This is a new brew for Oath of the Gatewatch. Instead of playing Atarka Red Aggro, we have gone for Red-Blue instead due to the quality of Stormchaser Mage, and the card draw power of Jori En, Ruin Diver.

The basic strategy is the same as any aggro deck; smash through as hard as we can. Ideally turn 1 would be a Monastery Swiftspear, followed by a turn 2 Stormchaser Mage. Turn 3 we pump our creatures, making sure to leave a mana open for Dispel. Turn 4 and 5 is when we start playing Jori En, Ruin Diver, and Abbot of Keral Keep to fuel our hand with cards.

So why play this over Atarka Red? Dispel, Stormchaser Mage, and Jori En, Ruin Diver. These cards allow us to potentially win slightly later into the game via evasion, card draw and protection.

Here are some of the key cards:

  • Monastery Swiftspear: The classic one drop for any red aggro. It's prowess trigger and haste allows us to deal a lot of damage quickly.

  • Stormchaser Mage: A fantastic new card from Oath of the Gatewatch. It's 3 toughness makes it harder to remove, flying helps get the damage through, and haste fits in perfectly.

  • Abbot of Keral Keep : Prowess, and card advantage.

  • Jori En, Ruin Diver: We play a few copies of this for the card draw. As we play a few more lands then Atarka Red, we can make use of this to increase our longevity past turn 5!

  • Zurgo Bellstriker: An alternative 1 drop which we can play if we don't draw Monastery Swiftspear, or for an extra bit of power if we draw later. Also easy to cast from exile if revealed with Abbot of Keral Keep .

Let's talk sideboard. We have 4 copies of Thunderbreak Regent if we need to go over the top of some smaller decks, or if we want to punish control for removing it. Also good to be subbed in if lot's of board wipe is coming. Negate is to counter those pesky sorceries that can bother us. Hordling Outburst allows us to go wide, and Rending Volley destroys a lot of creatures that are important. Finally the extra mountain can be subbed in if we want to go bigger with Thunderbreak Regent.
