Crazy Cat Ladies (Soul Sisters / Lifegain variant)

Modern Budget Lifegain Mono-White Soul Sisters Theme/Gimmick

I designed this deck for my wife, who loves cats. It is a variant on Soul Sisters, with more cats.

The addition of Felidar Sovereign adds a nice win condition, and with all the lifelink and life gain it should be easy enough to attain. If not, there are still the basic foundations of Soul Sisters with Soul Warden and Soul's Attendant. Ajani's Pridemate who can get out of hand in a hurry, or toss a Sunbond on any of the other creatures to make them a big threat in a hurry.

I am always open to suggestions for ways to improve the deck. If you like it, please +1 upvote it, thanks :)

I'll have to pick up a couple Brave the Elements, probably keep them in the sideboard until I know I am facing something I will need it against.

May 17, 2016 2:42 a.m.

I love the cats too, especially Ajani's Sunstriker, though I am not able to toss it into any of my decks, so yours gets a +1 from me. Also I want to suggest Serra Avatar as the ultimate Crazy Cat Lady coming in the hour of need to aid her beloved kitties in the battle. And perhaps some aura pumps as Ethereal Armor or Armored Ascension to increase the life gained by your lifelinkers and help them survive combat.

May 18, 2016 6:40 a.m.

I appreciate the suggestions. Serra Avatar is a little high on the CMC, and Armored Ascension doesn't really fit the theme I was going for. I might give Ethereal Armor a try if it turns out my kitties are getting wiped too quickly.

May 18, 2016 3:50 p.m.

Honor of the Pure might be better than sunbond for your deck. creatures can be a little more disposable and also gain more from lifelink.

May 23, 2016 10:01 p.m.

With all the life gain in this deck, Sunbond can turn even a lowly 1/1 into a powerhouse in no time. It only affects 1 creature, but gives a lot more bang for the buck when it gives 1 creature +20/+20 instead of giving a handful of creatures +1/+1.

May 23, 2016 11:35 p.m.

DEFINITELY needs 4 Chalice of Life/Chalice of Death!

I'd say swap all zarichi tigers for those.

May 24, 2016 2:12 p.m.

Chalice of Life  Flip is a definite possibility. I'll put it on the maybeboard until I am able to pick a few up.

May 24, 2016 3:44 p.m.

Maybe sideboard a Cursebreak to destroy enchantments like Tainted remedy.

May 24, 2016 3:57 p.m.

Cursebreak is a definite for the sideboard, fits in with the lifegain theme and removes something that can totally shut down the deck.

May 24, 2016 5 p.m.

Ajani Steadfast would be a great addition if you wanted to incorporate a Planeswalker.

May 31, 2016 4:05 p.m.

I suggest to sideboard something against flying like Kemba's Skyguard or Leonin Skyhunter.

May 31, 2016 4:24 p.m.

what do you think about adding in some Elixir of Immortality

June 6, 2016 1:55 a.m.

Elixir of Immortality Is nice, but I don't know what I would drop to fit it into the deck.

June 6, 2016 2:05 a.m.

hmmm id probably drop Soul Warden or Soul's Attendant for the Elixir of Immortality

June 6, 2016 2:45 a.m.

The Soul Sisters are what this entire deck is built around, dropping them would be counter-productive.

June 6, 2016 12:14 p.m.

i would personally drop the Zarichi Tiger for elixers, as the tiger wont shuffle destroyed cats back into your library for later use.

June 6, 2016 12:23 p.m.

The tigers are the first things I move when I sideboard in Brave the Elements or Cursebreak. Maybe I'll drop them for the Elixir of Immortality and just sideboard those out when I am not worried about getting milled.

June 6, 2016 1:50 p.m.

run path to exile; it has kitties on it. try running a control package to survive until you drop a felidar soveriegn ftw at 40 hp

June 26, 2016 3:37 p.m.

I was considering Path as a sideboard option. But 4 of them would more than double the price of this deck. If I ever move this deck out of the budget category Path is definitely in :)

June 26, 2016 6:26 p.m.

Do you really need 4 Felidar Sovereign? Maybe throw in a Lifelink or 2?

+1 meow

August 10, 2016 3:43 a.m.

Also, have you considered Ordeal of Heliod? The card basically reads "tap two mana and gain 10 life" with Ajani's Pridemate and/or Sunbond in play.

August 10, 2016 3:47 a.m.

Man this deck is so dumb I love it.

August 28, 2016 11:10 p.m.

Ordeal of Heliod works great with heroic cards, i'd suggest Phalanx Leader or Setessan Battle Priest it also works good with Ajani's Pridemate if it already has 3 =1/=1 counters on it, because then it's basically just gain 1o life, i'd remove the 4 Sunbound for 4 Ordeal of Heliod

Auriok Champion maybe replace one of the lifelink cats

Pious Evangel  Flip same thing

Suture Priest same thing

Terashi's Grasp replace Cursebreak

Solemn Offering same thing but it also targets artifacts

September 16, 2016 10:05 a.m.

Those are all fine cards, but they do not fit the crazy cat lady theme of the deck. If I rebuild a similar deck which is built purely for power and not to fit a theme I will definitely keep them in mind :)

September 16, 2016 8:49 p.m.

Ok, if it's one improvement, I think Brimaz, King of Oreskos has a place in this deck.

September 17, 2016 9:19 p.m.

