17th EDH Deck - Esper Second Sun Control


Introduction

I'm the guy who loves playing decks that aren't that popular and will spends thousands of dollars refining them until I deem them complete, yes I am that type of person. I been introduced to Magic the Gathering back in middle school in the year of 2003, the block that I started in was the Kamigawa block and I found it very interesting. During that time I played a constructed deck on and off and eventually life happened and I stopped playing, flash forward almost exactly ten years later and I joined an anime/otaku club. Here I met people playing MTG and I also started getting back into it. Currently I am an avid competitive EDH player who has a tendency to play combo/control decks, I absolutely hate to lose but I enjoy a great match. I've been known in my group as always being threatening and able to win out of the blue so they love to make my life hard and deny me all of my resources, as you will see the reason a lot of my decks are built to win either with flair or questionable commanders. Now enough about me, go read further below that's what you actually came here for!

Esper builds really takes me back quite a bit, I actually switched through quite a bit of commanders while finally staying to this current one. Originally this deck was my Dromar, the Banisher built from the scraps of my Vela the Night-Clad , in the inception of the deck from the far beginning it was my combo deck abusing ETB triggers and using tutors to get the pieces. Due to some events I had to disassemble the deck in early January 2016, the pieces went to my Sen Triplets deck and now once again it got rebuilt into Dromar. After awhile when core 2019 came out, I saw Chromium and fell in love with him. Now with Chromium at the helm I did a complete revamp and turned it to a pure esper control with the main win-con being Approach of the Second Sun . I haven't seen a esper EDH deck pull this off to the levels I wanted it so now here is my version of it. With that being said I present to you Chromium, the Forsakened One!!!


How to Play


The main point of our deck is essentially:

To do this we have quite a few ways to get there:

  1. Cheat our way to winning by using Academy Rector + Flash , using Rector we tutor for Omniscience which than allows us to play our spells from our hand for free. Using a tutor we grab Enter the Infinite to access our whole deck. Cast Approach of the Second Sun and using cantrips we draw AotSS again and recast AotSS, having our counterspells for protection. Win.
  2. Short cutting via Demonic Consultation , requires 7 mana and a land in hand. Cast AotSS, upkeep cast Demonic Consultation calling AotSS, exile top 6, draw AotSS and draw step card. Cast AotSS and Win.
  3. Control the board state and stalling until you can cast AotSS and waiting enough turns until you redraw AotSS and casting again with protection as backup.

Playing Chromium is challenging, as you are required to have quite a bit of knowledge of the decks you are playing against. Yes we are a draw go type of deck, but at the same time our resources and counters are finite, we are the type of deck that plays on your opponents turn. You don't have to counter every single threat on the board, at times you can just negotiate or let the other players handle the threat, since we have minimal board presence we can relax and chill and when the situation calls for it, than we intervene. Threat assessment is key and timing is also essential, knowing when to drop down certain pieces and what to tutor for can mean a difference in winning and losing the game. If it gets to late game, we are essentially the player in the best position, and at that time we should be winning. That doesn't mean we can't get the fast win either having access to Flash Rector means we can be a threat at any time, it's knowing when we can pull it off.

You want to start the game off with assembling a draw engine. Using a tutor in hand for a Phyrexian Arena is often the right choice as usually they don't tend to blow it up when you play it, if you are extremely low on cards Necropotence is probably the better target to grab as the burst refill is ideal. Rhystic Study draws more hate but it also slows them down more. You do not want to miss a land drop at all, we are fine once we reach 6 lands, but it is important to not miss a land drop.

This is where we are starting to assemble our win-con, with the access to tutors we should be able to assemble the combo pieces fairly quick. Grabbing the two essential cards to our combo Flash and Academy Rector as well as having protection for when we cast them. At this stage of the game though we need to look out for players threatening to win the game or players who have a ridiculous board state, play the role of being a peacekeeper while assembling your pieces. The longer you drag out the game, the higher your chances of winning will be.

This is nearly identical to mid game state for us, the only difference is that we have access to more resources. At this point you should have already assemble your win-con and be waiting for the perfect time to combo out, Silence is a amazing card to protect yourself. If the game drags out further or if Rector has been Praetor's Grasp or exiled, hard cast Omniscience to win. In the case of Approach of the Second Sun being exiled we do have an alternate win condition, that being Nexus of Fate in conjunction with Omniscience and Enter the Infinite. Our last resort is controlling the game while beating down people with Chromium.
