Clear the Field! (Athreos)

Commander / EDH

RealMTGKnifer

This is a deck I've wanted to create for a while. EDH is very much a pick and choose format of MTG. You have to be diplomatic. But this deck allows you to be aggressive with very little drawback. It combines two of my favorite elements of magic: good stuff decks and group slug.

The main focus is indestructibility on your side combined with as many spells that "destroy all creatures" as possible (I call them Napalm Spells). The focus is on the phrase "destroy all" because it gets around specific hexproof/shroud your opponents' creatures may have. I'm running 15 cards that can be used to clear the field. Arcane Lighthouse can help with that too.

For creatures that have indestructibility, we're focusing on exiling them. 12 cards can exile one or more creatures. These are good for spot removal as well if I'm not drawing into my napalm cards. In the rare case they have both, I run Consuming Vapors and Chainer's Edict to force a sacrifice. If your opponent has hexproof and has a hexproof, indestructible creature, you're probably toast anyway.

I want to be able to get to these cards and play them quickly, so some card draw and mana ramp is included as well. If my opponent is playing removal, I fall to my planeswalkers to make magic happen.

Finally, with all of this creature hate, I want to get some advantage from it somehow. Liliana Vess can be a win condition, and Fated Return helps me steal something gamebreaking from an opponent (thinking of my local meta, that could be a Sheoldred, Whispering One, Master of Cruelties, Sage of Hours, or Archfiend of Depravity).

There are several win conditions in this deck. A Catastrophe that destroys all lands combined with any napalm spell usually will be a win considering how many mana generators I have. Liliana Vess, Colossus of Akros, or Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre can win games by themselves. Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger and Lord of the Void can attack life gain decks effectively as well as dredge, reanimation, and heavy token generation decks. Sorin, Grim Nemesis is one of my personal favorites against life gain decks and is also the only planeswalker hate in the deck. Athreos, God of Passage can win with commander damage if you keep the devotion up.

This deck is weak to artifact-based strategies, but otherwise playtests fairly consistently. Hope you enjoy it!