I don't really understand what Mistveil Plains does in this deck; unless it's intended to face down against mill decks on a regular basis, it just seems like a Plains that comes into play tapped.

Whitemane Lion would provide a way to get multiple triggers out of the Soul sisters and the ability to dodge removal spells.

December 1, 2016 10:08 p.m.

Mill was pretty common in the meta locally when I built this deck, which is why I put the Mistveil Plains in there. I'll have to consider the Whitemane Lion I had not seen that one before, could work out well.

December 2, 2016 7:47 p.m.

Hello! Great deck - fun theme. I'm building a deck around some of the same cards and was wondering: for Ajani's Pridemate, what counts as an instance of life gain? For example, when a creature enters the battlefield, does Ajani's Pridemate get +1/+1 for each Soul Sister you have in play, or just one +1/+1? When your creatures with lifelink deal combat damage, does Ajani's Pridemate get +1/+1 for each of your damage-dealing lifelinked creatures, or does the exchange of combat damage only count as one instance of life gain? Thanks for you time! Love the deck +1

December 3, 2016 12:18 p.m.

Every trigger activates Ajani's Pridemate...so if you have 4 different cards which give you life in a turn, you gain +4/+4. Sunbond on the other hand is based on how much life you gain, so if you gain 3 life from 1 trigger, and 1 life from another, you would gain +4/+4 with sunbond, or +2/+2 on the Pridemate.

For real fun, enchant any creature that has Lifelink with Sunbond, then every time it attacks or defends it doubles in power/toughness...not to mention all the life you gain :)

December 3, 2016 7:10 p.m.

Hate cats but i dig this deck +1 from me

maybe Radiant Fountain instead of Kabira Crossroads?

February 5, 2017 11:14 a.m.

why not use a Ajani Goldmane ? it fits the cat theme as well as Auriok Champion both would give a bit of lifegain and Ajani's 2nd and 3rd powers would help with attacking

February 17, 2017 4:41 a.m.

I second Noku269's suggestion. I think goldmane is the best ajani for ss. I'd recommend playing a total of 2 copies tho, between the mb and sb. But that just me

February 17, 2017 8:47 a.m.

Love the deck idea and theme. Think you could make a 20$ budget variant? If you want to, of course.

March 17, 2017 10:09 p.m.

Drop all the specialty lands and sub in standard Plains, that'll drop about $15 off the price. Other than that I am not quite sure of any cheaper subs for the rest of the deck, everything else is sub $2 per card, and most are sub $.50.

March 18, 2017 4:12 a.m.

Hm. Alrighty, Danke.

March 18, 2017 7:54 p.m.

Serra Ascendant??? For some evasion and ways to block flyers.

March 26, 2017 2:18 a.m.

If I was going for a traditional Soul Sisters deck, definitely. This is a themed budget deck thought, so $65 for 4 cards isn't really right for it :)

March 26, 2017 2:01 p.m.

Stay put: there's going to be a cat-lord in Amonkhet (not yet uploaded to tappedout).

Regal Caracal

April 6, 2017 3:16 p.m.

Looks cool, mana cost might be a bit high for this deck though.

April 7, 2017 10:09 p.m.

I second the notion of the cat lord's CMC being too high. The saddest thing is that for as much as it costs, it dies to Bolt. It does also grant lifelink and creates two tokens though, so it may be worth considering at least one in the deck.

I prefer Cradle of Vitality over Sunbond if you're looking to run one. The reason being that creature removal doesn't affect the former (the 2-for-1 downfall of Auras), and it can be used to pump any creature and isn't locked to just one when cast. Though it does cost mana to activate, and that may be a deal-breaker on its own.

If nothing else, at least consider replacing Trained Caracal with the newer and better Sacred Cat when it comes out!

April 25, 2017 2:51 p.m.

Sacred Cat does look good, I'll have to pick a few of those up.

April 25, 2017 9:44 p.m.

I would suggest some removal as Path to Exile -> Budget: Condemn, Oblivion Ring or Journey to Nowhere

And some generic artifact and graveyard hate for the sideboard: Stony Silence -> Budget: Kataki, War's Wage,Rest in Peace -> Budget: Tormod's Crypt, Relic of Progenitus, Grafdigger's Cage

June 6, 2017 3:39 p.m.
June 22, 2017 12:43 a.m.

Whitemane Lion and Oketra's Monument has more potential then sunstriker and chalice. Monument's cost reduction will help if you ever want to test the new cat-lord token maker

July 4, 2017 6:46 p.m.

This may be a silly question, but why are there no Brimaz, King of Oreskos in here? Seems perfect (purrfect?) for what you're trying to achieve here.

July 25, 2017 6:26 a.m.

Because this is a budget deck, there are a ton of ways to improve this deck if you are willing to up the budget past the $50 limit I put on it.

July 25, 2017 7:36 p.m.

I'd Recomend Brimaz, King or Oreskos

August 1, 2017 3:57 p.m.
August 16, 2017 9:53 p.m.

This is a cat themed deck...hence it does not have the full Soul Sisters deck list...like Squadron Hawk

August 17, 2017 12:11 a.m.

August 17, 2017 10:36 a.m.

So, it requires's a second color splash, but Pride Sovereign seems to fit here. It's cheaper than a fair amount of your cats, is huge if you're on the offense, and makes multiple lifelink cat tokens if you're on a smaller board.
