what would you recommend for sideboarding objects against a planeswalker-heavy meta.

This seems like a very strong build, good job! I am wondering about Pack Rat , though. A lot of 8rack's power, from what I've seen, is due to the fact that it really doesn't need creatures to win the game, giving you virtual card advantage by deadening removal spells in your opponent's hand. Smallpox is also pretty rough on those guys. Personally, I would try cutting the 3 rats to add another Swamp or two and another removal spell, probably Dismember because they are so flexible.

Check out my build, Your Funeral, and let me know what you think!

For budget use Mire's Toll

September 5, 2014 2:15 p.m.

twospires says... #8

dsagent, Blackmail is better in virtually every case. With the highest cmc in the deck being 3, you rarely want to play more than 3 lands, and that can't happen until turn 3 at the soonest. Before then, Mire's Toll is strictly worse than Blackmail . Plus you have a pair of Dakmor Salvage that mess with Toll by not being swamps.

Thoughts on painful quandary and Liliana vess?

October 20, 2014 7:09 p.m.

twospires says... #10

BallinSalo those are too expensive. Since we're discarding our lands to Raven's Crime or saccing to Smallpox , we can't afford to curve out at 5.

BallinSalo says... #11

twospires ah thanks, that makes a lot of sense! Appreciated

BallinSalo says... #12

Also, could someone explain the use of the Dakmor Salvage ?

October 20, 2014 9:23 p.m.

twospires says... #13

BallinSalo, you can recur it after using it for Raven's Crime or Smallpox . It makes a nice soft lock with Raven's Crime where you can make them discard the card they draw every turn.

Nightstlkr says... #15

do you think the integration of Dig Through Time and Treasure Cruise will make 8rack a viable deck (budget or full build) doing all the discarding just lets them draw 3, which is harder to come back from then the other cantrips popular in modern that only cycle+small benefit like Serum Visions

Really thinking of buying this. Any thoughts on Mind Slash with Waste Not?

November 21, 2014 2:30 a.m.

Nightstlkr says... #17

Don't buy it till treasure cruise is banned. This deck can't beat it, even with lillianna and ensnaring bridges most games. Waste not isn't bad, mind slash is too situational.

November 21, 2014 1:26 p.m.

twospires says... #18

4 Smallpox and 20 land is, to say the least, risky. I've run a set in my version with 23 lands and it didn't work well. I would cut the Smallpox for 2 more Swamp and 2 Despise.

twospires the thing about Pack Rat is that it escalates quickly, especially if you have access to Mutavault(I know it isn't in the budget version). To take one example from the MTG salvation thread:

T1 land, discard

T2 land, rat

T3 land, make a rat (two rats on board), swing for 2 (2 damage total)

T4 make a rat (three rats on board), swing for 6 (8 damage total)

T5 make a rat (four rats on board), swing for 12 (20 damage total)

T6 make a rat (five rats on board), swing for 20 (40 damage total)

March 15, 2015 11:15 a.m.

twospires says... #23

aparthia, I have since playtested with Pack Rat and understand how powerful it is. Back in the day, no good 8rack decks had any creatures at all so we could negate any removal spells in our opponent's hand. Now we have good enough creatures that we can use them for a Plan B in case our Racks don't work.

Could you check mine out and see what you think- the sideboard isn't great- some creatures and some removal - and possibly 4 more discard cards to put in place of Victim of Night if I just need things to move along faster...I have done moderately well in Modern events and feel so close to making a break through with some big wins

I've proxied this deck and had some success and a lot of fun. Thanks for the list!

What's everyones opinion about putting a few Necrogen Spellbombs in it? Sure, it's two mana for one non-targeted discard, but it's at instant spead and could be brutal once the Necrogen Mists lock is in place and if nothing else it lets us cycle in the early game if we get flooded or can't find a rack.

Aspatagous says... #30

Couldn't you use Augur of Skulls and immediately sack it instead of using Wrench Mind because then it wouldn't allow your opponent to just discard one with an artifact. So i was just curious if there was any real reason against using it instead.

