Bant Turbo Fog: Canadian Highlander

Highlander* Control

dinclaus

Maybeboard

This is a list I got from: https://deckstats.net/decks/39739/347321--canadian-highlander-bant-turb/en

I plan to eventually get into Canadian Highlander (as in, I'll slowly build this deck since most of the pieces are in my EDH decks). Even if this deck isn't a reality on paper, I plan to update this with cards from the upcoming sets.

As with other Turbo Fog decks, this particular list focuses on slowing down creature-heavy opponents up to the point that they deck themselves out. So this is done using the namesake Fog and other cards with similar effects to prevent damage from combat. In order to not run out of gas, the deck runs cards like Dictate of Kruphix to get more cards drawing you into these fog-effects. Something I've noticed about this list is that there are no boardwipes included. Maybe I'll look for the cost-efficient ones and place them in the Maybeboard.

As per the rules of Highlander, "Each deck may contain up to 10 points per 100 cards".

Enlightened Tutor - 2

Ancestral Recall - 5

The following strategies are provided from the link above.

Versus CONTROL decks, Silence effects can and must be used to drop one of the mill win-cons. With the draw engines, counters can be obtained to keep it protected on the board.

Versus STORM decks, Silence effects can work too. There are other cards like Angel's Grace and Flusterstorm to maintain a slight advantage during their combo turns.

Versus REANIMATOR decks, cards like Karakas and card:Gravedigger's Cage are key. And well, since this is creature-based, typical fogs can also be used.

Versus ELFBALL decks, it's a creature-based deck, so manoeuvring with fogs will slow them down.

Versus PATTERN RECTOR and SCAPESHIFT, there's Mindlock Orb and Angel's Grace.

  • Approach of the Second Sun - Instead of grinding out a mill as the wincon, maybe this can serve as the wincon of choice. Potential downsides are that it can be countered on two separate occasions and there's no redundancy / tutor so it has to be naturally drawn. With that same mindset, a win can come at any part of the game since it's not reliant on library-size.
  • As Foretold - If it stays on the board for the duration of the game, all fogs are essentially free and mana can be used for other investments. Though, at the moment, there aren't that many sinks to use this /saved/ mana on.
  • Commencement of Festivities - Just another fog. Not additional abilities stapled onto it though.
  • Commit / Memory - Commit can answer certain spells that may target our helpful enchantments while Memory can refresh our fogs. This can only be done using a different wincon since it totally undos the effort of the milling.
  • Gideon of the Trials - If we manage to keep Gideon on board, we essentially can not lose. But it's kind of redundant since the fogs do the same thing. It helps stopping their instant wincons though. It should also be noted that noncombat damage can still get through as they have to just remove Gideon first.
  • Oketra's Last Mercy - Personally, I like this card as I played with Resolute Archangel back in THS-KTK standard. The one-turn stasis on lands can be outdone if there's enough lands for multiple fogs during the opponent's turn.
  • Tamiyo, Field Researcher - The emblem is basically what sold me on this. Getting there is certainly doable with enough stalling. It's a shame though that the +1 ability can't be taken advantage of fully.
  • Trail of Evidence - The idea of getting a bunch of clues for every fog is good as it helps fetch more fog effects. It should be noted that with the mill strategy, it offsets the library difference in the opponent's favour. With a different wincon, it can help dig for it passively.
  • Turn Aside - It protects our enchantments / artifacts for a cheap cost. With its narrow effect, it'll just be a dud in-hand until it's use arrives.
  • Solemnity - This can serve as a way to stop certain actions of the opponent while supporting the next card.
  • Glacial Chasm - I like it in conjunction with Solemnity as it can serve as a soft-lock assuming both are in the battlefield at the same time. With protection against the removal of either piece, it can hold its own until you achieve the chosen wincon.
  • Sanguine Sacrament - An instant speed mana sink for life gain is pretty tempting to try out especially after bluffing a fog effect.
  • Settle the Wreckage - Wrath to Exile. Given that (from what I assume) rebuilding aggro decks post-wrath can be iffy, this can prove to be sort of beneficial. Also, there might be an instance wherein they won't even have enough basics to put out when you do pull the trigger.
  • Thaumatic Compass - I like DFCs I like the Ixalan Land DFCs. Maze of Ith on a DFC is pretty funky and I want to try it out.
