Esper Control

Standard*

Description

Gearing up for Aether Revolt,Land base is a work in progress, very open to any and all suggestions, as I have been out of Competitive Standard for almost a year.

UPDATE 1-24-17:Played a 47 man IQ 1k on 1-22-17 and I ended up 3-2-1. I Got my second loss in the last round, and a win would have gotten me top 8. I was not really ready for the G/B aggro deck. So I have made a few adjustments and I think this deck will do very well.

Why is Summary Dismissal in here? It was primarily a card to deal with Emrakul, the Promised End who is now banned... So I'm unsure as to why you still have that card...

Land base needs help. Only 4 sources of black mana and 8 black spells. I would also add 2 Liliana, the Last Hope into the deck for a combo with Yahenni's Expertise. It is a great control card and the ultimate makes it hard to lose. If you want an expensive counter I would suggest Confirm Suspicions over summary dismissal.

Zaueski, yeah I havn't updated the list since the banning, but that will be replaced for sure. Probably going to the side depending on the meta.

marcusacall yeah the mana base is stripped down as i'm not sure of a final list yet. So most of that is place holder and non-basics I know i am playing. I forgot about Liliana, the Last Hope actually defenatly like her here. As for the high cost counter i'll probably find something other than a counter spell as that was only there for Emrakul, the Promised End

I know people are going to be trying to play ulamog in the naya/temur shells for marvel still, I am still running summary in my sideboard. I typically like to stay at 26-27 lands in a control shell. I use to run lili in my 2 of gideon slot, but it feels good psuedo wiping them with Baral's Expertise and dropping Gideon right behind it. and sometimes if you have baral himself out, you even still have mana for counter magic from the bounces.

MrPibbo Yeah Summary Dismissal will be at least a 1 of in the side. I normally run 26 as well, but there is a big lack of mana sinks, and the Avg. CMC is low enough that I think 24 will be ok. That might change after some play testing. I am not a huge fan of Baral's Expertise especially at the 5cmc slot. I'd rather use Yahenni's Expertise and drop Liliana, the Last Hope for free.

My mind set is with baral a lot of the times i can drop expertise on turn 4 and drop gideon/dovin and loot for free while pseudo board wiping while forcing them to have an answer before im swinging in for 5 every turn or gaining straight card advantage. I love liliana i really do but from my experience she doesnt fit the control shell other than a sideboard option. She does nothing against GB Del and only kills selfless spirit in UW Flash and doenst have a place in the main against marvel. other than getting your gear hulks back i'd rather place gideon in that walker slot and increase my early game removal. I may run Yaheeni's simply for U/W Flash and the popularity of selfless spirit. But i honestly think its more of a sideboard option than main board. turns 1-5 we are really just looking to fatal push/grasp/control board state and if we can take a huge tempo swing with gideon you cause the rest of the game from there on out having your opp playing at your tempo.

also you have 10 cards at 5+ mana you're curve is super high for your current board state. Also, I am not fond of running more than 3-6 creatures in the main ever :P but im THAT kind of control player lol

MrPibbo I think Lili is much stronger than that. Especially is you play Yaheeni's wipe the board then just -2 her to get back your Baral. On top of that you can cast Yaheeni's leave them with an x/4 than kill that will lili. And not being in red we loose Radiant Flames which Yaheeni's replaces very well.

You are probably right on the lands though, I keep going back and forth between 8-10 creatures since this meta is so creature driven. There is a good chance of that changing though.

Im boarding fumigate vs tokens and upping my push count to 4 probably because it helps the early game making me less reliant on grasp on turn 2 and 3 allowing focus on double blue ot white. I decided to not even use disallow atm im sticking to the summarry dismissal/void shatter plan in the side. That may change though

MrPibbo Yeah I am Cutting a good bit of early board wipes. After some testing my local meta is actually creature light, so I am now just building more of a superfriends stall to win con type deck.

I love Esper control and I have a couple of variants I'd like to get your opinion on. Both are trying to make a bad thing work, so maybe I should give up on that but here goes.

This version is trying to be like the Esper Draw Go from modern with very similar cards picked out. Its win is either with an Ob Nix ult or by using Key to the City to madness From Under the Floorboards...with improvise if we are lucky http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/aer-esper-draw-go/

This version I'm trying to make Tezzy's Mom work out. I know its bad walker but I really want to kick some butt with it, simply because he isnt a Master of Metal, he is a mother (MoM). I'm trying to do that with tokens http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/go-buy-a-precon/ and with a draw go aspect http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/aer-esper-draw-go-v20/ I realy look forward to getting one of these, or yours, mathd out, I just really love Esper!

Oh, for some reason once you click on a link it adds "URL" to the end, if you delete that then it works out just fine. Any ways, sorry for the spam, lookforward to tweaking cards with you!

I'm not to big of a fan of Authority of the Consulate since you are not trying to swing past their blocker. It might as well just say gain one life when an enemy plays a creature. I dont think that is a worth while affect. I used to be high on this card until I realized it didnt make them miss a combat step, well unless they have haste.

numn2nutts Cool I'll look at your stuff when I can some time this weekend. As for Authority of the Consulate I am main decking it for:A. Life gain and let me have a few more turns to take control of the board. B. To stop the Felidar Guardian + Saheeli Rai Combo.

greensaleen oh good point about stopping the combo!
