the description})
