MTG Deck Builder

Description

So it finally happened, the engine that this deck was...is gone.

It has evolved into a creature control deck, lots of removal, spell recursion and grindy battling until one of my planeswalkers can take over the game.

Comments and suggestions are welcome, I don't run many counters because they don't fit my playstyle very well. I'll be looking for a couple Master of Cruelties in the next few weeks to add for some endgame.

Snipe, Snipe, guttersnipe... — April 20, 2013

So...I've made a change that I think is going to be for the better. While Burning Vengeance has strong synergy with the Lich, this is at its heart a control deck. Control decks cast instants and sorceries. What sits in the same CMC slot as Burning Vengeance , has decent synergy with the Lich/Heartless Summoning combination and functions in a similar way?

Guttersnipe !!!

The only downside is cards cast from the graveyard can't burn creatures. Because you know...Grixis Control has a hard time dealing with creatures.

Ol' Yeller... — April 17, 2013

I'm contemplating taking this deck out back and shooting it...it's too slow...

I need some assistance again, I've borrowed some cards from KrazyCaleys deck list Bolas for a Better Tommorrow, and am attempting to reshape the deck a bit.

Metagaming — March 15, 2013

I feel like this deck will get it's ass handed to it by Thragtusk , Geist of Saint Traft and even Boros Reckoner . Help!

I am not completely set on any plan, but it was built to use Havengul Lich and Burning Vengeance together profitably. Heartless Summoning is supposed to make my other creatures more affordable for recursion purposes but like I say...I'm flexible. Just trying to get prepped for the release of Dragon's Maze

The Lich's Vengeance — Jan. 27, 2013

This card is too strong to not abuse. It's not quite as strong in standard since Perilous Myr is rotating, at least so far. But Vexing Devil and Snapcaster Mage seem like good creatures to recur.

I've also liked Burning Vengeance since it first came out. Since I want to throw things in the graveyard anyway, and there seems to be some pesky small guys out there in Ash Zealot and Dryad Militant I may as well have my creature control serve a dual purpose. Burn it is!

I just need a good burn spell, and some thoughts on what direction I should go. Also, what board wipers should I be looking at? Cyclonic Rift or Mizzium Mortars ?

I like your thinking on Rolling Temblor . One thing I've experienced is...and I have to give KrazyCaley credit for this one, since I borrowed it from Bolas for a Better Tomorrow. With all the removal in this deck Barter in Blood is a pretty effective board wipe. What would I take out in favor of Rolling Temblor ?

This isn't Arcane Melee combo, so unfortunately I'm gonna have to say that I think Mystic Retrieval is too slow for this format, so I would suggest to cut it. Another card that I think would do you justice for digs instead of the one Think Twice and the Faithless Looting s is Desperate Ravings : It digs and bins like looting, and at instant speed gaining card advantage like Think Twice . The other card I would attempt to fit in here is Pillar of Flame , because if you don't like stomping on aggro's curve starting on turn 1 now, you'll certainly want them once Voice of Resurgance pops up everywhere. You could cut down on your main deck counterspells and side them against slower decks if you want to make room.

I was running Pillar of Flame and, yes once Voice of Resurgence comes around I may begin running it again, but for now it stays out. I always found it wasn't as good as I needed it to be when I compare it to the utility of say Izzet Charm . Obviously there are counter examples, but its a meta-game choice.

I also just recently cut the Desperate Ravings from this list. I've found when I need something, Faithless Looting is usually better. It can help me dig first turn to get me closer to a Heartless Summoning or even just to toss a spell with flashback into the graveyard. Card quality is the name of the game. The sweet thing is, even late game if/when I'm short on cards it's still a burn spell to the head when I have Guttersnipe out. I'm flip-flopping on the Think Twice /Desperate Ravings argument though, I like digging one deeper with Desperate Ravings , so I think you may have convinced me to slot it back in.

I have to respectively disagree with you on Mystic Retrieval . Rebuying Dreadbore , Barter in Blood , Counterflux and Slaughter Games (out of the board) puts people away. This deck eats midrange, and Mystic Retrieval guarantees I have any answer I need, repeatedly. I could probably afford to go down to two though.

Well if Mystic Retrieval is working for you then don't let me stop you! Unless you have a lot of Boros Reckoner in your meta I think that Rolling Temblor will be a great fit for you.

A couple people are running Boros deck wins, but I'd definitely squeeze a few into the sideboard at least. Between Rolling Temblor and Barter in Blood I should be set up for aggro decks. They seem to give me the biggest headaches.

Thanks for the advice!

just a thought. wouldn't you want more creatures in the yard to synergize the lich + burning vengeance? 11 creatures is a bit low, I would actually be picking off their yards with the lich. I am contemplating about making a standard mill deck with the lich.

I'm seriously contemplating using Chromatic Lantern ...but I've said numerous times I don't like it in control since it does nothing on it's own but ramp and fix mana...I'm not sure. Although stealing someones bomb or utility creature could be nice. I stole someones Blood Artist repeatedly to bleed them and gain some life...good times.

11 creatures is low but the targets I do have are great for that purpose. Also, I've steered away from the Burning Vengeance plan a little...but it reduces the amount of removal I have available...

So many decisions...

My copy is in the mail, I believe it's going in my Robust Harvest version of this deck for Modern.

He's sick, and I might try to squeeze him in. This deck is more Lich-centred and if I can grind it through til he hits the board I usually win.
