Competitive Scion of the Ur-Dragon

Dragons are big, flying creatures with amazing abilities. However, if you've ever built a deck with dragons, you've probably noticed that they take a lot to cast. Because of this, many dragon-tribal decks are slow, and built for casual games.

If you're content with casual games, then dragons work fantastic. But if you've ever wondered how to build a competitive dragon deck, you've come to the right spot. Thus begs the question, "How can I build a cEDH deck built around dragons?" There's lots of different answers (hints on where to get started down below), but at the end of the day, I found what I was looking for in Scion of the Ur-Dragon.

  1. Korvold, Fae-Cursed King
  2. Niv-Mizzet, Parun
  3. Niv-Mizzet Reborn
  4. Prossh, Skyraider of Kher
  5. Ramos, Dragon Engine
  6. Scion of the Ur-Dragon
Dragons have very powerful and unique abilities. Many of those abilities combo with other cards to give you infinite combat phases, lethal amounts of commander damage, infect damage, or just sheer damage in general. Here's why Scion is competitive:

You fill your deck with cards that have deadly combos with certain dragons. As soon as you play one of those combo cards, you can use Scion of the Ur-Dragon 's ability to change himself into the specific dragon that combos with that specific card to cause a game-winning combo

Scion is a toolbox with a variety of different dragons at his disposal. I break down the dragons in Scion into two main categories:

Protection dragons are fairly self explanatory. They are used to protect Scion from removal. Because this deck revolves on having your commander to do win, it's going to be one of, if not the highest priority targets for removal. Thankfully, all you really need is floating. (And with a deck that's more than 50% lands/ramp, there's no real challenge there)

  1. Silumgar, the Drifting Death . Let's say that Scion of the Ur-Dragon is targeted by a spell like Terminate . Before terminate resolves and kills Scion, you can activate his activated ability at instant speed to turn him into a dragon with hexproof. Scion will turn into Silumgar in response, Terminate will fizzle, and Scion stays on the battlefield

  2. Quicksilver Dragon is a dragon that, while not hexproof, can redirect Terminate targeted at Scion to a different target... maybe an opposing commander, for instance.

  3. Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon . This is a last resort protection, and this is NOT the main purpose of this dragon in the deck. This is only for a worst case scenario, if Scion of the Ur-Dragon is going to die from removal and there are no other means of protection, you can activate Scion's ability and pay Skithiryx's cost to regenerate itself before it dies from the removal.

Some other notable protection dragons:

  1. Shimmer Dragon .
  2. Belltoll Dragon .
  3. Dragonlord Ojutai .
  4. Palladia-Mors, the Ruiner .
Dragons have many game-winning combos. If we draw into a card like Curiosity , we can enchant Scion for , activate scions ability by paying and transforming scion into Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind . Curiosity says, "When you deal damage, draw a card". Niv-Mizzet says, "When you draw a card, deal 1 damage". Thus, creating a combo to deal X damage to any targets, where X is the cards in your deck.

The combo cards for Niv-Mizzet are:

  1. Curiosity .
  2. Keen Sense .
  3. Tandem Lookout .

Another infamous combo is with Animate Dead + Worldgorger Dragon . This combo is a little bit more complicated, but the basic idea is that we are able to generate infinite mana with this combo. All we have to do is turn Scion into Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius to deal infinite damage. The cards that combo with Worldgorger Dragon are:

  1. Animate Dead .
  2. Dance of the Dead .
  3. Necromancy .

The most well known combo with Scion involves Moltensteel Dragon + Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon . This combo requires paying to activate Scions ability twice. First, you turn Scion into Moltensteel Dragon, and you pay 12 life to give your commander +6/+6. Then scion turns into Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon as an 11/11 dragon with flying and lethal infect damage. This combo is great because you don't a combo card so long as both dragons are in your library.
