Rnd 1

Jund

A fast hand let's me get board presence in game 1 which my opponent can not come back from. I thought seize my opponent (love to thought seize jund ha ha) in game 2 to find 5 lands. I discard a lingering souls to his lili on turn 3 and he keeps drawing lands.

Round 2

Affinity

First game I kept on a mutavault, temple, and a handful of 3 mana eldrazi. Didn't draw any colored mana over the first 6 draws. In games 2 and 3 my opponent had signal pest/memnite/ornithopter draws, which were quickly handled by collective brutality in both. Wasteland strangler comes in to cleanup and reality smasher finishes them off.

Mono white d&t

A very grindy matchup. I'll save you all the thrilling tale of lingering souls vs selfless spirit and mindcensor, but my eldrazi is what put me over the edge. The final game had 2 reality smasher holding off 2 Miran crusader while the spirits and snuggle copter put the beats on!

Rnd 4

Abzan combo

Ah, the new vizier combo. I taped out on turn 2 for a copter, which was a mistake. Dude casts the same collected company 4 times on turn 3. The next two games where much slower as I leave up mana for interaction. Gave him 1 turn on game two to resolve the combo but he didn't hit, game 3 he took some eldrazi beats.

I actually contemplated throwing something similar to this together. Game 1 I was able to use my spot removal to keep the deadliest threats off the table till the eldrazi started smashing. Game 2 I landed a worship out of the sideboard and was able to play with reckless abondon as the copter and souls flew on over to say hi.

To be honest, this was a fairly forgettable matchup. I kept some sketchy hands but so did my opponent. If I remember correctly, the early hand disruption paired with spot removal was enough to let the eldrazi feast away at my opponents life total!

Round 9 (finals)

Mono u tron

So I noticed that a lot of these bw decks where playing 3 fulminator and 3 surgical in the side. Due to budget concerns, I went with 2 mutavault (typically a 4 of) and subbed in 2 ghost quarters. I did not want to face tron, or control, so hopefully the additions come in handy. Game 1 my opponent floods, a thought seize takes him off of his mage (search for cmc 6 or greater). Easy win. Game 2 I flood out and ugin does about 16 damage to my face. Game 3 I have a hand of ghost quarter, fulminator, and thoyghtseize. My opponent battles it out but couldn't get anything going before early beats from copter and fulminator add up! Winner winner chicken dinner!

So, my 2nd modern tournament ends with a win. No where to go but up right? The deck felt solid, and I think I benefited from no one having a great sb plan against me. I often felt like I was playing with a jund deck with how much hand disruption I was playing, but access to reality smasher was often the game winner.

I wanted to slant better for tron, leading me to up the ghost quarters and put a crucible in the side. I figured I could attack valakut the same way. Overlapping sideboard strategies are always good.

I went up against the eventual tourney winner in Rnd 1. My inexperience playing against pack rat cost me a game as I forgot the tokens can make tokens. In combination with ensnaring bridge and blood moon,he made it a rough match. I flooded in one, but I learned a lot for the future!

Red deck wins

Ok, another blood moon deck. Let's see what we learned in the last round. A quick start let me take the advantage with my eldrazi. Game 2 I chipped in for some damage before he locked it down with ensnaring bridge. A top deck Disenchant let my spirits finish it off!

Rb prison

Prepare for tron, face blood moon decks the first 3 rounds. My opponent played very slow in a very uninteresting match.

Round 4

Gb bolas tron

What was once a bad matchup looks a lot better with our updates. Game 1 my opponent doesn't finish assembling tron before I bust in a reality smasher. Game 2 he starts to assemble tron but I had sand bagged some qhost quarters plus a fulminator mage which led to game over. He showed me his deck after and it was Gb tron with planar bridge and a couple of big hits. Spicy!

Round 5

Jeskai as foretold

A good buddy of mine had been testing this deck, so I knew I didn't want him to get rolling. Once as foretold is up, the value engine is hard to beat when they are casting free cryptic and ancestral without suspend. I win the dice roll and proceed to win the games I am on the play. Wasteland strangler placing a suspended ancestral in game 3 taking out a snap caster won basically won game 3.

Round 6: semifinals

Jeskai control

Perhaps one of my most disappointing matches. The first 2 games were close, with the player that ran out of gas first losing. I had a good position to win in game 3, with a board of 3 spirits and a Wasteland strangler against his 2 snaps and a colonnade. I was at 8 life and for some reason, I thought colonnade had 3 power. I swing out, not seeing a lightning bolt all game and die in the Crack back for not knowing a card and doing a sloppy attack. This one hurt, but live and learn!

Loss 1-2, record 3-2-1

Overall, 7th place out of 30 was not bad, however I feel like I could have done better. Thanks for reading and as always let me know if you have any input on the deck!

Explanation: I knew I didnt have a lot of storm hate in my binder, so spirit went into the sb for crucible, it had never really done what I want it to do in the tron match up. The freebooters and the scroungers are the spice that I had wanted to try. Freebooters are worse than sculler on the face, but are much easier on the manabase, have flying, and often eat a kill spell like sculler. Like old Jund, this deck often gets into top deck battles after and scrapheap may come in handy!

