Budget League: Korlash, Titan of the Swamp

Modern* Budget Casual Control Midrange Mono-Black

My mono-black mid-range deck apart of my budget series. The idea of this deck is to use all of the removal cards to shut down any players early game. Then use the Swamp titans e.i. Korlash, Heir to Blackblade, Squelching Leeches and Lashwrithe to bust through a defenseless opponent.

Card Choices

Removal

  • Bile Blight: Some may argue that Grasp of Darkness is better, but what I like about bile is that it can take down token deck and Squadron Hawk really well.

  • Tragic Slip: Good for the x/1's that pop up here and there in most decks, but in this deck it's almost always a one drop -13/-13

  • Go for the Throat: This is a card I have been playing around with. It's a great hard removal but doesn't hit affinity(artifact creature deck) which is an issue and it's a little pricey. For a budget option for this slot run Doom Blade or Ultimate Price.

  • Victim of Night: One of the best removal spells in the mainboard. Looking mainly at tier 1 decks, there aren't a lot of cards that it can't remove and if not it can easy be swapped for Ultimate Price or Smother

  • Languish: Budget version of Damnation and like Grasp of Darkness, can hit most things it needs to.

Creatures

  • Gatekeeper of Malakir: This thing is pretty much a Geth's Verdict with a 2/2 body. If things are going good your opponent is not going to have many creatures turn 3 so nabbing one then having a 2/2 body to block or punch them with is quite nice.

  • Squelching Leeches: The first of the Swamp Titans. This guy if left alone can get really big mid to late game.

  • Lashwrithe: Remember everything you liked about Squelching Leeches? We just made it better! For one this guy can stay around a little longer and can be equipped to a Gatekeeper of Malakir lingering around or another one of the Titans to give them +2/+2 for every swamp instead!

  • Korlash, Heir to Blackblade: The last Titan and arguably the best. Remember the downside of Legendary's? Instead of having a dead card you can sack another Korlash in your hand to make your Titans even stronger. He even has Regenerate to boot!

Utility

  • Duress: Many in here to get rid of any problem cards that all the other removal can't so noncreatures pretty much.

  • Sign in Blood: Good for refilling your hand with removal spells.

  • Essence Harvest: An INSANE card in this deck in the late game. This card has clutched me so many games that I otherwise would have lost. I believe this is because the creatures in this deck can get really big with a Lashwrithe on them and that no one really expects it. And when it's not winning the game it makes for a pretty good stall card too.

Sideboard

  • Bile Blight: For when you need more blight (same reason they are in the main).

  • Geth's Verdict: Nothing is more satisfying then seeing your opponent's smug face after putting down a Thrun, the Last Troll and then seeing it disappear as you make them sacrifice it.

  • Hero's Downfall: I was having trouble with killing planeswalkers so I add this for some extra reach

  • Tormod's Crypt: The Dredge match up is not super good for this deck and I am hoping this will help fix that.

  • Vampire Nighthawk: The control match is a little less then I would like it to be so I run more creatures to speed this deck up a bit.

  • Dauthi Slayer: Same reason as Nighthawk

Some cards I'm considering are Smother to replace Go for the Throat so I can hit affinity, Quest for the Gravelord for some added value to killing creatures and Surgical Extraction or Extirpate to help with problem cards and for Dredge too.
