With my own Flavour of course...
I've been playing with this and U/b/w Delver along with Delver Blade and I've noticed that the B/W tokens is much more consistent. You can place in the top 1/3 with this deck but with Delver you can place from 1st to last.
Take that for what its worth!
Yet another different controller for the deck! The only loss it took was to me and I was playing my Angels and Humans deck.
Round 1 ?
2-1 against a newb player
Round 2 Angels/Humans Deck
0-2 Against me
Round 3 u/r/b Mill
Even though it gets different controllers its still puts up good results!
3rd Place FNM!
Lost in round 2 to the eventually champion... you guessed it, Kibler Pod! He changed his sideboard to include Ratchet Bombs and used them extremely effectively. Next standard tourney, I will sideboard in Stony Silence as a counter. Epic Battle continues and I'm not even the controller of the deck!
I lent my deck to a friend and he went 4-0, beating the mirror that still used Sorins, Kibler Pod, and a few other good decks along the way! This is the version I plan on sticking with for awhile as play testing had yielded positive results across the board as well.
We were discussing the deck before hand and he felt the need to bring in all control cards every Game 2. Take out what you don't feel doesn't work, (this time it was Hero of Bladehold and Tragic Slip)
Before the conversion he had gone 3-1 with the deck and 2-2. Based on the meta changes I made (Kibler Pod had won 3 FNM's in a row by the same controller and in the Final it was my B/W tokens vs the 3x Defending Champ Kibler Pod!
I told my bud if he didn't take down Kibler Pod no one could! He did not disappoint. LOL!
Played a 32 Player Standard Tourney today and placed in T9th by virtue of points and 12th overall. Lost the first two round due to absolutely brutal hands and playing again very skilled opponents who actually ended up in the top 8. (One finished in Second)
First 2 rounds I played 4 games and had to mull to 6 each time and should have mulled to 5 realistically, but with a tokens hand, mulling to 5 is an instant loss almost. Needless to say I went 0-2 those rounds. Pretty much everyone was running a Tier 1 deck which was pretty crazy.
Round 3 I faced up against Delver Spirits and because I have that deck as well I knew what to expect. Played it to best of my ability and did get the round 3 win 2-1.
From there my cards stabilized and I was able to take Round 4 and 5 for a 3-2 record! Definitely a fun night!
Looking at limited sample playing size (1 tourney and about 10-15 games playing with regulars of various decks) It became abundantly clear that the deck has merit. However, having only 4 cards in at the 1 drop needed to be addressed. I've decided to remedy this by adding 3 Doomed Travellers and evening it out with COPS at 3x as well. So I am now at 6 creatures at the one drop. I was running 2x Doom Blade, but at a very busy 2 CMC spot. By adding tragic slip I now have an answer to a Turn 1 Delver with a 1 mana cost spell. (Especially useful if I lose the roll or win Game 1 or miss 1 of my 6 one mana creatures)
I've kept 1x Evolving Wilds in case I ever need to fetch a Black Mana, but am considering replacing it with a Shimmering Grotto as I am minus 2 lands due to Evolving. (1 for the card plus 1 card taken out)
I made these changes because I noted a deficiency at Turn 1. I think this was an easy fix that not only does not harm the deck, but vastly improves it.
I also took away 1x Hero (2 remaining) and added 1x Grand Abolisher. This is the only play test I have in the deck right now, but his abilities are pretty amazing. He may make a future appearance in the side board. For now I'm seeing what he can do when he does pop up.
As for side boarding, almost every game 2 I am removing 2x Sorin for something in my sideboard. He's great Game 1 if I get him out, but there are things I would rather do if I miss my win condition from turns 4 to 6 then play a Sorin.
Played my first Standard Tourney on the 17th, went 3-1. Lost to a Rogue Elf Deck, 1-2 with no idea what to do against it. Beat a Delver, Red Deck Wins, and a Red Flare Deck.(not sure on that last one)
I learned that side boarding helps. A Faith's Shield with Fateful hour prevented 6 damage when my life counter was at 5. In return over the next two turns I was able to steal the game. However, it also occurred to me that to pull those kind of miracles is not common and that I have to use more playable cards. Tragic Slip has since replaced those cards. (Although they will always have a special place in my heart)
I have a lot to learn about the cards that currently exist in Standard, but for my first 3 weeks playing I've had a chance to learn and to have fun. Can't wait for next Saturday!