June 6, 2015 2:57 p.m.

Aspatagous says... #31

Id also like to point out that Augur of Skulls could prove quite useful in a situation where you have everything in place to win but they have a heavy hitter or what not on the battlefield. Because you can use him as a blocker and regenerate him instead of sacking for discard. I really just want to know if theres any argument against it replacing wrench mind in both the budget and full version.

After playing with this deck for awhile, I can say with confidence that Murderous Cut is a must have for removal. Waste Not is a good sideboard against slower decks, but usually it's just too slow.

July 20, 2015 1:10 p.m.

epenn21 says... #34

Aspatagous augur doesn't work as well because it isn't immediate. You have to wait a whole turn to do it on your upkeep. Because of that, your opponent can plan accordingly and keep two cards to discard.

This is a thought-provoking decklist. I'm a new player, and so far I like the game. However: scanning a few leading Modern decks I see that they all cost over $1000. How much success can this $30 deck expect to have against players who have spent hundreds or thousands?

Why do we have 3 creatures that literally die as they enter the field and do nothing? Yes im talking about Pack Rat

October 5, 2015 4:21 p.m.

ColFrogfoot

Pack rat doesn't die as it was enters. It says each rat, not each other rat, so it's automatically a 1/1.

Budget is a totally different category of magic. Magic was not made to cost thousands of dollars. I've seen people win major tournaments with decks under $200, MTG is really a thinking game, where you put your savings, and head together to make the best deck possible. Most working adults would be reluctant independent variable getting decks that cost thousands of dollars on a card game. This is why there is budget. A category for people who find good decks for lower prices, and these people, are definitely using their heads!

I'm thinking of building this deck. If I were to include ensnaring bridge what would you recommend replacing with it?

February 9, 2016 2:55 a.m.

Raz0r_ says... #46

Ensnaring Bridge is a good card. It is basically unreplaceable. It is hard to find cards of the sort that don't have a price similar to Ensnaring Bridge. Ensnaring bridge can basically stop your opponent's attacks, while you can Discard them into hell.

February 9, 2016 8:15 a.m.

Raz0r_ says... #47

Ensnaring Bridge is an unreplaceable card, if you're going for budget. It is hard to find similar cards at the price I suspect you're looking at.

Razor I'm referring to this particular deck list. What would you take out for Ensnaring Bridge?

I recommend taking out nothing.

February 10, 2016 11:19 a.m.

February 10, 2016 7:36 p.m.

stealthfox says... #52

So take nothing out? Then where does bridge go? Skip it?

February 10, 2016 10:22 p.m.

Raz0r_ says... #53

It depends. If you really want Ensnaring Bridge...

February 11, 2016 8:13 a.m.

ColFrogfoot says... #54

You can just take out pack rat for ensaring bridge

February 11, 2016 8:40 a.m.

stealthfox says... #55

So pack rat is used in bridges place? I was under the assumption that both are staples. Rat builds behind the bridge so they're less inclined to attack even if they manage to destroy bridge. Secondary wall/ win con kind of thing.

February 11, 2016 5:43 p.m.

Raz0r_ says... #56

Pack Rat is NOT USED in place for Bridge. But, If you're really thinking about Ensnaring Bridge so much, you might as well put a Zombie Infestation if, your hand will go down to 1 or zero cards in no time. In my opinion, Smallpox is an extremely overrated card in this deck, take out a few, (depending on preferences) for a black card a BALANCED EFFECT is unreal, that is how I feel. You might as well splash White JUST TO RUN Balance.

Also, you can have more than sixty cards in a deck, especially this deck, whose cards don't cost above 3 mana.

Adding the Zombie Infestation combo allows you to discard cards with benefits!

Maybe use One with Nothing to discard your hand,

would Hero's Downfall be good in this deck Instead of Doom Blade? I know it's 1 mana more, but it's much more versatile, being able to also destroy black creatures as well as planeswalkers.
