Updates coming at you at supersonic speed now —Aug. 19, 2017

Got up to 60 Upvotes! Closing in on Shockwave115's Macho Man Madness for the #1 Brion spot!

Sun Titan: By popular demand! I cannot ignore the overwhelming support for this card. He can recur about a third of my deck and I think he'll do great here.

Nova Chaser: Nice 4:10 mana:power ratio. I can sack him with the champion ability on the stack or actually champion an elemental, of which I have a lot. Either way, lots of sacking!

Illusionist's Bracers: For the longest time I didn't know he worked at all with Brion. Now I know I can sack one creature and get double the damage=lifegain!

Burnished Hart: Ramp, plain and simple.

Armillary Sphere: Out for the Hart. Wasn't ramp. Not quite good enough.

Crumbling Colossus: Definitely my weakest creature. Many guys do it better.

False Prophet: I just didn't really like him.

Spirit Loop: The bracers are a good upgrade.

Gearing up to spend another $50 on Bad Luck Brion pretty soon here, so stay tuned for that! Keep the comments coming!

Rage Nimbus is definitely low priority but it's a great way to force your opponents to run their creatures into each other and leave themselves more open for you. There are probably just better options like Avatar of Slaughter. If you add more mana ramp in the form of some of my other suggestions and Gilded Lotus, Caged Sun, Gauntlet of Power, and Thran Dynamo you should have enough mana for Nim Deathmantle. Definitely you should have Neheb, the Eternal in the deck, and he would also contribute to making the Deathmantle amazing. If you are really tight for budget then yeah, stay away from the deathmantle for now. For Helm of Possession, the point is that Brion might get killed, or become too expensive to cast and you just have a bunch of Ball Lightning creatures that don't do anything so the Helm is another way to turn them into value by stealing other people's creatures. Armillary Sphere isn't actually ramp since it puts them in your hand; just play cards that put them into play instead and that you may be able to reuse, like Burnished Hart. I forgot to mention Sun Titan, but he should absolutely be in here, given that so many of your dudes that come in to smash and die are 3 CMC or less. Infiltration Lens is what I suggest to replace Staff of Nin. It works perfectly in your deck's plan and is super cheap. Combine it with Nemesis Mask for all the cards. For Sunforger you should generally be building the deck around it in the first place, or playing at least 10 targets and Mistveil Plains. Of all the cards I recommended, Lifeline is definitely the most important. I would say no to Sneak Attack and Kiki-Jiki, they're too expensive for the effects without saving you much in this deck. Dreadnought is interesting though.

I imagine Brion talking with a thick Irish accent for some reason.

YamishiTheWickedOne Brion has always reminded me of Dain Ironfoot from the Hobbit movie/book. Scottish accent, but still.

EternalBrewmaster thanks for allowing me the follow up! I picked up a few cards from my LGS yesterday, including Recruiter of the Guard, which was my favorite of your suggestions. Thank you! One last thing if I may: do you know of any other EDH masters who could help me out with this deck? I love getting opinions of people who have been playing the longest, thought you'd know a few. Thanks again for all your help!

The best people to ask are the ones who you see regularly at the top of the charts on the TO home page. I won't name drop them because it's not my place to offer up other people's time, but if you search them out and ask them, I'm sure some of them would respond. Best of luck.

So fair warning this is just the ramblings of a man whose never really played with or against Brion, but I wondered what you thought of Magewright's Stone and Thousand-Year Elixir. Also provided the copy remembers the sacced creatures power (it should but I don't know for sure) Illusionist's Bracers makes for twice the flinging fun. Also for more generic type suggestions Land Tax is always nice if you find yourself short, and (depending how you feel about tutors) Enlightened Tutor can always help find some answers or some umph.

EternalBrewmaster I know I've thanked you a thousand times but here's one more- Thank you! Hope to talk to you again!

jwe94 I like ramblings! I like suggestions from non-Brion players... you can get some really out-of-the-box suggestions.

The Stone and Elixir are nice, they just don't do enough for me. They only help Brion and Feldon of the Third Path and cost to much money wise. As for the Bracers-wait, that actually works? One sacrifice, double damage? Hell I'm putting it in right now! Land Tax and the tutor are great. On the list of possible upgrades if I ever decide to go crazy with this deck.