Round 1

Burn

We open up against burn on a hand not particularly well suited in the matchup, taking a lot of damage casting colored spells with my caves of kolios. I was low on life and made the decision that I play a Wasteland Strangler to put his rift bolt into his graveyard, targeting my own strangler. Eidolon of the Great Revel comes down and I can not get out. Game 2 I dont see any sideboard cards, but go T3/T4 thought-knot with my opponent drawing into lands. Game 3 I go T2 Kitesail, T3 Thought-knot, T4 Smasher T5 Wasteland strangler/Scrapheap. He spends all his burn clearing my board. I strangler his swiftspear (T5) and bring back the scrapheap on turn 6 and clock him

Round 2

Storm

Gah, I had hoped to dodge storm. Oh well. Game one he stormed off on turn 3 while I 2 Eldrazi Displacer out. Game two I T3 inquisition a grapeshot, T5 Reality Smasher to start a clock. As he starts to play out his goblin on his T5 I Fatal Push and lock it up with smasher beats. Game 3 was very close, with him grapeshotting me for 10, remanding his grapeshot then casting it again. ho hum

Round 3

Storm

Cool so everyone is playing storm. Scrapheap starts the beats and lingering souls helps out. I whittle him down until a top decked smasher takes him out. Game two, an early kitesail freebooter is not enough to start stop a turn 4 win by Empty the Warrens, my hand being fairly bad on a mulligan to 6. Game 3 I have some sideboard spice in Ratchet Bomb so im figuring a good keep. I inquitions to see my opponent has a hand of 2 empty, 1 grapeshot, pieces of the puzzle, serum visions, and 2 lands. I take visions. Scrapheap beats down and ends up sucking up a grapeshot and a bolt, and a past in flames to do it again. I cast thought-knot to grab an empty the warrens, and just keep beating down. Scrapheap was a great clock in game 3.

Round 4

Elves

Elves I usually feel pretty good about with all of our removal. Game 1 I am able to path his elf that taps 3 elves for 3 mana, and his elf lord that taps for elf # of mana. Thought-Knot on T3 reveals Canopy, Summoners, pact, Rites of Itlimoc, Elvish visionary, and one other card that I can not read in my hand writing lol. I grind through his elves forcing countless chumps, even holding off an attack with reality smasher into 5 power. Without smasher I knew he would be able to chump thought-knot and scrapheap forever. He has to pay for 2 pacts and tap his creatures, and I am able to swing in with the team 2 straight turns to end it. Game 2 is even grindier than game one, I can not keep his mana elves off the table and eventually just allow him to produce as much mana as he wants, looking more to keep his threats off the board. He goes wide and runs me our of answers. Game 3 starts with about 7 minutes left, and both start developing our boards and come to a board stall and run out of turns.

Round 5

RW Prison

I would consider this one of the more frustrating matches of the day. I fight through a slew of planeswalkers (Nahiri, Zen Gideon, and RW Ajani) and get to beating face. Opponent top decks an ensnaring bridge just in time to lock me out, literally the turn before lethal. Grrrrrrr. Game 2 I start with a 1 land hand and disenchant, and I cant get the creatures on the board to pressure his planeswalkers.

Grixis Burny delve?

My opponent starts on swiftspear, I kitesail to see a fairly typical burn hand. Sooounds good, that is a good matchup for us (70/30) preboard. Turn 3 my opponent fetches a watery grace. 4 color burn eh? Spicy. I keep playing as if its burn until a tasigur hits the battlefield, and 2 turns later a gurmag angler. I cant find the removal in time before the value from Tasigur over runs me. I dont have any notes for game 2, but I believe I got beat pretty soundly and was ready to bow out of the tournament. I found out my buddy who came with is still X-2, so we forge on!

No show

Sometimes its better to be lucky then good! My opponent did not show and I take the easy win. Had a nice chat with the gentleman playing next to me about the card Enduring Ideal. All in all a pretty good round and I'll take the free planeswalker points lol.

Round 8

Mono W Taxes

Ive duked this one out many times, so I feel confident that my creatures will be slightly bigger. Game one I lean heavily on an Eldrazi temple to get an early board state. My opponent had a Ghost quarter and Leonin arbiter on the field, but kept tapping out for the mana. Fine by me, I GQ his GQ and fatal push the resto. All that is left to block my thought knot and smashers is a flickerwisp and arbiter, GG. Game 2 is very grindy, with my opponent ghost quartering aggressively, Bravo. By the time I play my big creatures it is too late as flickerwisp and resto finish it off. Game 3 on the play is grindy as well, I think I play and flashback 3 copies of lingering souls which makes it difficult for my opponent. He widdles me down to 7 before I close the door with a wasteland strangler and swing out!

My buddy then drops to 5-3 (he was playing 5 color shadow) and we split. Had a great time, met some great people and was able to pick up a couple runed halo for my enduring ideal deck. To quote the famous philosopher Ice Cube, Today was a good day!
