A new competitive Dawn... —Sept. 23, 2018

Hello beloved (c)EDH players, Sisay admirers and loyal followers!

It has been a serious while since I have been on the Weatherlight, sailing this competitive ship to glory. Many sets have passed without any updates on this vessel. Time was a factor, together with some other EDH projects that were running along. But the wait is finally over....

I took control over Captain Sisay again and plan to Board the Weatherlight once again for many great competitive adventures that lay ahead. I made some serious changes to her crew and her tools. Basically her whole cargohull has been checked and upgraded with nifty new goods. I might have to set sail for several great adventures to fully understand the effects of all the changes. Ofcource I am also looking at you, as you might have some great ideas and experiences as well!

While her setup has totally changed, so did I rewrite the primer to reflect all these changes. It may still carry some outdated sections or missing interactions. If you spot any, please inform this captain! I will change them accordingy. Aye!

Last but never least, I would like to thank all devoted people who guided me along this long journey. A journey that is still taking place and will carry on in the future. To all members that posted here during the last year; thank you for your contributions! I have seen them all and took them into consideration.

Keep up the good work lBahamutZeRO, enpc, keen_the_crazy, Worx, Gleeock, Jafjaf5, Calebthelion, Daedalus19876, Jmax13, user:chadsansing, Seal2007, Chiberia, OptimalGreen, Patolea, ItsRuben, CrimsonWings3689, arvarnargul and KR4N1X ..... and all the ones I didn't mention!

Let's set sail to unexplored new competitive territory!

Perhaps try adding in Living Plane for the combo with Elesh Norn? I know it can't be tutored with Sisay but it's much cheaper and ultimately devastating to the entire board for 4 mana instead of the 6 with Kamahl (keeping him in is good though)

I second jiminy_macca, Living Plane is a great combo piece and provides some decent protection from boardwipes as almost no one wants to be blowing their own lands.

Personally I'm not really feeling any love for Crovax, Ascendant Hero. He just feels like a dead card except of one niche combo. And what's more than that, outside of combo he kills all your own dorks.

If you're primarily using Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre as a reshuffler, I still say that Kozilek, Butcher of Truth is a better engine. Plus it's card advantage and you can get the same kind of loops going using Aetherflux Reservoir, Miren, the Moaning Well and Voyaging Satyr (yes, I get that it's more cards, but overall less dead cards). That or find a slot for Cloudstone Curio which I think will do more work overall.

I have also been eyeing off Scryb Ranger as a potential Sisay piece. Seems really strong.

I'm not sure why so many people prefer Living Plane + Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite, In terms of CMC/mana saved + smash activated abilities (bye-bye Breya) I use Linvala, Keeper of Silence instead of Elesh.... Make no mistake I also use Elesh in my deck & sometimes as the 2nd 1/2 of that combo, but generally only a select few strategy or ramp artifacts can deal with that linvala + plane combo once it is out.

With the new Legendary rule for planeswalkers, are there any G/W/GW Planewalkers you'll be adding to this deck since you can now tutor them out?

Gleeock says... #8

Did that errata actually happen?

Yes

It seems that all planeswalkers (past and present) get the legendary type added. For cEdh purposes in an aggro/storm deck like this one it has little to no impact. The combo lines that are already available to us do not improve of become faster because of planeswalker options. Perhaps Garruk Wildspeaker could be interesting, but it would not speed up the wincons we currently run. Stax builds might benefit from it more. If your meta asks for mass removal, which in cEDH is usually too slow, then Elspeth, Sun's Champion could be of help. But again, this is not something cEdh builds should desire.

@PartyJ I agree with the PWs not really being of use in this. The only one I can see being useful is Karn Liberated to swap out for Mangara of Corondor since it would be a reuseable effect instead of one-and-done. Besides, Karn adds to the Weatherlight Crew flavor!

The Bow of Nylea + Blasting Station combo is definitely strong but I am curious why you chose this option vs Crovax, Ascendant Hero + Aetherflux Reservoir combo when you also run Rest in Peace (which will potentially shut down Bow-Station). Would like to hear your reasons regarding this change.