Nice deck :)

A few suggestions:

I agree with the previous poster about increasing land count to 36 (minimum) for consistency. Also agree that Sunforger can go. Your deck just isn't instant heavy (nor should it be since you are flinging creatures)

You may wanna consider Emeria Shepherd as another recursion engine.

I will add my voice to suggesting Nim Deathmantle, Molten Primordial, and Sun Titan

I would also consider a damage doubler like Dictate of the Twin Gods. Yes, it is risky but you are an aggro deck trying to burn people fast. Also, it can be flashed in on an opponent's end step to reduce its risk.

Do you want the tucking boardwipes? If you focus more on creature recursion you want creatures going to the grave. Blasphemous Act and Fumigate may be better options.

A few more suggestions/questions. What do you think of Flayer of the Hatebound? True it doesn't shine without lots of recursion but the whole fling, trigger, burn and fling again is cute. Also Deathrender and Scythe of the Wretched seem like good equipment for Brion and friends. Jar of Eyeballs could be a decent way to do a little digging, thoughts? Finally they've got quite the mana costs but Stalking Vengeance and Vicious Shadows are pretty intriguing.

I can see something like Bonehoard being really good here as you can sac for tons of damage and it only gets bigger as you do that, Moltensteel Dragon also fells like it has great potential in this deck especially if you played something like Neheb, the Eternal or any other mana combos (with a combo like this you could also use Steel Hellkite; or even Phyrexian Unlife if you are going for a final kill with it. Pyrohemia also feels like it could find a home here, as could Chandra, Torch of Defiance.

Other than that the deck looks solid and has a great idea behind it, if there is a more specific area you want feedback on let me know and I'm happy to help.

I'm currently on vacation away from my computer, but I can give you some general tips.

Ash Barrens is better than Evolving Wilds in nearly every single way.

Clifftop Retreat and Slayers' Stronghold are relatively inexpensive lands you can add.

I feel like Sun Titan is way too good to not use here. He recurs all of your little "one and done" guys, as well as your equipments and rocks if/when they get destroyed.

Maybe Dictate of the Twin Gods and Furnace of Rath? They're the definition of double-edged swords, but you can easily capitalize on the effects they give.

Check out edhrec.com for Brion Stoutarm. It's my site of choice. If you haven't housed the site yet, prepare to have your mind blown.

I was summoned? Looks pretty good with the update. It's coming along nicely. I'd give suggestions but they'd all be overbudget since I have a wildly different playstyle with my Brion (play Boros Pillowfort) but looks pretty swanky! much better then when I first saw it.

Hey friend. Thanks for thinking of me -- I'm happy to help!

It's a solid build. I don't have any groundbreaking revelations for you, because it's so good. Maybe, just maybe, damage doublers like Insult / Injury/Quest for Pure Flame/Dictate of the Twin Gods/Curse of Bloodletting could help you, as it's essentially a +X/+0 in a different form. Heartless Hidetsugu is definitely one-sided in this deck. Also, I'd think about cutting some of the one-use creatures you have like Ball Lightning in favor of things that grow over time. Falkenrath Marauders comes to mind as one example. Check out my deck @ Blood-Braided Beatdown (Primer) for a very similar concept in Jund colors to see what I mean.

Anyways, hope that helps! Excellent deck.

Overall, the deck looks good, especially on a budget! I'm a fan of RW as an EDH color combination - if you want to look over a deck in exchange, and also find some cards you might use, I'd appreciate if you'd look at my Judgment Day: Avacyn the Purifier EDH | *PRIMER* deck haha.

I feel like your deck could use a Gratuitous Violence. It would double the damage your hasty creatures deal, while also doubling the damage (and life gain) you reap from Brion throwing them. To spit it out earlier, you could run Academy Rector, and use Brion to sac her :)

I would highly recommend Test of Endurance over Felidar Sovereign: cheaper, and harder to remove.

Crumbling Colossus is your weakest high-power creature by quite a margin, and would be my first cut.

I'd also consider finding a slot to put Kor Cartographer back in: RW does not get much ramp, and she can fetch a Sacred Foundry if you decide to buy one.

You have Swords to Plowshares in here, but there's other removal you might want to be playing (Path to Exile, Oblation, Chaos Warp, etc). Also, add an Enlightened Tutor to your Sunforger Package; you'll thank me later haha.

