Maybeboard

Welcome to my Etali, Primal Storm deck!

I recently built an Etali deck based off of cards I had lying around the house and have slowly been upgrading it over time. The more I built on it I realized that a lot of the key cards in the deck were pretty cheap! So even though my current build is still budget friendly by many people's standards (<$200), I thought I'd challenge myself to create a version that was as cheap as possible. My goal is to eventually get it under $20, but I figured I'd start with a $40 cap.

This deck focuses on one thing and one thing only: playing your opponent's deck. In that fashion it functions similar to a Sen Triplets , Lazav, Dimir Mastermind , or Sakashima the Impostor deck, but it's not normally a playstyle you find in mono-red. With our commander and cards like Stolen Strategy , Mindclaw Shaman , Chaos Wand , Mob Rule , and Molten Primordial ; we use our opponents' win conditions against them.

To achieve this goal, we want to get Etali out on the battlefield swinging as soon as possible before our opponents are able to put up their defenses. Since Etali is a 6/6, it is entirely possible to knock a player out with commander damage but that isn't our goal with this deck. We want to get Etali out quickly so that our opponents don't have a chance to hold up mana for counterspells or removal.

To get Etali online as quick as we can, we need a lot of ramp and a lot of cards that can give haste. Even though we only need one effect to give Etali haste, we want to guarantee that Etali has haste at the soonest opportunity possible. Ideally we want to get Etali down and swinging by turn 3 or turn 4. In that sense, Otepec Huntmaster is the PERFECT card for this deck; reducing the casting cost and giving Etali haste all in the same card.

Of course in order to keep this deck budget there were some tough cuts that needed to be made. If you're looking for some cheaper upgrades that would make this deck function a lot smoother, I've included some really strong cards in the maybeboard.

Updates Add

Due to increasing card prices and desire to increase the overall card quality and consistency of the deck I have raised the budget from $40 to $50.

This was a hard choice but to easily keep the budget I would have to cut some of the best and most iconic cards from this strategy (namely stolen strategy and swiftfoot boots).

I feel like $50 is still a reasonable budget and unless cards rise in price dramatically, I dont see this budget ever increasing. Let me know what you think of the new budget and cuts/additions! It felt great to add in Chandra's Regulator / Tectonic Reformation and cut some of the less impactful ramp cards so I'm excited to see how this version turns out.