You have one other combo line in the deck that you haven't mentioned - Paradox Engine + Selvala, Explorer Returned + Green Sun's Zenith.

Once you have drawn all the cards in your deck, yo ucan continually play GSZ, failing to find, which untaps Selvala and gives you a card to draw. This combo lets you deck out your opponents.

@enpc This combo was already mentioned. See above primer under "Finishing Lines".

after going through the decklist I noticed 2 cards that seemed out of place. that would be nazahn, revered blacksmith and Mirri, Weatherlight Duelist nazahn only has a single artifact to fetch which means after that he no longer has a purpose replacing him with another card to protect sisay would greatly improve its function. the same stands for mirri you could replace her with Crawlspace as an example or even Silent Arbiter

September 9, 2017 3:08 p.m.

Worx says... #18

TwistdGod Firstly Nazahn, Revered Bladesmith... this is a legendary GW creature that can be played as Flash (Via Yeva, Nature's Herald) and tutors a win condition - Umbral Mantle or even Lightning Greaves. It only has to have that one condition :)

Captain Sisay is quite protected as it is.

Secondly Mirri, Weatherlight Duelist is again a tutorable control card that can be flashed in via Yeva. How are we to get Crawlspace or Silent Arbiter?

Gleeock says... #19

Hey there,

I'm not arguing...I've been thinking of those additions myself, Nazahn has many fun avenues of 2nd tier tutoring to dream up.

Just wondering what win-con searching those artifacts creates? is it the 2nd part to a 2 part con? If you could quick update me on the exact combo I'd appreciate it.

Worx says... #20

Nazahn, Revered Bladesmith tutors for Umbral Mantle.... with Selvala, Heart of the Wilds you have infinite mana to bring out every legendary via Captain Sisay, to win with infinite creatures of Oketra the True, kill with Walking Ballista etc

September 10, 2017 6:22 p.m.

Gleeock says... #21

Gotcha... There are many ways to blitz out infinite mana with Selvala (as long as she is already out or hasted), but I do agree that this is one of the more accessible combos out there.

I may have to mull that one over, I originally wasn't too thrilled with my Umbral Mantle performance, but being able to search up Umbral Mantle could change the story, especially considering he nets 4 mana any color for Selvala. 7 mana - (6 for Nazahn, Revered Bladesmith & one leftover for Selvala) is pretty attainable in Sisay for sure.

I love the deck and it seems really consistent. I can't find an easy way to win against it. My only problem is the $2,600 price tag, but everyone likes thier foils! I would get the layman's version though. That altered art looks great! How was it made?

How come your not running Instill Energy and Concordant Crossroads? Also if your running paradox engine you should be able to go infinite on turn 3 to 4. So there's no need for high end creatures like avacyn and ulamog. You are also missing boreal druid, he's another 1 drop that taps for mana. Also Hokori, the Dust Drinker is cheaper than kamahl and elesh. He would potentially shut down your opponent(s) Not sure why a lot of captain sisay decks don't run mindslaver, I personally love the card in 1v1 or multiplayer because it can turn the tide big time. Also with mistveil plains you can infinite mindslaver someone. Yomiji, who bars the way is also another fantastic add with yosei, the morning star and a sacrifice outlet like your blasting station and miren. Saffi the eriksdotter should be in every captain deck to for the cheap legend drop and good ability. Otherwise I like the deck and think you are on the right track.

Nice deck! I would suggest Living Plane to combo with your Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite and your Linvala, Keeper of Silence. Also, a fun way to put it in play is Academy Rector. It also fetches a few of your other utility cards.

September 29, 2017 11:52 a.m.

Calebthelion says... #25

TCat769 I agree, Living Plane should be an auto include if you have one lying around. Academy Rector is also a good addition and then toss in Eldritch Evolution, a successfully cast evolution on rector should win you the game by grabbing Linvala and living plane.