Your ramp is...marginal at best, I'm afraid. I personally would try to play all of the 2-mana rocks you can, since they let you cast Brion on T3. That suggests Coldsteel Heart, Fellwar Stone, Fire Diamond, Marble Diamond, Iron Myr, Gold Myr, and Mind Stone (listed from best to worst). Normally I'd suggest Mana Crypt too, but it's worth half as much as your deck in total ;) I'd cut your 3-mana rocks wherever possible.

RW always lacks card draw. You literally only have 2 cards in this deck that can draw you cards, however. That is a PROBLEM. I'd recommend getting a Memory Jar, Wheel of Fortune, Reforge the Soul, and Wheel of Fate. Yes, I am aware of the cost of Wheel, but it's vital to your deck, and it's a good investment (price keeps going up, and it's good in every red deck). If you're feeling fancy, Scroll Rack+Land Tax is another super good combo ;)

Hope that's helpful! :)

I'll be honest, I think this deck is great. And really, I'd still consider it fairly budget. ~$100-150 is the cap for a budget deck in my opinion. Either way, I think this is a hilarious and powerful deck.

I don't have much to add, suggestion-wise, other than strongly recommending Illusionist's Bracers (which I know you are already considering).

Some other things you could consider, although not necessary, would be:

  • For early game redundancy, or in times where Brion Stoutarm is out of reach, you could throw Fling in here. It just adds a touch of redundancy when needed, or overkill when not needed.

  • If you get into situations where you have to sac multiple creatures and can only do one with Brion, you could add other sac outlets as well. Those could be Ashnod's Altar / Phyrexian Altar for additional mana or Goblin Bombardment to squeeze out a little more damage.

  • Sac outlets of any kind can pair well with Cauldron of Souls and a board wipe. Give everything persist, wipe the board, sac everything in response, bring them back and sac again. That could definitely be too much of a "build around", but I think that could be hilarious and salt on the wounds for your opponents.

I also agree with much of Daedalus19876 above comment, too. I know the Scroll Tax combo isn't the cheapest, but it is basically Ancestral Recall with more upside. Without breaking the bank completely, I will leave it at this! Haha. Again, nice deck, man!

Sweet deck, +!
It already looks very tuned, but I'd consider Enlightened Tutor. With nearly a quarter of your deck being artifacts/enchantments, this would serve you well.

Suns_Champion,
This looks really fun; big +1 from me!

With all the usual caveats (I have no idea what your meta is like, I've never actualy played your deck so I'm just theorycrafting here, etc), here are a few thoughts:

Draw well!

Welcome everyone! You are all a testament to the amazing community we have her on TappedOut. I called for help, you all answered. My cup overfloweth.

MegaMatt13 - Thanks for the comment! Yeah I think I will be putting more plains in. That will also help if I decide I want Emeria Shepherd as well. Nim Deathmantle is great but the mana ramp required just seems to expensive to for me atm, so I'm straying away from it for now. Molten Primordial may be a good finisher and yeah, Sun Titan is going in. I'm at least putting Gratuitous Violence in soon, not sure I like the double edged sword of the others. I stay away from them because of my brother's Zurgo Helmsmasher deck. And I like the tucking/exiling board wipes because of my friend's sliver deck. Thanks again!

jwe94 - Double dipping commenting ;) Thanks! I like Flayer of the Hatebound. The rest don't really seem worth it. Stalking Vengeance used to be in here but I found it's too slow/costs too much. Thanks again!

Oloro_Magic - Thanks for stopping by! Bonehoard looks neat and Moltensteel Dragon could be great as I'll usually have a lot of life. I'll try em out! the rest are either too expensive(looking at you, Chandra), or just don't seem like the best fit. Appreciate you commenting!

zandl - I like all those lands, I'll add them in eventually. Sun Titan is going in. Universal damage doublers are too risky with my brother's Zurgo Helmsmasher deck. Gratuitous Violence will find a place though. Thanks a lot!

TheHamster - Hi again! Just figured you'd like to see the progress! You were my first commenter hahaha! I'm pretty happy with what it's become. Thanks!

landofMordor - Thanks for the comment friend! I have Insult / Injury and will be adding Gratuitous Violence. The others are too risky. Heartless Hidetsugu may work... I'll think about him. I like the Ball Lightning cards too much. It's the main gimmick of the deck so I won't be giving them up haha! Checked out you deck; very nice! Thanks again for stopping by!

