Starting point for after Theros, very aggressive CoCo build that aims to pump the most consistent amount of damage possible under Blood Moon (in the form of Magus). OuaT, CoCo, and Seasoned Pyromancer churn flexibly through the deck, finding the aggro pieces that best line up against your opponent. For a deck with four 1 drops and four 2 drops, it plays out very mana efficient, thanks to flexible modes on Domri, Klothys, and Bonecrusher.
General Lines of Play:
- Ideally, you're curving 1,3,4. Simian hands are happy to go 1,3,3,4.
- Best T2 is usually Magus, Klothys, Seasoned Pyro or Spellbreaker (into open mana)
- Best T3 is probably CoCo (if you want to close the door ASAP, which you very often do, it's worthwhile to cast pre-combat)
- After T3, keep spending mana and putting power into play until your opponent is dead.
Special Notes
- Fetching a forest before you lock yourself under moon shouldn't be too hard. Lock yourself if you're confident you can win with red spells in hand, but never hope to draw into a basic forest.
- T1 birds, T2 Klothys, T3 CoCo is roughly 40% to turn on Klothys immediately, grabbing 2 three drops with 2 devotion pips each (decent assumption that you fetched once, additional Klothys don't count, you have one double pip 3 drop already in hand and haven't Once'd any of them to the bottom). Not reliable, but certainly strong.
- CoCo finds double 3 drops (not even counting simian spirit guide) 75+% of the time.
- CoCo, if you're not familiar with cards that tutor to the battlefield, does not give your opponent a window to respond between allowing CoCo to resolve and your creatures being on the battlefield. It's very strong with static effects, so we're loading up. CoCo into Magus, your opponent cannot respond by fetching, floating mana, or any other actions. CoCo into Spellbreaker on your turn, any spells they wanted to aim at your face (including those on the stack) have to wait until next turn. Ouphe, no tapping artifacts in response. Eidolon, hope they weren't at 2 life.
- T1 Birds, T2 Spellbreaker +1/+1, T3 Seasoned Pyro discarding phoenix lets you recur phoenix with your remaining mana and swing for 6 on T3, leaving 3 blockers back. My favorite "fair" opening.
- If you want to test play this list before Theros comes out, I'm running 2 Bogardan Dragonheart and 1 Scavenging Ooze in her slots. Dragonheart has nasty synergy with the list, and nobody plays perfectly into free sac outlets.
- Sideboard is still very fresh, but it's good to be prepared for burn/prowess in new formats and we definitely are. This deck probably folds to UW control variants, but against most other reasonable decks we have some sort of plan. May not be favored, but you have a plan.
