Maybeboard

This is my version of a Braids and fatty friends deck. I elected to go with mostly all sea monsters instead of using Eldrazi. I wanted to give the 'ol girl a whirl and try beating everyone down with these blubbery beasts. Ironically, there is only one whale on the list. I kept whittling down the sea monsters as to maximize ETB and balance the deck out.

Let me start with saying that this deck would be stronger with Eldrazi, artifacts creatures, and other big blue behemoths. Annihilator, coupled with theft, would absolutely turns things to our favor. There are plenty of options out there, many of which are well under $1. I was dead set on making this a sea monster themed deck though, but feel free to play around!

Aside from keeping up with a sea monster theme I wanted the fatties to have a worthwhile ETB effect or built in evasion. Great Whale and Memnarch are on the hard maybe list.
Since we're giving Braid triggers to everyone else, we might as well try and profit from this too! When I first built this deck I did so without any steal effects. I quickly realized how dumb that was. Magus of the Unseen and Sower of Temptation are the stealers, everything else is a clone effect. Clone , Cryptoplasm , Stunt Double and more work great to get some awesome and unique creatures that your opponents are cheating into play. These creatures help prevent us getting stuck with only a bunch of high CMC sea monster fatties.
  1. Clone
  2. Cryptoplasm
  3. Mirage Mirror
  4. Sower of Temptation
  5. Stunt Double
  6. Vesuvan Shapeshifter
  7. Vizier of Many Faces
  • Vanishing allows only us to benefit from Braids. We have to float , but that shouldn't be too much of an issue.
  • Crawlspace and Propaganda force our opponents to pay-to-play.
  • Swiftfoot Boots : simple commander protection
  • Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir : because fatties with flash is fun for all! Also, some nice protection.
  • Fatespinner : More beneficial as the game progresses, but a useful way to hamper opponents.
  • I added two counterspells with the possible intention of adding 1-2 more.
Nothing earth-shattering here. Crystal Shard can be used with our own creatures to abuse ETB effects. Glaring Spotlight allows us to target permanents with hexproof/shroud. NO ONE IS SAFE!
I recently added Azami, Lady of Scrolls and a few others wizards to bring in some nice card draw. I never throw Braids, Conjurer Adept into combat and this is a great way to utilize her. Mystic Remora and Nezahal, Primal Tide provide some steady card draw. The rest are instant speed draw spells, Pull from Tomorrow is the last of the big burst spells that I use to run. I like having it if I've got mana to burn.

I don't have a Mana Crypt or Mana Vault , but if you got 'em, use 'em. I think a good mix of low and high CMC artifacts work well in the deck, as you can cheat in the higher CMC artifacts. Using Braids to drop in artifacts, or even lands, helps set you up for the mid/late game and keeps you from looking overly threatening.

It is certainly not a revolutionary concept that I'm putting out here, but I wanted to try something new, and keep it on the budget side of things. It could use some improvements, for sure, but it is fun to play and holds its own in a causal group. You can certainly play this to be more aggressive with the big Eldrazi creatures and Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur . I opted to stay away from those to keep the deck more casual and to not be immediately hated to death.

The deck has lots of room for improvement. As I mentioned, my goal was to keep the price down, but non-budget upgrades will certainly help this deck out. I would strongly suggest checking out DJ's Braid deck here - Braids, Commander Adept. I changed up my deck after watching the Command Zone deck tech Braids video.
