Budget sans-white Valakut Ad Nauseam

Commander / EDH Budget Combo Competitive UBRG

NicolBolasMustDie

This is a budget, prototype version of cEDH TV’s 4 color Valakut deck. The plan is simple: ramp up to and tutor for ad naus, cast ad naus, draw most of the deck, play valakut as land for turn, play manabond, move to end step to drop all mountains with Vesuva and active Valakut, machine gun down everyone.

There are a few major differences here though. The smaller one is the lack of low cmc tutors, because those are expensive. Instead, we use a lot of cantrip effects like chromatic star, which both cantrip in order to dig for our tutors and mana fix, an important factor when considering that the mana base is also less consistent due to budget cuts. The bigger difference, though, is that the original deck plays a lot more mountains, while this deck plays just more than enough mountains to kill everyone from 40 if you don’t have any on the field before going off. If you wanted to, you could use a combination of Ludevic, faithless looting, noxious revival, and fault line to finish the game off, but we’ll go with sickening dreams for now. After drawing most of your deck, you should have a chrome mox, dark ritual, and chromatic sphere or a similar artifact. After drawing the deck, you can use the mox to cast dark ritual, then sol ring or mana vault, then the filtering artifact, then manabond with the resulting green mana, and then sickening dreams, pitching non-mountain lands and other spells you don’t need, lowering everyone to a point where your mountains should finish the job on end step. For the other plan, you need to have Ludevic out on the turn that you ad naus so you draw a card on your end step. Since manabond was errated to say “at the beginning of your end step” and Ludevic triggers and only checks for loss of life on resolution of the ability, you can stack the triggers so that manabond goes off before Ludevic draws you a card. Knowing this, we can cast looting before end step to pitch fault line and put it back on top with revival, and then draw it with Ludevic. Then, we use the untapped mountains we played with manabond to win the game, since the opponents will all be at a much lower life total than you.

The total cmc of the 99 is 55. Excluding ad naus, it’s 50. This is still higher than our starting life total, which is where Ikra becomes useful. If we can take an extra turn before we ad naus, we can play Ikra and then swing in to gain 7 life. If Ludevic can connect, we can gain 2 more, and any dorks we can spare can gain us extra life to buffer our life total even more.

This deck is all in on ad naus, unlike its inspiration.
