Mogis White-Boarder Cesspool

Commander / EDH

HerzogMacabre

This has been a pet project of mine that has been slowly collected. The deck has just recently reached a playable number of cards.

This is a deck entirely constructed from cards printed with a white-boarder old-frame (pre 8'th edition), which I have then modified to have a red-boarder. Most spectators have shown some anger at me permanently damaging cards, but each card in this deck (except for the fake Imperial Seal and Grim Tutor) has been collected specifically with the intent of this. I've looked high-and-low for the worst condition, most disgusting quality cards for me to modify :) A $3 Demonic Tutor with black ash stains and a white ruffed edges or a $17 yellow-boarder warped Badlands seems much prettier when "fixed-up" with a red boarder-job.

The issue with this deck is that these cards are all fairly old, or from core-sets before the times of Baneslayer Angel. Most of these cards come from a time where the spells were strong but creatures were garbage.

The idea behind this deck came from a few places, and originally started as a Nebuchadnezzar build since Telepathy and Glasses of Urza were accessible as white-boarder cards. While there is a large amount of draw and a fair number of control magic enchantments and counter spells, going Blue/Black didn't actually leave a fairly accessible win-condition.

After researching the available cards and realizing how unlikely it would be that I would invest in a Capture of Jingzhou and Underground Sea for a casual deck with this much of a restriction, I opted to change over to the next likely color combination; Black + Red! This gives us Blaze , Volcanic Geyser, and Disintegrate as possible finishers from a a semi-controllish creature.kill.deck.

This started with Kaervek, but has been piloted by Exava, Rakdos Blood Witch with a few combat spells (Aggravated Assault/Final Fortune/etc), Axelrod Gunnarson for the red-boarder match, to Olivia Voldaren, back to Kaervek the Merciless, tested a few other legendaries, and eventually settled with Mogis, God of Slaughter. He seems to be the best for the build, since he is a cast-and-forget damage effect. Mogis is far less impactful, but more resilient. Other legendaries were a more solid victory-condition with all of the burn support, but the deck has little recursion/ramp to support re-casting the commander multiple times.
