Overview

So I'd been keen on running Baral, Chief of Compliance as a commander for a while, but hadn't really seen any at my LGS. Luckily for me I found one.

So I read the first word, 'Baral', and immediately knew who it was. I didn't even bother with the rest; I added him to the pile. I was impressed when I got him for so cheap and it took me a full 3 hours to realize it was because every other word was in German! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

TECHNICALLY he's a Man Magician when you translate it πŸ˜…

I found out when I went to read the flavour text after putting him in my folder, not even the rules text got me!

The Deck Plan

So basically I wanted to follow his game plan. Not the control, but spell reduction and low cmc. Initially I had a bit of everything with more counterspells in there to keep the ball rolling.

After 2 games with him at game night it was obvious that Cackling Counterpart with Salvager of Secrets was what won me the game.

I switched the deck to become more token themed, but really Cackling Counterpart with Archaeomancer, Mnemonic Wall or Salvager is how I build my board-state and get to a finish.

Quasiduplicate, Ghostly Flicker and Sakashima, the Imposter are also worth noting. (Though any good clone could replace Sakashima, the ability to return herself is nice)

Worth Considering

1.

Ghostly Flicker with Baral, another cost reducer (like transformed Curious Homunculus Β  or Naiad of Hidden Coves) and a return creature is an infinite combo.

Bouncing a land and your Salvager gives you infinite cast triggers you can take advantage of. I haven't leaned into it, but I am running Talrand, Sky Summoner, Murmuring Mystic and Metallurgic Summonings.

2.

My build doesn't function super well without the Salvager and the like, but there is enough to do work still. I've used Sakashima to copy another person's and go from there with flicker. Body Double and Mimic Vat are recent additions to help if Salvager gets removed.

3.

I try to play this more as a political teamwork deck rather than try and apply a heavy hand to the board. Tempt with Reflections has saved me more times than any counterspell by making a Salvager, asking an ally to get answers to the board along with myself.

Fold into Γ†ther can help accelerate your ally's board to match the scariest player's (while you get the Baral draw trigger) or to cheat a Deadeye Navigator into play on end step.

There are plenty of options once you establish the kinda game you're playing with the table.
