In the wake of destruction, the meek shall inherit the land.
“Together, they would watch everything that was so carefully planned collapse, and they would smile at the beauty of destruction."
Markus Zusak, The Book Thief.
DECK DESIGN: Poisoning the Land
Creakwood Fever is a budget Pox deck based on
Squandered Resources. As a budget builder, I try to keep all my decks under $100, so I had to tinker a bit with it, it's a fun, albeit one-sided deck. Creakwood fever is designed to simply disrupt the opponent using discard and removal and grind down their life total.
SYNERGY: Pollution Control
The deck's namesake card is
Contamination. The most glorious thing about it, it affects ALL lands! If
Contamination resolves and your opponent isn't playing mono-black, they will be at a serious disadvantage.
The major drawback to playing Contamination is the requirement to keep stacking up dead bodies every turn in order to keep it around. Bitterblossom is the king of providing tokens for black, but I can't afford them without supplementing my income with organ donation. In it's stead I'm using Breeding Pit, a poor replacement that slows the deck down considerably due to it's upkeep cost. Creakwood Liege is the next most powerful generator to Bitterblossom but also commands a hefty price tag. Nether Spirit is another go to, as recurring creatures do a fine job of keeping the Contamination fed. Now running Reassembling Skeletons to test viability. I'm constantly wanting to upgrade this area of the deck and am open to any and all suggestions!
Now that our opponent is locked down to mono-black, how else can we keep them under control? Tragic Slip is a great form of removal, giving the nature of the deck, odds are you are already sacrificing a creature each turn. Hymn to Tourach, Raven's Crime, and Duress all directly attack the opponent's hand, while Smallpox helps keep the board clear at the same time. A first turn Dark Ritual followed by Duress & Hymn to Tourach will set most opponents back far enough resolving a Contamination should be easy.
Dakmor Salvage is an essential part of this deck that I haven't quite got ordered yet. Combining this with Raven's Crime and Syphon Life we have repeatable discard or Damage/Life Gain. Darkblast gives another form of dredge, but the deck can always make use of more ways to exploit the graveyard.
SIDEBOARD: Release the Carcinogens!
BUDGET: Recycling
I build every deck under a $100 budget, to be affordable for most casual players. While this removes many of the higher priced and sought after cards from my potential pool, it also forces me to be creative and look into a wider scope of cards. Occasionally I have a deck that exceeds this amount, either due to price inflation over time, or getting a few lucky pulls in packs that I opted to keep, and in those rare cases, I will attempt to annotate replacement options that would bring the deck back in line with this budget.
