The base concept of Unlikely Alliances is proposing a flavorful "what-if" team-up and transferring it into the sweet, spicy commander gameplay we all know and love! Unlikely Alliances can serve as a flavorful replacement for partner, or if you're interested in having (hypothetically) up to four different commanders, you could (hypothetically) play the rules in tandem! I prefer the first, myself, but hey, if you wanna get wacky, that could be pretty wacky!

Rules for pairing are twofold-

1: Partners must hail from the same home plane. Regarding planeswalker commanders, I restrict them to their home plane for gameplay reasons, but if you'd rather, you can certainly allow them to roam the multiverse.

2: Partners must share all colors in their identity but one, unless one of them is monocolor, in which case it must share its one color with the other commander, or unless one of them is colorless, in which case go wild. If both commanders are monocolor, they can be any color you like.

Examples (which are all gonna be from Alara because it's the most underrated plane in the multiverse, and yes, this IS the lore hill I choose to die on!!):

Kess, Dissident Mage can be paired with Sen Triplets because they're both from Alara, and share all their colors but one (White and Red, respectively). When partnered, their collective identity would be WUBR (probably better known as non-G). To gain the same color combination, either partner could be paired instead with Breya, Etherium Shaper, as she, too, adds only White to Kess and only Red to Sen Triplets.

Kess, Dissident Mage could also be partnered with Malfegor, as Malfegor shares all its colors with Kess, and Kess adds only U to Malfegor's identity. One could also be pair her with Armix, Filigree Thrasher, as Armix shares Black with Kess and is monocolor.

Kess, Dissident Mage could not be paired with Olivia, Mobilized for War, Chromium, the Mutable, or Fblthp, the Lost, because while her color identity is compatible with theirs, they don't share a home plane with Kess.

Meren of Clan Nel Toth could be paired with such legends as Kresh the Bloodbraided, Malfegor, or Armix, Filigree Thrasher because each of them adds no more than one color to Meren's identity and all share Black, but Meren could not be paired with Jenara, Asura of War or Breya, Etherium Shaper because both would add two or more colors to her identity, and she could not be paired with Emrakul, the Promised End or Thrun, the Last Troll because the two do not share a home plane.

To quickly take a journey elsewhere, you could pair any Zendikari commander (let's say, Bruse Tarl, Boorish Herder) with Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger, because Ulamog is colorless and therefore a wild card!

Tuktuk the Explorer could be paired with Thada Adel, Acquisitor or Taborax, Hope's Demise because they're all monocolor. He could be paired with Tazri, Beacon of Unity or Omnath, Locus of Creation because they've both got Red and Tuktuk's monocolor. He could not be paired with Orah, Skyclave Hierophant or Yarok, the Desecrated because neither of them share Red with Tuktuk.

Omnath, Locus of Creation could be paired with Omnath, Locus of the Roil or card:Tazri, Beacon of Hope but not Omnath, Locus of Rage or card:Zagras, Theif of Hearteats. I think by now we get it, if we didn't get it months ago.
