Release of SOI: Sisay deck updates... —April 10, 2016

It has been a while since some changes have been made. With the official release of 'Shadows of Innistrad' the following changes have been made for a next extensive round of playtests.

OUT:

IN:

  • Drownyard Temple : I want to test this. Has potential with landfall and sac cards
  • Sigarda, Heron's Grace : Powerhouse! Protection for Sisay and a token generator to fuel my Cradle with dead graveyard cards

ADDED TO SIDEBOARD:

Time for more playtesting. I updated my maybeboard with a few new cards that have been mentioned by T/O users, which I am truely grateful for. I would love your few cents about them.

A special thanks goes to enpc, aznb01777, Rinsewind, Perfect_Phyrexia, Daedalus19876, RupertPhd, user:illumfolly for all the meanful comments and discussion you brought to this place!

  • Comments have been archived under this update, the list became long...

Hi there! I'm not sure what cards are legal or which arent, have you considered Abundance as a ramper? Also, I find that you can build a deck which has a lower mana curve. Legendary creatures are not necessarily beefy, but provide loads of utility. In my opinion, you should aim for a specific strategy to win. So basically from your description I understand that you react to your opponents and play accordingly. How about having a strategy that will bring the game in your favour and make players have to react to you?

So basically, unless I am missing something crucial, I understand you have thrown in the legendary creatures and then the rampers to get them in. Try and make sense to them and get a solid and working strategy.

If you want a deck to have THE monsters, you might consider Mayael the Anima

Also, consider just simple filter cards such as Manamorphose that will let you draw a card for free or other cards like To Arms! that provide lots of utility and also let you draw.

Not an expert on the format, but looks fun and good! +1

CWSchub: You can't run Manamorphose in the deck - it has red in the colour identity.

As for legendary creature costing, generally the lower costed legendaries are too underwhelming when it comes to usability in the deck. The higher costed creatures like Avacyn, Angel of Hope and Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger/Kozilek, Butcher of Truth are great for winning games but you need ramp to play them efficiently.

Worldly Tutor and Horizon Canopy are great. Noxious Revival is ok, but it seems like it could be used. I like Lotus Cobra and sinvala, but i enjoy some good ramp.

+1 from me!

I'd recommend Dosan the Falling Leaf to deal with those annoying control decks.

Honor-Worn Shaku can be a really good mana ramp card if you have a bunch of low drop utility legendary's like Gaddock Teeg, Hokori, Dust Drinker, and Reki, the History of Kamigawa. You'd most likely not want to swing with these guys, so you might as well use them for mana.

January 22, 2016 9:36 a.m.

Also, if you don't mind losing some friends, you can run cards that will "cheat" your expensive legends into play.

Cards like Elvish Piper, Defense of the Heart, Natural Order, and Quicksilver Amulet are great for cheating in fatties.

I would also recommend Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger and Mirari's Wake to double your mana.

Herrschlafanzug: Pretty much all of the cards you suggested were in an earlier build of the deck, but were taken out for faster cards.

Dosan the Falling Leaf is worse than Dragonlord Dromoka as Dosan shuts down your instant speed removal.

The problem with a lot of the cheat cards is that if you focus on them over ramp, then if you lose access to them or don't draw them the whole deck stagnates. But if you put a good ramp package in the deck then you're not relying on less specific (and in this case not tutorable with your commander) cards that the deck needs to function.

I agree with enpc about the suggestions left here lately by some. But thanks for all your contributions! They are always welcome...

@ ceji3 : I will defenitely keep Worldly Tutor on my maybeboard, as Im not sure what to change it for. It is becoming harder and harder to swap it in, as the cards in the mainboard are there for a solid reason. Tough choices!

Horizon Canopy is surely going to end up in the mainboard. Now to find myself a copy :-)

I believe that Noxious Revival is pretty decent, but that it not worth swapping it in. As I have enough graveyard control as it seems.

Lotus Cobra seems like a solid choice, especially in this current build where lands could end up on the battlefield pretty often per turn. Any suggestions as what to replace it for?

Selvala, Explorer Returned is still giving me mixed feelings...

Cut Privileged Position for Lotus Cobra. More ramp is best! (get the promo one)

Done!

Found myself a NM cheap russian copy! It was too cheap ($4) to let it pass :-) What do you think of Selvala, Explorer Returned ?

The carddraw is nice with the added mana. I play mostly 1 vs. 1. So I am somewhat reluctant to let my opponent get free draws too. Especially since I have alot of counters facing me lately.

She's ok. I run her in my Saffi feck because it's cars advantage and ramp all in one but for you you can just play Sisay and tutor Kozilek, Butcher of Truth I dont think you need her.

PartyJ says... #12

What is your opinion about Kozilek, the Great Distortion power overall and in a deck like this enpc ?

The idea that you could add a counter option to a toolbox deck sounds crazy! But with the recursion options available, It also sounds like it could add another option to this deck of many options.... even with the other carddraw engines available you could even 'fake' the counter possibilities. Just by having a full hand :-) God, I hate blue for this!

January 23, 2016 4:52 p.m.

enpc says... #13

YOUR deck would benefit much more from running Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre over new Kozilek. You're an aggro deck and the removal and annihilator are much more potent. You don't want to drag the game out controlling things, you're not a combo deck.

And unless you have Sisay onboard, more often than not you'll actually struggle to have the right CMC card in hand to pitch.

January 23, 2016 6:34 p.m.

Seems legitimate

JANKYARD_DOG says... #15

enpc was that 'Sisay Onboard' pun intentional? Lol.

