This is a neat little deck that focuses on curses and polotics!

Meet the Commander!

MATHAS

Mathas, the Fiend-Seeker is one of three legendary creatures that came in the commander pre-con, "Vampiric Bloodlust". The moment I saw this card, I absolutely loved it, but it never felt powerful enough to replace Edgar Markov in a traditional vampire tribal deck. But finally I have found a deck where he truely finds a home

I'm a fairly casual commander player who has a semi-regular pod of 8 rotating players. Many of the decks we build are based on trying to make something that is fun to play rather than something that is inherently powerful or competitive. If you look at some of the other decks on my account most of them are built for that purpose.
As fun as it is to play commander with my group, I've found that many of them play decks that don't ever interact with their opponents save for removal and board wipes. I, on the other hand, have always found politics to be the most entertaining part of our format. So I decided out of the blue to make a deck ENTIRELY focused on politics so that when I played it, players would have to get involved or else be trampled. My greatest prayer is that after a couple of games, my group will take politics more seriously!
Well, the basic idea of this deck is that we are a course-focused Mardu, control deck. The caveat and my favorite way to play the deck is that you never do anything without talking about it first. Every move you make should be to gain goodwill from the most players possible while focusing your efforts on one opponent at a time. You want your opponents to feel like they are benefitting or at least approving of your actions and are more helpful to them alive than dead. The only chance you have of actually winning is to survive until the endgame. The result of this playstyle is an incredibly flavorful and entertaining control deck that the player's in your pod will all enjoy!
  • EARLY: Many of the early curse cards that you will play give any player a benefit for attacking the cursed player. So, usually, the best strategy is to put all of those curses on ONE players, making it to tempting an offer to ignore for opponents to attack that player rather than you.
  • MID: After you've baited opponents into focusing on one player, you should start trying to stabilize your advantage either with cards that discourage opponents from attacking you or to build a board state. Sphere of Safety , Royal Assasin, and Marchesa's Decree are good options in the former category. Celestial Ancient and Ajani's Chosen fill out the latter.
  • LATE: After one or two of your opponents have fallen and you've passed the point where a few board-wipes have resolved, you have two real win conditions:

Number 1: Opalescence and Luminarch Ascension are pretty sneaky pieces of tech that can help you burst down one of the few remaining contenders.

Number 2: Simply overwhelm opponents with curse combos that make them truly unable to win. Starfield of Nyx can be helpful in reapplying curses that may have been attached to opponents that have already died until they can't take the heat.

This section will detail my excursions with the deck and show how it performs. Each opposing deck will be listed on a power scale of 1-5 in comparison to all the decks in our pod with an occasional note for Precon's. I do not judge my own deck's power level, so I will notate my own deck as HT, meaning "Home Team"
