Standard Tourny Update —Sept. 2, 2012

Here's my Tourney update for 02 September 2012:

Round 1: Paired against a G/R aggro (Huntsmaster of the fells and company). I'm cursed in round 1's at this shop. Always lose. Always due to mana screw/flood/bad mana something. Great guy to play against. One of those who truly enjoys the game. He offered some suggestions, I brain worked. Now contemplating Sorin, Lord of Innistrads place.

Loss 0-1 (0-2 in games)

Star of the game: Nothing really hit the field on my end. So I'd have to say Gravecrawler.

Round 2: Paired against a B/R zombie variant. Game 1 he saw nothing but Dragonskull Summit. My zombies did their thing and I won the game. Game 2 similar situation. He led off with Dragonskull Summit. I gave him a Gravecrawler. He played a swamp and a blood artist. I gave him 2 damage, a Gravecrawler and a Diregraf Ghoul. He played another Blood Artist and had the game when he played a third and blocked with a couple. I cast Tragic Slip to get rid of one(I had 2 myself) and swung through next turn for lethal. Win Game 2.

Win 1-1 (2-2 in Games)

Star of the game: Tragic Slip.

Round 3: Paired against a sort of RDW style deck. Game 1 he starts off with Vexing Devil, I take the 4 and play a Swamp and Gravecrawler. He takes his turn to play something I don't remember. I recall getting hit with Chandra and a couple other burns. All in all I ended up winning on the back of Geralf's Messenger and Diregraf Ghoul. He made a silly play when he reverberated Lingering Souls. That was fun. Game 1 was mine. In game 2, he kept a hand with 0 land. I think he didn't really care about it that much, so it was just zombie shenanigans from the start.

Win 2-1 (4-2 in games)

Star of the Game: Reverberate on Lingering Souls

Round 4: I got paired with another person playing mono red. He played a very similar deck though played more critters, not as much burn. I really want to build it now though. Either way, game 1 I saw Vexing Devil and a dragon that was hitting for 2. Hellrider also came around to play but it wasn't enough. The game was close with lethal coming from either side when their turn came up. I had the turn, though so I swung for lethal into tapped critters and no mana. Game 1 was mine. Game 2 was better start for him as I mulliganed to 6 and still had a shady hand. No turn 1 drop. He took his turn, Stromkirk Noble coming out to play first. I drew into land with nothing but a Blood Artist in hand to cast T2. He got a couple damage in with Stromkirk Noble and I managed to draw Highborn Ghoul on T2 so I cast him. Stromkirk Noble got Murdered and I began to get my guys into play. Only a turn or so late. Play continued on both sides, I killed a Chandra by attacking it and worked on taking out my opponent. Around T6 or so I top decked a Mortarpod and swung for all but 1 of my opponents life and 4 mana open or so. He took some damage from the attack(bringing him to the 1) and I dropped Mortarpod and pinged for the win.

Win 3-1 (6-2) in games.

Star of the game: Mortarpod.

Overall a good showing and the second time I have Top 4'd a tourney at that shop with this deck.

Top 4 split the box and I took home 10 avacyn packs.

I would take out solemn simulacrum for three more lands because nothing costs over 4 mana anyway, so the ramp from him is useless. ALSO 20 lands is way too little for zombies. Just add 2 more plains and a swamp, trust me.

@Parasitian Interesting, I kinda wanted to use solemn simulacrum specifically for the fact that I had a couple copies of him and wanted to try him out. Though, looking at it, I like the idea of just replacing him with actual land. Appreciate the feedback, thank you.

Put in Birthing Pod , works wonders. Why not Killing Wave , it is usually a great finisher for the deck? This is my current zombie list, black white as well. The deck is a ton of fun and has beaten every deck I have ran it against (including some modern decks): Zambies, The Bungie Jumping Kind, I hope it provides some examples.

@DawnRayofLight: Birthing Pod isn't in here if only because I don't really enjoy the card, flavor wise. I did, however, toy around with the idea of using it. About Killing Wave I will likely start sideboarding 2 of them. I know how useful it can be/is, but I think that it is too situational to be given a place in the main deck. Speaking of sideboard, I gotta get some Doom Blade for the "I love Artifact" crowd...

I appreciate the feedback for sure and I'll definitely check out your deck for some ideas.

and by the way, would this work?

  1. Pod -> Messenger
  2. Messenger dies
  3. Messenger Undying triggers
  4. Slam down Restoration Angel
  5. Blink Messenger

That would be so awesome if it could. Great!

@Razor05: I don't see why that wouldn't work. Pod the messenger --> Undying --> Restoration Angel --> Pod --> Undying(because the exile drops the +1/+1 token if I'm not mistaken)

Also, thanks so much for the +1 :)

It does, which is why I run Birthing Pod in my zombie list, T3 Play messenger pod messenger, trigger blood artist, fetch angel, blink messenger 7 damage. Next turn swing, pod messenger, angel, blink, Killing Wave , game.

Yup, card:Geralf's Messenger is one of if not the BEST zombie in the environment at the moment. For BBB you get a mindless killing zombie machine.

I do that same thing DawnsRayofLight, except I use Mortarpod which gives me one damage extra when I burn off my Messenger.

I really like the idea of B/W Zombies. Plus only Fume Spitter , Mortarpod , and Go for the Throat are rotating.
