My favorite thing about the commander format ... the commanders! Well Brokkos, Apex of Forever is a commander that is always there, how nice. Brokkos cheats the commander tax most of the time and makes ANY creature you mutate with it deal commander damage. Sure, Brokkos isn't the most powerful commander in Sultai colors but it does offer a unique deckbuilding opportunity no other commander can offer.

I've seen a lot of folks filling their decks with unblockable and/or infect creatures. This may be a more competitive way to build Brokkos but I'm 100% positive it is also the best way to get taken out early at kitchen tables. So I opted for a more value approach with my build. Still a WIP but getting to play my favorite types of cards is so much fun.

Commander Matters

Since our commander makes a habit of sticking around it makes sense that we would run some of the cards where having your commander in play matters. Loyal Drake, Stormsurge Kraken, Deadly Rollick, Fierce Guardianship and Karn's Temporal Sundering are all better here because we will have Brokkos out almost all the time. I didn't use Thunderfoot Baloth, Yawgmoth's Vile Offering or the rest of the commander matters cards in these colors but you could make an argument for all of them.

Effective Mutate Targets

Value Targets: Draw cards, gain life, make copies - Cold-Eyed Selkie - Edric, Spymaster of Trest - Mist-Syndicate Naga - Stormsurge Kraken - Tomebound Lich - Ukkima, Stalking Shadow   Protective Targets: Keep Brokkos on the board with Hexproof, Regen and Indestructible - Wydwen, the Biting Gale - Troll Ascetic - Silhana Ledgewalker - Rhonas the Indomitable - Darksteel Myr - Chilling Apparition - Protean Hydra Removal Targets: Clear the board of nonsense - Cephalid Constable - Dirge Bat - Gemrazer - Polukranos, Unchained - Trygon Predator

Thats the gist of it for now. Play fun targets, Mutate Brokkos and swing for profit. Commander damage will probably be the primary wincon. As such I am considering more pump type cards like Cultivator of Blades or even as simple as Beastmaster Ascension. Anyone else building big ole Brokkos? If so I'd love to see lists!
