The Shawshank Redemption

Commander / EDH* BUG (Sultai)

Vinman

Sideboard

Maybeboard

As with all of my EDH decks, this deck's name is named after one of my favorite films that really embody the deck's theme (which in this case is a political style with a greedy component). Tasigur, the Golden Fang and now in it's current iteration Sidisi, Brood Tyrant is my first EDH deck to contain black, really revolves around the Sultai persona which is to tempt and sway others into doing your bidding by any means necessary so that you can attain your goal. This version of Sidisi, is not a super competitive version, but it has a high synergy component by drawing cards, giving your opponents the illusion of choice, controlling the board, while dumping creatures into your graveyard to either hit your win condition of Living Death or Rise of the Dark Realms. Since I am not, currently, running any counter spells, spells like Eternal Witness, Seasons Past, Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord and Laboratory Maniac give me other ways to either reset and try to hit the win conditions again or just win with Laboratory Maniac by drawing out my deck or sacrificing my creatures to Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord. So the deck has evolved from just being a "Good Stuff" deck, to more of a political deck with a recursion and graveyard manipulation style.

Given how long my play group has been playing EDH, we wanted to shake up our meta and try something new. We are testing out playing with cards from the EDH Banlist. While I know there are plenty of super broken combos I could do within my colors, especially with the cards I am choosing to play with, I just mainly want to play with the cards more than just breaking the game and comboing off. The cards listed in the sideboard are the ones I will swap into the deck to play with, and they all fit within the deck as far as theme and style.

These will be the swaps I will make in order to play with the banned cards

Griselbrand ----> Izoni, Thousand-Eyed

Leovold, Emissary of Trest ----> Jace's Archivist

Updates Add

After I made massive changes with Shadows Over Innistrad Update a few months ago, the deck has run much more smoothly. Much more synergistic instead of just raw power and "good stuff."

Cut ----> Replacement: Reason

Traverse the Ulvenwald ----> Splendid Reclamation: I originally had Farseek in this slot, but the one ramp card wasn't enough, and once I saw Traverse the Ulvenwald I thought the guaranteed delirium trigger would be amazing and grab whatever I needed. However, this was not the case. Most of the time this was just a dead card. Since I have really no ramp in the deck, and most of the time lands hit my graveyard with how much I dredge, Splendid Reclamation is just an auto include. I normally hit 4-5 lands easily, but with how much I put cards in the graveyard, getting past 5 lands can be tough. Splendid Reclamation, in theory, should be a huge advantage of ramp for me, and I can even hit my fetch lands a second time through. I'm very optimistic this card will be an all star.

Lightning Greaves (to sideboard) ----> Eternal Scourge: Haste is not too important in this deck, along with protecting a creature because most of the time I don't mind my creatures going to the graveyard. Eternal Scourge becomes another Torrent Elemental and Misthollow Griffin where I can just delve it away for my general and Dig Through Time. This is more of a trial card, and seeing how it works. If it doesn't work out well, I'll just put Lightning Greaves back in. If it's better than I thought, I'll leave it in and even swap Shriekmaw back for Murderous Cut. Again, just a trial.

Bonded Fetch ----> Fortune's Favor: Bonded Fetch had replaced Monastery Siege because it was a creature that did the same thing. However, I originally wanted Gifts Ungiven for this spot, but it's sadly banned in EDH. Now that there's another iteration of Fact or Fiction, I'm happy to have Fortune's Favor in this spot. Plus it's more politics and more player to player interaction that makes EDH great.

Island ----> Geier Reach Sanitarium: I like the card selection that comes with draw+discard mechanics. I like the selection. So Geier Reach Sanitarium fills this spot nicely. I never have a problem with getting colors I need, so adding a unique utility land that helps me, and is a nuisance for my opponents is nice.
