Hopefully people will stop thinking that mono-red is a handicap...

Total politics deck for the best politics commander, Diaochan, Artful Beauty.

A quick rundown of the deck..

Inherently, there are some obstacles that need to be overcome before constructing a successful mono-red deck in EDH.

For one, there's the card advantage problem, in this deck we have many ways to refill our hand and make sure everything is going swimmingly. See Mind's Eye, Staff of Nin, Skullclamp, etc.

Secondly, ramp is also nonexistent outside of artifacts so I have made sure to include plenty of those. See Sol Ring, Gauntlet of Power, etc.

Lastly, we're not using Purphoros so that's definitely a mistake /s

With that in mind, this deck runs in a 3-step process and like most red decks, it's pretty straightforward...

1. State your case.

Here's what going to happen when people see our commander, they're gonna say "Noooooooo! You're gonna kill my commander, I can't have that!" I've found there are three ways to respond to this:

  1. "Yup. My commander does stuff, who would have thought?" - say this when they're commander in any wy seems threatening. Kaalia? Needs to be dealt with. Atraxa? Way more threatening that Diaochan. Animar? Lol, is that even a question? Keep the focus off of you and have the table look at other threats around the table.
  2. "What? Her? Don't worry, she doesn't even have haste!" - say this if the person next to you is playing aggressive decks.
  3. "As if your commander doesn't have responses to threats." - say this if you're playing against anybody magic. Espeically a top tier commander, a spellslinger.

2. Play politics and sandbag.

It's really tempting, but never empty your hand. If you do, you will eventually run out of gas and feel bad for the remainder of the game while your opponents slowly take you out. Use your commander often and try to deal with threats politically.

3. Win through burn or really really big creatures.

Despite what some may say, burn is a totally viable way to win commander -- it's just not anyone's first choice. Cards like Pyrohemia, Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle and Vicious Shadows in the late game can usually kill an opponent or two. Alternatively, Insurrection and Colossus of Akros make great wincons on their own.