Regarding untap effects, what about Sword of the Paruns or Umbral Mantle?

January 23, 2016 6:56 p.m.

enpc says... #16

I'll take credit for it :P

Untap effects like Umbral Mantle work best in combo builds, but I'm not sure if beatdown needs it. Generally yup just tutor for one big thing a turn and that's enough. Now if you were going to add Viridian Joiner as well as umbral mantle, then that's a different story :P

PartyJ says... #17

Using Sisay twice a turn does give me a hot fuzzy feeling :p

Instill Energy is cheap , gives haste and doesn't use any mana

Today I made a new update based upon a streak of playtests. This is what I decided to change for the next part of testing:

Out:

Untaidake, the Cloud Keeper : feels too slow in this build. Coming into play tapped and too focussed on my commnader. Does not ramp towards the rest of the deck/ramp.

Mind's Eye : Feels too slow and I will never look for it when I had the chance.

Ring of Three Wishes : Even slower than Mind's Eye. It stalls my game; taking 2 turns to become active.

Swiftfoot Boots : I felt that I could drop one protection card. It felt I could miss the 'worst' one.

In:

Cavern of Souls : An easy change when I found a copy.

Path to Exile : I felt I was short on removal/boardcontrol in a few matchups. This was the best pick I could find

Worldly Tutor : I believe this 'card advantage' card gives me access to non-legendaries if I need them. More control over the resources I have at a faster pace than with Ring of Three Wishes.

Armageddon : A boardwipe which I feel suits the style of this deck. Lands in my graveyard could return and 'boost' Knight of the Reliquary. This pick is kinda tricky, but nevertheless interesting to try.

I am curious what you guys feel about these changes and if I might have missed something that would suit better.

You can check out my build if you looking for some more stuff to tutor Captain Sisay's Answers. I took out my sac outlet because my meta don't use infinite combos. But if you want it to be more competitive you can use these combos with your tooth and nail for a win con.I like to lock down with Hokori, Dust Drinker and Seedborn Muse

Control a player's turn as much as you like Mindslaver with Eternal Witness and Saffi Eriksdotter + sac outlet.

Melira, Sylvok Outcast with Woodfall Primus + sac outlet to destroy everything noncreature that you want to.

Rings of Brighthearth would give you multiple triggers with sisay along with any other thing that you have with an activated ability

You made the right choice cutting Untaidake, the Cloud Keeper. And Cavern of Souls is super powerful. Personally, I would have cut Eight-and-a-Half-Tails over Swiftfoot Boots personally as boots gives haste which is super powerful for Sisay and means you can play something like an Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger and attack that turn.

I'm no the fecne about Armageddon - while you can bring back your lands / tutro more ones more easily than other decks, you do have a very high top end. My girlfriend runs Terminus in her deck as a super powerful board wipe with the new tuck change rules as you can just put Sisay in the command zone now. And it means that you can retutor big creature much faster than your opponents.

Oh gosh. See, I got here from the Advertise Your Deck thread and you have to understand I do not have the budget that you have. The fact that your deck costs about a half years worth of rent for me is mind boggling and even better is you invested your money wisely. It seems like you have a really solid deck and I feel almost unworthy to make suggestions or say that there are flaws. So really in the end no matter what +1 from me brosef.

All that being said, in my meta there's this guy, not saying who, that runs a Doran, the Siege Tower EDH deck with Ajani, Caller of the Pride, Phyresis, Reaper of Sheoldred, Tangle Angler, you get the idea he hates fun. But whenever another player busts out Melira, Sylvok Outcast and Phyrexian Unlife all his infect goes down the drain and I laugh silently. So I guess unless your meta doesn't have any Infect/Poison Counter/Proliferators in it I wouldn't worry too much about it, but Melira, Sylvok Outcast is great protection as well, even without the enchantment. With it unless they can wipe the entire boardstate then you become VERY hard to take out.

Really solid, consider using Burgeoning now that I see that you have a nice land sub-theme.

enpc says... #23

I would recommend cutting Overwhelming Stampede and Vedalken Orrery for one more land and a Sakura-Tribe Elder.

Overwhelming Stampede feels really win more as you're only going to play it when you're ahead and it's not like you pump out lots of little tokens. And with the build, Vedalken Orrery feels too slow now.

Sakura-Tribe Elder provides ramp for Sisay, can be brought back by Sun Titan and can be pitched to Survival of the Fittest.

aznb01777 : Thanks for the interesting comment! Always appreciated :-)

I have the same thing in my meta; infinite combo's are not appreciated and take away the fun for most people I am playing against. So I avoid them as well.

I like the combo you presented with Seedborn Muse, but I'm not sure if I can fit it in using this build. A maybeboard suggestion for later :)

Rings of Brighthearth I once had on my maybeboard. But I have to figure out if it's something that will give me enough speed and advantage. The cards currently in this build are not so easy to replace. Maybeboard stuff for a next update :) Thanks!

FatherLiir : Thanks for your thoughts about this creation :)

This a project that is running for more than a year already. So most funds have been carefully planned and thank god not invested all at the same time, or I would go broke xD. I also have the 'luck' that I play this game since fourth edition hit the streets, so many older cards I still had in my possesion and were acquired when the were relatively cheap :-)

If infect really was a thing in my meta, then Melira, Sylvok Outcast surely has to be in my sideboard. But I have never seen a deck like that here yet. Thanks for the idea nevertheless, as I never know when they will surprise me with such a build. My answer is there now xD