Added a 1x Mirran Crusader 1x Elite Inquisitor to main and same for the sideboard. Want to start experimenting with the 2 and 3 drop slot and see which one works. Will side one for the other in game two and three but right now really liking both cards in there. Too bad they aren't the same mana cost. Also will be experimenting with 4x Doomed Traveller and 4x Champion of the Parish and taking out -1 Crusader, -1 Inquisitor, and -2 Hero as I play test.
Got rid of the SoFaF and removed -1 Sorin as I was drawing more then one in multiple games (dead card). Loving the 2x Doom Blade but will start experimenting with the number of Oblivion Rings, Intangible virtue, and Honor of the Pure.
I know people are adding Swords and Pikes and Shrine's but I think that takes away from the synergy of this deck. There are tons of things that keep it running at full speed and are tough to counter. Learned very early not to over extend. Can easily over come Ratchet Bombs and board wipes multiple times.
Very expensive deck to make! Had to buy many pieces and do a lot of trades! Took about 7 days, 70 Packs, and about $400 to get everything needed. Still missing one Hero and one Honour of the Pure.
The search continues...
Thanks! It's something that I am highly considering. To be honest, its like you read my mind, I'm going to be playing some serious magic today (like 10 hours) and will be subbing that in and out as the day goes along.
How do you feel about Grand Abolisher in there as a two of. (Either to replace Mirran or Inquisitor) and adding Faith's Shield either to the MB or SB?
i would throw the sheild in side board for sure and for the abolisher, i would first play the first game to see how your opoinent plays and then if they are using a lot of instants on your turn or if they dont play zombies, werewolves or vampires, then trade out the abloishers for the inquisitors but other than that i say the deck is good as is, and may not even need the abolishers, if you want you can look at my black white version of this called deck:blackwhite-sorin
I recently found out that adding Doomed Traveler in aswell is very good, I see youve added in Elite inquisitor at most i would only SB the card unless your meta is just zombie/wolf/vampire decks. I have to mention though that the way Token decks win is having all those anthems out if i were you i would put those 2 honor of the pure back in, and maybe SB one out if need be.
I have put in those Doomed Travelers as of last night and taken out 1 sorin, 1 oblivion ring, and 2 increasing devotion. Im still trying to find a way to keep increasing devotion in the deck because it can give you a big turn around late game.
Like to see your trying to make your own variation though
d2r2b is right, but you dont need that many buffs, think of it like this, you swing 4 tokens with an intangible virtue on the field, so they are all 2/2 at least not including maybe one honor or a sorin emblem, and lets say 2 are spirits and 2 are humans so when they put up their blockers to get your humans out of the way so they take less damage, you activate your vault of the archangel, that way you gain at least 8 life back and you kill anything that is blocking your humans unless they are indestructible, so its a win no matter what because you deal more significant damage and take out their big creatures
I think a compromise is in place, I've brought in the Grand Abolisher as a 1x and bumped up the Honour 1x to 3x. With some more playing, eventually I will discover what works best. Thanks for the info and keep it coming!
I will report back with my thoughts as well.
oh and what happened to your mirran crusader, they are pretty good, especially in this kind of deck, just thin a 3/3 mirran which swings for 6 baasically, and has pro black/green which is what most decks are in standard, and good job moving the inquisitors to side board, that way if you play a vamp, were, zombie deck you can have a prefect sideboard
I played today at the Standard tourney at my LGS and went 3-1. I had it with 2x Elite Inquisitor and 2x Honour (different then what I just changed it to) I lost round 2 to a Rogue Elf deck. I'm new to most Standard Competitive and developing competitive decks so I knew absolutely nothing about this Rogue Elf deck. Won game 1 but he was able to get off his win conditions game 2 and 3. His tourney total was 1-3, but I did have tons of fun playing and that's all I'm really after at this point!