Daedalus19876 - Thanks for all the advice! I've actually already seen and upvoted your Judgement Day haha! Gratuitous Violence is going in. Felidar Sovereign will be leaving me soon so I won't add ToE for the same reason he's leaving. Crumbling Colossus will be cut soon-Iroas, God of Victory you think? I've kept Kor Cartographer in the sideboard for that very reason. He'll probably find his way back in. Yes I've been needing more removal and those are all good options. Enlightened Tutor may find a place even with Sunforger possibly being cut. I also think you're right about the 2 cost mana rocks... good advice. All those card draw options are amazing but very expensive. Will keep them in mind but for now I'll find cheaper alternatives. Thank you a thousand times my friend!

freakingShane - Thanks for the kind words friend! Yup, the Bracers are going in. All those other cards I'll consider as a package, may perhaps replace my Sunforger package with them. Thanks a ton!

Forkbeard - Thanks for the upvote! I will consider Enlightened Tutor! Definitely an upgrade for Open the Armory. Thanks again!

clayperce - Appreciate it man! I've never had an issue with Temple of the False God. Works fine for me. Taurean Mauler doesn't work because of my friend's Sliver Overlord, but Sunscorch Regent is nice. Also adds life gain! Other people's treason effects aren't an issue. Never have enough pre-combat mana for Rogue's Passage. I'll consider Chandra. Thanks a lot!

Again, just want to thank you all for the kind words and advice! I've got a lot to think about!

Changes look great.

I just found two cards that are on budget and worth a try, check out Debt of Loyalty, off color creature steal that no one will expect, and Dawn Charm is absolutely amazing versatility wrapped in a super budget friendly package almost an auto include for any white decks I have WHITE COUNTERSPELL!!!!!

August 13, 2017 5:16 a.m.

Fling in a deck, as a creature, in Magic in general, has always been a sweet spot for me. I love it.

Here are some seasoning suggestions to spice that baby up.

Ogre Battledriver - I'm aware Ball Lightning-type creatures don't need haste, but that +2 adds up quick.

Homura, Human Ascendant - Fling it, now everything is bigger and has evasion.

Ronin Warclub - Here you go Mr. Raging Elemental of Fiery Fury, have a club. Every time.

Grafted Wargear - Even better. Equipment without Equip costs feels like cheating.

Steelshaper's Gift - You're already running enough Equipment to justify it, plus these 2 I just mentioned.

Pandemonium - Risky, but better costed than Warstorm Surge.

Gift of Estates - Hitting those lands drops is very meaningful in colors that don't ramp.

Treasonous Ogre - Highly effective at fueling power plays. You're gaining tons of life anyway, right?

Gamble is on-point for the bad luck theme.

I see that Lifeline is already in your MaybeBoard. That effect is bonkers with sac-creatures.

All in all, a beautiful deck with power and personality. Bravo.

I actually saw someone mill a person with this deck using Altar of Dementia they had like ten 10/10 creatures that they couldn't attack with and they sacked all of their creatures to mill their opponent. A weird way to win but it was fun to watch. Just a suggestion that you might end up winning with

Deck looks good...I remembered making some suggestions on it before it before...I still think Emeria Shepherd could be pretty great. Cheers!

MoGoose831 thanks haha! I'll think about those. Kinda like Lapse of Certainty and Mana Tithe.

VesuvanDoppelbanger Thanks for stopping by, friend! Of all of those I like Grafted Wargear and Steelshaper's Gift the most, though I already have Open the Armory and I am considering Enlightened Tutor so I probably won't need the Gift. Gift of Estates is nice! Budget Land Tax almost. Will consider it but may just save up for Land Tax and Weathered Wayfarer. Gamble really is on theme hahaha it's on the list! I'll think about Treasonous Ogre. Thanks for all the suggestions!

Isaiah13 Thanks for the comment! Interesting card but not really what I'm trying to do here. Thanks anyway!

Rzepkanut Thanks for giving it a second look! Yeah I'm looking for cuts to make room for more recursion like her. Thanks again friend!

EternalBrewmaster I used your background formatting, hope you don't mind! gave you a shout-out in the description! Thanks!
