A highly competitive home brew infect deck that has seen GP play

A history of the deck

Back in later 2016 i saw the listing for a GP in Australia. We only get 2 a year, so i was pretty excited, and even better, it was modern. So i started planning out a deck to order so it would arrive before the GP. I had only just started my first full time job, so i wasn't exactly loaded with enough money to go crazy and buy any good modern deck. I had the cheap version of the mono green deck that i'm sure we've all seen at some time or another, blue red storm which had just lost probe, and amulet bloom, which was still reeling from the loss of summer bloom at the time as well. So i figured it would be cheaper to just upgrade the mono green infect. The issue however was that the blue green infect deck that was so popular had lost probe as well, and was way more expensive, so i figured why not make it cheaper. While i was looking at cards with infect i saw that there were a few great choices in black that still had evasion of sorts like the blue splash had. And so in the end this deck came to be as a way to cheapen but strengthen the normal archetype we all love to hate.

Deck overview

Playing black instead of blue loses us counters, but opens us to more board control, which is better in my opinion. Although all of that is in the sideboard, it leaves game 1 to a win in a normal match up, or a loss in a bad match up anyway, so then you can sideboard into the control for game 2 and 3 so you know what to do, and how to identify the weaker parts of the deck against the match up, and change it out. For example, a match against your standard lantern control deck rules out cards in the deck enirely

in this match up main phasing Might of Old Krosa becomes useless, so may as well swap it out for something better. And if it still doesn't work out you can side out more things like Rancor for more control stuff from black, which is what i like in a deck like this.

The overall inclusion of black in the sideboard also allows hand disruption against decks with counterspells through Inquisition of Kozilek, and Target creature removal with Fatal Push and Dismember

The mainboard is very different to most infect decks, and is always the most interchangeable thing when you build an infect deck. people always say why not run Vines of Vastwood over half the cards in my deck, and in the end i just say i rather these cards over other things. the use of only 1 drop buffs allows more to be played, which with the ones ive chosen, can lead to more damage output than a deck using 2 drop buffs. All instants as well leads to the opponent having to play around possible things, and even waste spells trying to remove your creatures, which can be protected with Blossoming Defense as a response to removal or burn.

Being in black gives a change of creatures too that others wont expect. Plague Stinger allows evasion through flying, which is as close as we can get to Blighted Agent in these colours. the other black creature that fits in is Flensermite, which is an odd infect card, however it has infect, is a low drop, and allows lifelink to come in handy if your'e forcibly taking hits from creatures with an evasion type, effect damage, or near storm death.

The deck can win on turn 2, however i find it frequently wins turn 3 more.

Turn 2 hand

  1. Forest
  2. Glistener Elf
  3. Mutagenic Growth
  4. Giant Growth
  5. Forest
  6. Giant Growth
  7. Mutagenic Growth

This hand is highly unlikely however, and so your'e more likely to turn 3 the opponent with infect damage while having up defenses to keep your creature alive for that extra turn.

Play experience

A frequent turn 3 winning deck. Only issues that iv'e had is either all land hand, or all buffs and no creatures. this though doesn't happen often since iv'e tuned the deck some more in preparation for the next GP. I have a lot of fond memories with this deck, so much so that i foiled out the entire deck. it plays well, and is one of my favourite archetypes besides my Amulet Titan alternative (Amulet Mind)

End note

this deck is as highly tuned as i like it. It plays the exact way that my playstyle fits it, and that's what makes it great to me. if you have any suggestions then ill likely listen to them, but im not sure about adding them, because the decks tuned the way i like it.

An up vote would be appreciated if you like the deck :)
