The reason for the creation of the 4-of maximum rule for cards other than basic lands, as well as the restriction of Black Lotus and Channel on Vintage and their outright banning on Legacy.

Quite often they talk about the variant with a Mountain, in which it provides a single Red mana, making you pay 19 lives instead of 17 (leaving you with 3 points of life instead of just 1) this method has. Still vulnerable to Lightning Bolt if you do not start the game.
