There has been a question in my mind for quite a while: Which Mono White commander should I use? With the release of Masters 25, I have my answer. Darien, King of Kjeldor makes an appearance, with one the most exploitable abilities I've seen since The Gitrog Monster.

enter image description here

So what I mean by exploitable, is that Darien's text reads "Whenever you're dealt damage, you may create that many 1/1 white Soldier tokens." This means his ability turns damage into ETB (Enter the Battlefield) triggers. Once ETB triggers become life gain triggers then DAMAGE = LIFEGAIN. Need I say more?

The best commander combo since Gitrog and Dredge, comes Darien and Soul Sisters.

Foooooor example, lets say you have Darien out and you have just a single Healer of the Pride out. And say an opponent who does not see the combo out attacks you with a Malignus and you have full 40 life. In the end I gain 20 Soldiers and 20 life. Technically however, if you have say 40 life and someone hits you with 40 damage at once, say with an Aetherflux Reservoir, and you have the combo out, you will still lose the game, because your health will reach 0 before the tokens resolve.

The deck's main win condition, is to generate enough tokens and win the game with swarm attacks of tokens. Add some creature buffs like Dictate of Heliod for effect.

Oh by the way, Acorn Catapult is the meme card for the day.

So the logical thing for an enemy deck to do once this deck has it's combo out, is to not attack. However there are some decks that rely on damage that they can't necessarily control. If you are facing a Rakdos, Lord of Riots deck for instance like my own:

A Demon's Promise

Commander / EDH TurtleZoom

A deck that has to rely on cards like Festering Evil, Plague Spitter, which are cards that damage automatically, will naturally struggle against this deck. Even without the auto damage, there are plenty of pingers that deal damage to each opponent ie: Nettle Drone, which they need to use to get value out of their commander.

Another deck of mine that struggles against this one:

Grix and Stones, Draw Cards and Break Bones

Commander / EDH* TurtleZoom

The reason being the auto damage I described earlier. Just Nekusar being on the battlefield will give value to this deck. But Grix and Stones enables this deck's Mentor of the Meek. Just think about it. You get a token, pay a mana, draw a card, take a damage, get a token, pay a mana, draw a card, take a damage, you get the point.

So the ability to turn damage into ETB into lifegain using this commander can turn a popular combo card into infinite life/tokens: Blasting Station. That is right, infinite life using a Blasting Station. The combo is pretty easy, just have at least 2 life upon ETB (have out a Healer of the Pride of any two of Auriok Champion, Anointer Priest, Angelic Chorus, Soul Warden, Soul's Attendant), then blast yourself for 1 damage and 2 life per tap. This however can only generate infinite tokens if you have Anointed Procession out as well.
