Braids Beat Down/Thievery

Commander / EDH

WhyNotZoidberg

So the thought process behind the deck...as Braids we obviously want to come out ahead in the race where everybody gets to plop creatures down for free on their turn so we want some big creature threats. We also need card draw, some control, removal, etc so I will try to break the cards down by what group they fall into primarily and will try to note when there is overlap (i.e., a card that fits into 2+ categories):

Fatties

  • Bane of Bala Ged (also removal)
  • Arcanis the Omnipotent (also for card draw)
  • Diluvian Primordial (steal their stuff)
  • It That Betrays (steal their stuff)
  • Old Kozilek (protection from mill, removal)
  • New Kozilek (card draw and control)
  • Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur (card advantage)
  • Lorthos (tempo, control)
  • Memnarch (also works as removal/steal their stuff)
  • Myr Battlesphere
  • Phyrexian Ingester (removal)
  • Sandstone Oracle (not huge at 4/4 but card draw)
  • Sphinx of Uthuun (card selection/advantage)
  • Old Ulamog (removal and protection from mill)
  • New Ulamog (removal)
  • Void Winnower (also control)
  • Wurmcoil Engine

Card Draw/Selection

  • Brainstorm
  • Consecrated Sphinx
  • Jace
  • Mystic Remora
  • Staff of Nin
  • Thassa
  • Intuition

Removal (both kill and bounce effects included)

  • AEtherspouts
  • All Is Dust
  • Curse of the Swine
  • Cyclonic Rift
  • Duplicant
  • Imprisoned in the Moon
  • Karn
  • Recurring Insight

Ramp

  • Caged Sun
  • Darksteel Ingot
  • Deadye Navigator/Palinchron (yes I know they can go infinite and I should probably include a combo for them, but I mainly just use them to hard-cast big threats I can't/don't put out with Braids)
  • Gilded Lotus
  • Lotus Bloom
  • Mana Crypt
  • Mana Vault
  • Sol Ring
  • Thought Vessel
  • Thran Dynamo

Control/Steal their stuff

  • Clever Impersonator
  • Control Magic
  • Corrupted Conscience
  • The Counterspells
  • Kira
  • Mind's Dilation
  • Phyrexian Metamorph
  • Treachery

Anything not mentioned above should be fairly self-explanatory. I include Crucible of Worlds not only to replay the fetches (misty, evolving, terramorphic) but also to get back Maze of Ith, Academy Ruins, Arcane Lighthouse which are popular strip mine/ghost quarters/etc targets. Coax from the Blind Eternities looks bad and I am still testing with it, but seems like good value to be able to pull Ula/Kozi/etc back from exile. As mentioned above as well, the deadeye/palinchron combo is in there but not fully exploited other than just being able to hard cast multiple Eldrazi)

So far I have played fewer than 10 games with the deck and am still making tweaks but seems like these are the main issues:

  1. Braids is a big target for removal and unless we start with Leyline or Orrery she very likely will die before the turn comes back to us. As a result, she gets off to a pretty slow start and once we are into mid-game she is easy to see coming so opponents can deal with whatever threat I want to cheat out.
  2. I probably need to add at least 1 combo wincon as right now the only way to win is via attacking and exploiting Annihilator and combined with the point above seems to make her pretty easy to deal with as an opponent

Metagame to consider is MtGO

Still making tweaks to this and would love to hear some ideas on how to make this more consistent and more competitive.

Cheers!
