Classic Soul Sisters

Modern Aggro Lifegain Mono-White

Sideboard

A classic take on Soul Sisters.

WIN CONDITIONS

1) Gain 30 life, send the enemy to the afterlife with Serra Ascendant.

2) Get an Ajani's Pridemate out early, buff it till it gets stronger than Simba. Swing for the win, but remember who you are.

3) Aggro off with Spectral Procession and assorted white weenies buffed with Honor of the Pure.

OTHER NOTEWORTHY CARDS

1) Path to Exile - All round utility goodness.

2) Cavern of Souls - Great against control decks. If you play it smart, this provides enough of an advantage to win.

3) Squadron Hawk - Good all round beater. Good when you need to refill your hand for Martyr of Sands, great for sustained aggro against control and their board wipes.

4) Mistveil Plains - Awesome recursion with Squadron Hawk. Tap the Mistveil Plains to put that Squadron Hawk from your graveyard to the bottom of your library, then play the one in your hand to search it out.

OPTIONS CONSIDERED

1) Phyrexian Metamorph - Leonin Relic-Warder Combo. However: i) Too difficult to assemble the combo, ii) Each individual piece of the combo was usually a dead card in hand.

2) Proclamation of Rebirth to provide recursion for Martyr of Sands. Once again, chose not to do this because the only card that benefits from this is Serra Ascendant. An option would be to replace Honor of the Pure and Spectral Procession with Chalice of Life   and [[Divinity of Pride], but I wanted to keep the aggro strategy intact so this deck could compete with fast aggro decks like Zoo or Merfolk.

3) Sunbond, Cradle of Vitality and Ordeal of Heliod, splashing green for Ageless Entity. This proved too slow.

4) Splash red for Norin the Wary and Champion of the Parish. I found this deck too unstable as it depended heavily on the opening hand, folded to early removal of the Champion, and mulliganed badly.

Took this deck to 3-0-0 at a modern tourney at my LGS recently.

Breakdown of matches played:

Match 1: Mono Red Burn, 2-0

Game 1: Drew a good hand with 2 Soul Sisters and an Ajani's Pridemate. Dropped a Honor of the Pure to pump the Pridemate to 4/4 before my opponent could bolt it, and eventually won with Spectral Procession tokens.

Game 2: Kept a risky hand with no Soul Sisters, a Serra Ascendant, Honor of the Pure and a pair of Squadron Hawks. My opponent got off to a very quick start, landing a Goblin Guide on turn 1 and then another 2 on turn 2. Was down to 5 life, but topdecked a Martyr of Sands, sacced it and went back up to 20 life, after which the Squadron Hawks did their job.

Match 2: Genesis Wave, 2-0

Game 1: Drew a hand with 2 Honor of the Pure. Opponent got off to a slow start. Curved off nicely with Serra Ascendant into Honor of the Pure, and then Martyr of Sands and a second Honor of the Pure. Managed to play 2 more Honor of the Pure and cast Spectral Procession before opponent conceded.

Game 2: My opponent got off to a quick start, dropping 2 Arbor Elves and a Utopia Sprawl. Was staring down a Vengevine and Strangleroot Geist by turn 3 with a 3/3 Ajani's Pridemate and Soul Warden on the board. Managed to Ghost Quarter the Utopia Sprawled land, and in subsequent turns play another Soul Warden, drop another Ajani's Pridemate and then a final Soul Warden to pump the original Pridemate to a 8/8. Knocked out his creatures with my Pridemates. My opponent Genesis Waved for 5, drew a Utopia Sprawl, 3 lands, and another Genesis Wave before conceding.

Match 3: Fishmill, 2-0

Game 1: Opponent dropped a Judge of Currents on turn 2. Path to Exiled the Judge, then aggroed off early on with Suture Priest into Ajani's Pridemate into Spectral Procession.

Game 2: Drew the god hand for this deck, with one Martyr of Sands and a Serra Ascendant. Managed to get the Serra Ascendant out and activated by turn 2, but my opponent managed to drop a Intruder Alarm. Drew into a Squadron Hawk which allowed me to fill my hand, and played one Squadron Hawk per turn to untap the Serra Ascendant every time.
