Sideboard

Maybeboard

An Artefact-based combo deck I'm building which heavily features cards from the new Unstable set, namely Contraptions and Host Creatures. The 'sideboard' is the deck of Contraptions.

I loved the recently released Host and Augment series of creatures, in my opinion a much better successor to the two-card creature concept than Meld proved to be. Unfortunately there weren't a fantastic number to run in Dr. Julius Jumblemorph's colours without delving into the colourless groups, and Selesnya really doesn't offer the best Artefact support. Julio isn't the Commander but still makes an appearance in this deck and can be a real bomb when he hits the field.

I went with Atraxa, Praetors' Voice for the colours and some good synergies, though it does make me feel a little dirty. Nearly all of my mana base uses counters and requires some time to get going, though I'm usually super set for mana from mid- to late-game. A number of creatures work with +1/+1 counters in this deck, and a couple of others (Enclave Cryptologist, Yisan, the Wanderer Bard) work with their own counters and synergise with By Gnome Means and Everythingamajig A, but the counters are mostly there for mana support. I didn't really want to go down the typical 'everything with counters' and superfriends crap that every Atraxa player does ever.

A lot of my deck centres around sacrificing Artefacts and Artefact Creatures for combos or general benefit of the deck. A number of sacrifice outlets are in the deck like Aerial Toastmaster, Blasting Station, Kuldotha Forgemaster and the aforementioned By Gnome Means. If I find I've got an Artefact that's expended its usefulness (or that I can just reanimate) then I'm able to sacrifice it, and if I can first animate the noncreature ones with Karn, Silver Golem or Sydri, Galvanic Genius then that's all the better, triggering Dictate of Erebos, Grave Pact, Monkey- and enabling Arcum Dagsson.

There're also a few Contraptions which turn nonartefact Creatures into Artefacts (Applied Aeronautics, Duplication Device, Optical Optimizer, Tread Mill). It's again useful if I need to sacrifice an Artefact, but can also be used as spot removal on opponents' creatures in conjunction with First Pick or Sundering Fork (or perhaps even Arcum Dagsson in a pinch).

There are some great tutors in the deck such as Arcum Dagsson, Artificer's Intuition, Clever Combo, Do-It-Yourself Seraph, Dr. Julius Jumblemorph, Kuldotha Forgemaster, Teacher's Pet, Yisan, the Wanderer Bard. Considering a number of the tutors specify to search for an Artefact, having Mycosynth Lattice on the field (or putting its text box onto Do-It-Yourself Seraph) is a lovely position to be in.

Artificer's Intuition, Hypnotic Swirly Disc, Numbing Jellyfish can fill up your graveyard while Auriok Salvagers, Dr. Julius Jumblemorph, Junk Diver, Labro Bot, Lackey Recycler, Myr Retriever, Refibrillator, Salvaging Station, Scrap Trawler, Workshop Assistant can reanimate things.

And finally, here are some neat combo pieces that can help gain a huge advantage or potentially win the game: Blasting Station, Clock of DOOOOOOOOOOOOM!, Dross Scorpion, Eager Beaver, Flayer Husk, Half-Squirrel, Half-, Monkey-, Salvaging Station.

Whew. I'm done now. Seeya!
